OP 6MMWASP Campfire Tracker 6 Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 5,827 Montana	Would anyone care to make a suggestion on a tripod for my new Leupold 12-40X60. ALL I have right now is a small short tripod and am looking for a portable tripod for using the Leupold for coues deer, antelope and mule deer in mostly open country. It is fairly light, compact, stable, versatile, and won't break the bank. It also gives you a taller tripod compared to many "compact" models. I had it in my backpack the other day on a hike and it rode very well, as it should with its fairly low weight, and short storage length. I haven't played with it tons yet, but I'm very impressed.

Nice thing about a mid-full tripod is all the weight is held(low) in the legs when it's not fully extended. And in the rare chance you need it fully extended the option exists. Rock solid sitting or prone, I rarely glass standing for a very long period of time. Longer legs are also very handy if want to spread out and still be low. My Manfrotto and little ball-head weigh 3lb 8oz. Those Slik tripods look nice too. Appears to be different leg locks than Manfrotto.

All you gain with the Manfroto head is ease of use... yeah, that is a biggie, but the head does work and is very stable, as is... Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.

I'm not a Carbon Guy,as wind kills them...again obviously due to weight. A modest ballhead of repute,will reliably work wonders,especially as weight handling goes because a spotter is next to none. Their tripod socket is usually close to the balance point,which pads the equation nicely................. The center rod on mine doesn't have a hook so I use a 5mm cord w/ a prussik knot and carry a light nylon bag that I fill w/ dirt or rocks and attach to the cord w/ a carabiner.
