No, pure alcohol will not have sugar...but it will contain calories. Many drinks are not pure alcohol and have some sort of flavor/etc...and sugar may be part of that.

Alcohol has calories- but no nutritional value.

So i'm hypothesizing that this triggers an insulin response- but I'm not a Dr

He must have referring to this phenomenon.
