I had posted this question in another Thread and it was suggested I start a new Thread. My question is: I would like to know the twist rate of the 99s I own. I have several 99EGs in .300Savage and .308 Winchester. Several 99Fs in the same calibers. I also have a 99F in .243 Winchester. Several 99Rs in .300 Savage and 250-3000. All the above rifles were manufactured in the 1950s. I have a 99G .300Savage made in 1937. I also have a number of 99Cs, 99CDs, 99DLs in .243 Win, .300 Savage, and .308 Win. Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I know this has been discussed in other threads and I searched this forum but couldn't find them. Thanks for the help.

Speer Reloading Manual # 10 lists the following twist rates for the Savage 99.
22-250 = 1 in 14
243 = 1 in 10
250 = 1 in 10 (of course we know they are referring to the post mils here)
300 Savage = 1 in 12
308 = 1 in 12
358 = 1 in 12
I don't know how accurate this information is.
The best way to find the twist rate for a given rifle is to measure it yourself.

As far as I know, the twist rates in this list from a book by Newton (compliments of Fug) are accurate for all 1895's and 1899's chambered in these cartridges. We also have the 250-3000 as a 1 in 14" twist from 1915 to 1959, then a 1 in 10" twist from 1960 onwards. Be nice to flesh this out with EVERYTHING that was ever chambered at the factory in a 99 and have Rick put the result as a sticky.

Thanks, Mike. From your data and what I find via some quick googling and looking into books, I get the numbers below. Can't find anything on the 7mm08. The 308 and 22-250 I find conflicting rate of twists for. Maybe 308 changed at some point?
Savage twist rates: ------------------------------------------------------- 303 Savage - all years - 1 in 10" twist 30-30 - all years - 1 in 10" twist 25-35 - all years - 1 in 8" twist 32-40 - all years - 1 in 16" twist 38-55 - all years - 1 in 18" twist 22 High Power - all years - 1 in 12" twist 250-3000 (250 Savage) - intro to 1959 - 1 in 14" twist 250-3000 (250 Savage) - 1960 onwards - 1 in 10" twist 300 Savage - all years - 1 in 12" twist 243 Win - all years - 1 in 10" twist 308 Win - all years - 1 in 12" twist (1 in 10"?) 358 Win - all years - 1 in 12" twist 284 Win - all years - 1 in 10" twist 7mm08 - all years - ??? 22-250 - all years - 1 in 12" twist (1 in 14"?) 375 Win - all years - 1 in 12" twist

Is that for their test barrel, or is that a Savage 99 barrel?

The manuals did stipulate Savage. My later manuals--after '50, do have the .300 as 1 in 12. Unfortunately, I do not have any reference for the '40s'.
