My buddy John and I set out to fill his blacktail tag today, his last day to hunt. Morning hunt was a bust, but afternoon hunt paid off big. 99R 300 Savage, Barnes 130 ttsx. Spotted this buck at 1/2 mile, sized him up, then John made a great stalk to within 75 yards while I watched and guided him in from 1/2 mile away. Took quite a while, had no gear with us, so it was a mile drag back to the rig. Just finished the skinning and cleanup, 11:15 pm, off to bed. Thought you guys would like this one. Sorry for the crappy cell phone photos, like I said, we had no gear with us. Turned out to be a 5x7, but a young deer. Really nice young buck. A great way to spend the day with a friend. Long way to drag him out, lots of work. I'm sure you guys slept well. Also those 99's in 300 Savage do the job well.

Roy Wow That is a Pig of a Black Tail. Never knew they got so big. Most of what i seen were smaller, way smaller.
Congrats to you and your friend.
Makes me still dream of one day hopefully to hunt a Black Tail.
Thank-you for Sharing. Steve

The rest of the Savage story- John hunts with an uncheckered EG 300 that was his grandfathers, and has killed many blacktails with it. It is as gray a rat with a split forearm as you will ever find, but of course, continues to work like Savages do. He mentioned wanting another 99 so...
I found him that R last year, and this is the first big game hunt he'd made with it. He had never taken a big blacktail, always settling for any legal buck for the meat for his family.
This is the same friend we got a bear this spring, an 18 year old boar and another epic hunt.
John's a die hard Savage lover and as true a friend as a man could ask for. I'm very blessed to have been part of both of these great hunts he made this year. I believe that this was a bit of a turning point for both of us in our hunting.

Congrats to your friend...that is a very nice buck. As always, I enjoy a story of a 99 and the results thereof.

very nice plab He could have shot it at 900 yards and saved the stalk if he'd been shooting a whizbang instead of a dadgum 300 Salvage!!! !
