In 1998 on a fly-in moose hunt in the Yukon I found a can of Brunswick brand mustard sardines at the edge of the lake in about 2' of water. Turns out a grizzly bear had ransacked the outfitters camp dragging everything out and chomping on anything and everything incl all cans. The mess was everywhere when we arrived strewn all around the camp and in the lake. This one can was spared and ended up being my lunch. Ironically, this can of sardines was produced only a few miles down the road from my home here and found it's way into the interior of the Yukon.

Sardines...hell no.
Pickled herring...hell yes! Why not both? Smoked herring is very good as well, esp for breakfast with eggs, baked beans and toast.

Some folks like them, others don't. I really love them, and often make a lunch out of a can of sardines, some crackers and beer. Today, it was Trader Joe's Wild caught sardines, packed in Harissa. Those are probably the best sardines I have ever had. Washed them down with an ice cold Yuengling. Heaven! You are very lucky to have access to Yuengling. The bastages wont see to it that we can enjoy it here in Arizona!!!! Best beer around. But we have sardines and crackers so life is still pretty good. Take care, Willie

keep in mind "sardines" in the culinary sense arent a species of fish, they are a number of species of fish of similar size.....as far as a description its a size rating more than anything....sardine=any small oily saltwater fish that fits in a can whole for the most part......so different brands using different species and different preps can HEAVILY influence flavor gee Rattler, I never knew that. lol

I used to gag when I used 'em for coon bait. Can't stand to smell the things... What? You're not a connoisseur of sewer trout?? L.W.

I'd be reluctant to hunt with anyone that didn't have a good supply of Sardines, Smoked Oysters, and Kipper Snacks in their camp box.
Best Sardines I ever had were at a little place on the beach in Puertecitos in Baha. Not sure what kind of fish they were but the owner (Speedy) made em fresh every morning. No electricity within a hundred miles but he kept his beer (Tecate) in an old refrigerator and refused to serve you one before it had been in there for a while. He was a cool old dude though,,, retired from the Mexican Navy, and looked EXACTLY like Red Fox.
Warm Tecate and fresh sardines,,,, best breakfast I ever had. Canned smoked oysters!!! Surely food of the Gods!!! Drink the juice off those cans too!

Sardines always take me back to the movie 'The Burbs' with Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher. They were sitting in their weird new neighbors living room and this freaky red headed kid came in with a can of sardines offering them to them as a snack. He'd stick the can under their noses and say 'Sahr deen?'. It was hilarious. Takes me back to Cannery Row. I wish I were alive to have attended the party on Fisherman's Wharf with all of the Italians at the close of sardine season. I bet that was quite a shindig. Now the Row is a tourist attraction, but we still have one local canner left, so periodically I try to support them though not the cheapest around. Monterey Bay Sardines

I love sardines. The small double layer King Oscar brand are my favorite. Same here. Speaking of which, I'm running a little low on them, I only have two or three cans in the cupboard. Ed

Barkoff,
I sure wish I had known about them when I was in Monterey a couple weeks ago. I would have gotten some for my dad.
Good information to know now though.
