I killed this pig late Friday morning. It was moving at a brisk trot with a group of a couple dozen other animals when I shot it from about 40 yards. Only one shot was needed. The bullet went through both shoulders and lungs, resulting in a bang-flop-flip-flop. The rifle is a M67/89 Swedish Rolling Block, built by the Swedes under license from Remington. It's chambered for the 8x58mm Rimmed Danish cartridge. Bullet was a 170-grain cast flat-nose at about 1850 fps, about equivalent to a moderate 32 Special or 32-40.

The rifle may have been the oldest used for a pig this year. It was made in 1873 and the Swedes rebarreled it to 8x5 sometime after 1889. Did anyone use a Sharps or another oldie made before 1873?

The medal in the stock is interesting, and indicates the rifle was awarded as a prize in a 1942 Swedish shooting contest. Somehow it seemed appropriate for a 24hourcampfire adventure.

Load details for those who like to know such: Cases were fire-formed from Prvi Partisan 8x56 Rimmed Austro-Hungarian brass. These are a couple millimeters short of 8x58RD cases, but work fine. The bullet was the RCBS #32-170-FN gas-checked, cast from #2 Lyman alloy, heat-treated, sized to 0.324", and SBG lubed. The load was a healthy dose of Accurate 5744. (Evil Twin agreed with me that this powder is wonderful in such applications.) The shot at the pig produced a slight fracture at the neck of the case, so the case will be discarded. It had been reloaded 20 times.

Bob, cool story, and rifle! The oldest one here at the moment is from 1900.

I was surprised to learn that the .351 Winchester, and the 6.8mm SPC use the same shellholder. So I guess I will have that one running next year smile

Thanks Tex and Mac, I'll keep er down to just one very GOOD 1911, already know this pistol shoots my carry load to the sights, finished my hog with a shot slightly quartering to me.

Bullet broke jaw, went out the back of the skull and butcher found it in the second neck vertebrae. smile

I've been searching my ass off for the good doctor's 7x57.

I didn't discuss prices with the doc since he wasn't near ready to part ways from that beauty but I have specially set aside 350 bucks to quickly pick one up if it avails itself. Even told the M.D. I'd throw in a prenup. Ingrate!

I don't know if I can wait out sandcritter so if any of you find one, please let me know straight away. And don't buy it first expecting to make more money off of me.

Yeah, I know how you boys roll!

We had better hook up quick...I've been eyeing up the two Jeff made peach pies I am in possession of.

They started out in the garage...now have migrated to the bar.

No telling what happens next !!

Every time I saw Doc he had that rifle slung, even at the lodge for extended conversations.can't really blame him but if you write up a pre-nup for him, be sure that he retains possession of that 7x57!
Meanwhile I'll be on the lookout for one Bob,though it may cost as much add $375so keep saving!
If you would have accepted a little scratch from me for the rental car, the food, and all you guys did, you'd have enough by now! But Nooooooooooooyou have to be "crazy-generous"!!!
