If you don't know how to take it apart, then what makes you think you can fix it?
The Mayans had it right. If youre going to predict the future, its best to aim far beyond your life expectancy, lest you wind up red-faced in a bunker overstocked with Spam and ammo.

You didn't say 'Bitte'....... I have a Miele canister but don't have a clue. There is a vacuum service center in Montgomery that can work on mine and I'll bet there's one near you.

Paul M, The manual will go a long way towards solving the puzzle. The links are greatly appreciated.

There probably is one in town. Vacuum belongs to an elderly neighbor on a fixed income. Thought I would take a swing at fixing it and save her some bucks. She thinks I am handy and I don't want to prove her wrong.

Fixed.
Top cowling attached with three screws. Two are exposed and one is hidden in a deep crevice obscured by the hinged vacuum attachment cover.
Electrical connection went titsup. Took 3 minute to fix after the cowling came off.
Still the hero in Mrs. Sprague's eyes.
Thanks to Paul_M.
