Thanks again for the kind words and congratulations. I'm passing on all your encouragement to the boy. He's pretty pumped that he provided food for the family.

That's awesome!!!
I get to take my seven year old for his first hunt November 1st. I am so excited about his hunt that I can't get ready to head west in a couple weeks.

Awesome! Did the same thing last year with my son and he took a nice 8 point with his 243. VERY cool feeling to do that and then have my dad and grandfather check everything out. 4 generations there was cool.
We hunted this year and hit the BASS tournament - saw one nice 8 point but he told me that he wants to wait a bit, see if something better presents itself with the bow. Was pretty proud of that decision. No velvet tho on that guy.

Well, the last of the steaks went into the freezer last night and the remainder of the meat is going into jars today. I just talked to a taxidermist about getting a mount done, since a boy only gets his first buck once-ouch! $450, neck or shoulder mount. Oh,well. I got momma's blessing on it, so it's a go.
Thanks again for all the kind words and congratulations, guys!

Congrats to Caleb n Scott! I love it when a young Michigan man makes that transition. Having went thru that nearly 50 years ago I still have memories...

I'm happy to report that there is a new successful hunter in the family. Caleb was feeling well enough to go out for a while in the morning, but finally had to head in to the house due to an upset stomach. He was feeling much better by the afternoon and we got settled in around 4 pm - just in time for some heavy rains to roll in. This is a special 2 day hunt for youths and is open to bucks or does. Caleb made it clear that he wanted to shooting a buck for his first deer and I had been seeing a buck with tall spikes and 1 short brow tine, so I had hopes the he might wander in close enough to be within easy range for Caleb. The buck showed and presented an easy 25 yard broadside shot. Here he is with my Ruger Compact .223 just moments after putting a 60 grain Partition through the shoulders of his first buck. Yep, another stunt shooter. The buck made a run of about 70 yards before piling up. Here's Caleb with his velvet covered 3 pointer. Except for the waiting, he handled the hunt very well. He actually spotted the deer first, was very patient about waiting for the perfect angle on the deer and placed his shot just about perfectly. He's very proud of his accomplishment and my wife and I couldn't be happier for him. We'll be steaking out the best bits and canning the rest this week. so cool Scott... congrats to the little guy and to dad as well... will be going out with Seafire Jr this coming Saturday... he's 20 now.....

Thanks, guys. The head and cape were dropped at the taxidermists' on Saturday.
Seafire-thanks again for the reduced load info using Unique powder. He shot up a bunch of those in practice for the real thing. That rifle has a pretty short barrel and the reduced blast made shooting a pleasure.

My pleasure Scott! Glad the little guy enjoyed it, and it worked for him...
The results he got prove, those reduced loads work getting kids and new shooters use to a firearm....
as has always been said, once someone has a deer in their sights, no one ever notices recoil then...

The cost of the mount is well worth the price. I mounted my daughter's first youth kill.
The mount now sits predominantly in the living room of her first house. Everytime I see it I am reminded of the 14 y/o girl that grew into the beautiful, successful woman that she is today.
