I just used my 10/22 while my son was small, shooting off the bench with close supervision. When he was ready to start hunting, about 10 and having passed his state hunter safety course with a score of 98%, I got him a Henry youth model lever action. It was easy to see at a glance if the hammer was cocked and it fit him well. He used the heck out of it, and has since graduated to other rifles, his favorite being a Rossi pump with iron sights. He says he likes the "retro" look. He also has a 10/22 of his own now, as well as an AR. He's 16. He's shot a lot of small game and one javelina with a CZ-527 in .223. Now he is ready for hogs, deer, etc with a larger caliber.
