sTriper Since your stock is textured we might need to put a layer of duct tape over it. Don't want my guide to mark it as well as if it is too rough it can damage my guide. Not a big deal to cover it.
Since you would want to use it again we need to install removable blocks (probably in the barrel channel and rear of the action) front and rear to allow it to be mounted between centers. In a rifle I have a block I attach with a couple screws in the barrel channel. Is there a rear action screw? Might be able to come up through it. Either way there would be some wood left in each end of the channel to be removed by hand.

Safariman asked how close I could get to a M98 being a drop in. This is the pattern on the left the copy on the right. Where the pattern is off is the square corners such as the recoil lug. Also the cutter moved in an arc so perpendicular lines aren't perfect. Stocking a MKX action in the copy it is tight. The majority being the corners in the recoil lug.
Just my 2 cents.

Many of you have asked if I can cut a Savage 99. Do any of you have set of wood from a 99 hat I can borrow to make a pattern? cracked, too short I could work with most problems.
Just my 2 cents.

Many of you have asked if I can cut a Savage 99. Do any of you have set of wood from a 99 hat I can borrow to make a pattern? cracked, too short I could work with most problems. I'm no expert by a long shot, but I do hang out on the Savage Collectors Forum some and do have a few Savage 99s. It is my understanding that the Savage 99 stocks were "hand fitted" to the specific rifle and there are variances among individual rifles of the same model and vintage. There are probably a lot of us that would like replacement stocks for our 99s (especially the ones with tang cracks). My guess is that in order to build a drop-in replacement, you would need the original stocks for each rifle you are seeking to fit or the rifle itself. I could be wrong. The experts on the Savage Forum can set me straight, but that's my impression. With that said, I might be in the market for a set of 99 replacement stocks once you get the process sorted out. Good luck on your venture!! T.S.
