Another bit to add...

I moved here from Atlanta 6 years ago and in both cases I lived close to downtown. Personally, I don't think the cities are comparable.

People have mentioned Huntersville, Davidson, and Cornelius. Those are all great towns, but traffic headed north towards Lake Norman will be awful. BTW, the town of Davidson is in fact in Mecklenburg county. I graduated from Davidson College, love the area. Davidson is close to Iredell and Cabarrus counties though.

There are some good neighborhoods in Charlotte proper: Dilworth, Sedgefield, South End, Plaza Midwood, and so on.

The Light Rail runs from Downtown south to I-485. That's it.

My daughter's roommate is from Charlotte, and we visit her family on occasion.

Wanna go out to eat? Hour drive time each way.

Wanna take your kid to school? Hour drive time each way.

Wanna buy groceries? Hour drive time each way.

Gangs everywhere. Corrupt police ( roommate's dad is an attorney ).

Taxes through the roof.

Schools suck, and anyone with money sends their kids to private schools.

Inner city roads suck. Potholes that will swallow a SUV.

The airport is always under construction and egress is a nightmare. Always.

It is fast approaching the same third world status as Durham and Atlanta.

If you venture downtown, steel yourself for gangs, and the most aggressive and obnoxious panhandlers ever.




As stated earlier, you couldn't wrap me in logging chains and drag me to Charlotte.

I live on the east side 17 miles out and I can be in Lake Norman on the North side in 1 hour in rush hour Traffic . My son drives from the east side to the west side every morning to work during rush hour in about 45 min. Charlotte is No worse than any other Large city. I go anywhere I want in the daytime at night is a different story. I used to live in the High point Greensboro area and they had Gangs and Bums and Bad areas too.

Stay where the [bleep] you are. Nuff said. Need clarification? Read the thread about Raleigh NC and it sucks ass equally, if not more.

I live south of Charlotte at the SC border now. Stay away from I-77 and I-85 if possible..
There an opening for a mayor right now, last one was a crook...

Lots of negative, 2nd hand, and just plain wrong information in the post i quoted above and several others.

I will give you my perspective having been born and raised in atlanta and having lived in charlotte for the last 12 years. My office is "uptown" (what charlotte calls downtown) and i live six miles south in the southpark area

My job and family's livelihood requires me to live in a major city and i cant think of one i'd pick over charlotte. Sure, i'd far prefer to live out in the sticks somewhere but living in town enables me to make the income i desire and provide my kids with the education they deserve (private school)

As someone who flies roughly 100 segments per year and have seen most airports in the US, the charlotte airport is great. Very easy to navigate. Parking is a pain now due to construction to add more parking, but it is the only airport i can think of where i can park right next to the terminal for a resonable rate

Our property taxes are high relative to living in the country but not compared to other major cities. The income from my job more than offsets that trade off

I've got a ton of good restaurants within one mile of my house. Grocery too. Harris Teeter, Whole Foods and Fresh Market all within walking distance if you would rather not drive

The traffic in town can be bad (nothing like atlanta or LA) at the wrong times and the interstates get clogged during rush hour by the commuters that live in the suburbs and work in town. It can be annoying but relative to whatni have seen elsewhere it isn't too bad. I'd say the same about greenville/spartanburg area, which i drive thru often

And we live way back in a neighborhood on a double cul de sac that is great for the kids to play outside. Lots of other young families and kids in the same neighborhood and we simply dont worry about them running around outside

My commute to work is 15-20 minutes, including a stop at starbucks on the way in every morning

Our house/lot backs up to The local public elementary school. Lots of friends send their kids there and are very hsppy with it. We chose private school for our kids but i wouldn't have a problem sending them to public school if our circumstances changed and we could not afford private school tuition

Have never seen evidence of gangs and or corruption from the cops that do courtesy drive thrus of the neighborhood. The new mayor did get arrested today on corruption charges. The old mayor was great and is now governor

Downtown/uptown is far cleaner and nicer than any major city i have ever seen. The panhandlers got bad for a short period a couple of years ago, but that has stopped

The best analogy i can make to another major city - and i have lived in atlanta for 25 years - is to pull buckhead out of atlanta, and put it in north carolina, and you have charlotte. It is far from perfect but if you have to live in a major metro area, its a great alternative

Also, hunting and fishing is simply fantastic in the area. We can be at a lake cabin we bought in SC in 45 minutes and i can be at my hunting land in SC in under an hour. I choose SC as seasons are generally longer and sunday hunting is allowed on private land. The deer and turkey hunting is simply fantastic and i jumped a covey of quail on my hunting land last weekend

3 hours from Charleston, less than 3 hours from the mountains

Hard to complain about the total package

I second all the information listed above. Based on his description, I live about 4 miles away in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood.

The Charlotte airport is first rate. Yes, they are still building the hourly/daily deck, but you can fly almost anywhere direct.

The Buckhead ATL analogy is very good, except traffic here doesn't quite compare.

Have to agree with ShortMagFan and 2Bimmers. I live on the North Shore of Lake Norman in Iredell County. Great schools, too much growth in the 16 years I've been here but still a great place to live. Commutes on I-77 (25 miles to Charlotte/Trade Street ) during rush hours can run 45 mins to an hour. It's a great area and as stated - close to SC with long hunting seasons and liberal limits. Coastal areas of Wilmington, NC and Charlestown / Hilton Head, SC and Savannah GA all 4hrs or less. Can be in several different areas of the mountains in 2 hrs.

Yeah, but hey guys---it's still NORTH Carolina. Keep on driving another 20 minutes or so to the real Carolina.

I'm with you. I am a native georgian and a born and bred bulldog but SC is my favorite state in the union. I even spent a summer in missoula, mt (sorry to all the mt guys on this board)

Glen, do you need a partner to share in the cost of your camp? I've been searching the Whitmire area for over a year and can't find anything on the edge of the forest.

Ummmmm...I'll pull for the...ummmm....well maybe not.

I think if I absolutely had to move to Charlotte I'd look for a condo at the Charlotte House on Providence Road or a house if inclined. Safe place to live and grocery/hardware stores close by and you don't have to go downtown unless you want to. Park Road area is another good area...or use to be.

Time was when smaller surrounding towns like Davidson, Huntersville, Mooresville, etc, were not part of Mecklenburg County. Charlotte has swallowed up every town including Mint Hill, a great place to live back in the day. It's just too big anymore and not getting smaller. They're on a mission to be like Atlanta and NY from what I've seen. They've torn down old historical places downtown to erect condos for the rich and famous. Places like the Imperial and Carolina theater that I remember from my teenage and younger years while living there. Last time I was in downtown Charlotte a few years ago I had to get my sister to drive me as I got lost even though growing up there. Nothing looked the same. The places I remembered were gone...Kresses, Maison Michelle, National Shirt Shop, Charlotte Theater and many others. I was glad to see they didn't tear down the old Cotton Mills on Davidson and Brevard St.
