Does Hornady usually list higher max charges than other loading books.

Just took out a new 270 today with 150gr PT's. Hodgdon's site lits 55.7 grains as max. Noslers most recent edition list's 55grs.

To say the least I wasn't impressed with 2685fps and 55.7gr of H4831.

I'll happily go with Hornadys 56.4 the next time out.

Anyway just wondering if the Hornady manual publishes higher max's than other manuals..

I'm gonna try some H4350 and possible pick up some H1000.

Thanks

Shag, I went through exactly the same thing in my 24 inch barreled Zastava...

58.0g of H4831sc gets me 2850fps with both Interlocks and NBTs in 150g weights. 59g gets me 2900+. In testing I went to 60.5g which was very heavily compressed, accurate and giving me 3015fps with what for all appearances seemed to be mild pressures.

These days I've settled on 58g.

Zeeeeero pressure indicators and nice accuracy.

Shag another thing, I think you'll find the H1000 way too slow. Expect to max out around 2700fps at best. At least that's what I found.

Can you post your results?

Shag,

There are all sorts of reasons for one manual to list a different maximum than another, but one of the biggies is different bullets. Nosler Partitions tend to create higher pressures than most other bullets, for one.

But the list of reasons is apparently too long for most people to read or remember.

I shoot 58g of H4831 with a win primer, 150g, in my ruger, no problem.

110g tipped triple shocks with H4350 and R#17 rule the day in my rifle, with 3/8"-1/2" groups at 3400 fps, deer won't stop the bullet from any angle, to or fro.

I will. Anyone got a H4350 load receipe near max I can start with. All my manuals are obviuosly shy of a max load.

Thanks and everyone have a great M-weekend! Salmon fishing for the next two days and back to the mountains monday to shot!

Shag,

I was using 53+g of H4350 under a 150g SST for about 2880fps before settling on the H4831sc combo.

This too is well and truly over some modern manuals' loads.

A word of qualification re my loads. My rifle exhibits about 69.3g of water capacity in fired brass, so the chamber may be slightly over spec. Its also possible the bore might be above spec but that's not been confirmed. Never slugged it. These are just a couple of those variables to which Mule Deer alludes above.

FWIW, Nick Harvey who is an Aussie gun writer has published 9 editions of his own manual. His 270 Win loads with H4831 and 4350 are close to the loads I am listing above, with similar speeds. That guy is no dope.

Your dangerous waiting for a place to happen.

The manuals list starting loads and maximum for a reason, because it is unsafe to go beyond those loads with their combinations. You need to read the manuals and heed the warnings.

You have a serious problem with understanding safe reloading practices.

I've used 58 gr of H4831sc . Also had great success with RL22 but don't recall the load.

I've used 58 grains of H-4831 & 150 grain bullets.

Anyone have a 150 grain Partition load using R-22?

Appreciate the concern ME. In the 5-6 years I've been handloading I've always worked my way up to max or less. I'm not a speed demon. Reading back I can see why your concerned by my statement/s tho.

Thanks

Ross Syfried, a favorite writer of mine, often used 57 gr of H4831 under a 150 gr Partition. Tho' I don't use 150's much, I have trialed this load. It's a good one.
This also suggests that you could likely use bit more powder if you chose a Hornady or Sierra 150 gr bullet as they tend to be little easier on the pressure curve than a Partition.
As a general comment, unless a mistake gets through, maximum loads published in current manuals tend to be quite safe. I'm a little less anal about this than some others on the campfire.

Back in the day when the .270 Win. was my cartridge of choice I initially used 56 gr. of H4831 under a 160 gr. Dominion KlingKor bullet. Later I switched to 150 Nos. Ptns. over 56 or 57 of the same powder. Both worked well on moose and incidentally were being shot out of either Rem. M760 or Browning BAR rifles. Never had a problem.
