I have a 99 in 300sav i am using for deer. Black bear season follows deer season for a couple weeks in Dec. What loads/bullets would you recommend for Virginia black bear, most go 250-300, occasionally much bigger. I have some Hornady 180 RN, but don't know if I can get enough juice behind it to be effective.

My exp. with the .300 sav. is limited to factory loads.. but when I was a kid, even a young man, the .300 was common and used for deer, black bear, and elk.. If your loads are approaching factory ammo, I would think you would be fine..

Sold my last 99 in .300 Sav. Kind of regret it at times.. Wonderful old round..

Get those 180's up to about 2400 fps, keep the range moderate, and go to it.

You know what I'm going to suggest. A 130gr TTSX at 2900-3000fps

Hit 'em in the pump house and it doesn't really matter what 300 you use. smile

Curious, "Virginia" bears, what type of country, typical range, hunting style (dog, bait, etc.)

At woods distances, don't think there'd be a problem with any factory 180's or 180's loaded close to that.

I'm a Partition guy. 150gr or 165gr Partition is almost always my choice.

Back in the 1940s, the .300 Savage with 180-grain bullets was thought to be adequate for grizzly bears in Alaska. I doubt you'll need more for a blackie.

I killed my first bear with a 35 Whelen and switched to a 300 Savage. I have killed 3 bears with the 300 using 180 Core Lokts. My wife also shoots a 300 and has killed 3 bears using the Core Lokts also. The 300 is a bear killing machine, I have never had one go farther than 30 yards after the shot.

Everybody knows 180 grain bullets out of a 300 Savage will just bounce off a black bear.

I'd recommend a super nitro express belted magnum. That should take care of just about any black bear you run into. wink

I like 165gr sierra's on top of 40gr of IMR4064
this is a nice killer IMO.
the 300sav is very under estimated nowdays
because of all the hype around magnums
I'm in maine and they kill lots of bears here with 30-30's
and the 35rem the 300 has more power
if your not a handloader factory 150 or 180 will do a fine job
post some pics when you drop one

good luck

All kidding aside: Well stated by Plab.

Your 300 Savage will do essentially anything a 308 Win can do under field conditions and I don't think there is anybody that wouldn't consider the 308 Win an excellent black bear gun.

I am hearing 165gr bullets a lot here. Any bullet brand/type. I like core lokts but they are drying up for us reloaders.

Cheaper to buy Partition 2nds and load them than to buy factory cup and core ammo, and they work. 165's not in stock today, but 150's are.

http://www.shootersproshop.com/nosl...0-150gr-partition-spitzer-blem-50ct.html

If interested Only in 165's, I may have a pack of 50 I could part with for cost. PM me if interested and I'll go dig.

That's because changes scare the crap out of these guys. If they approached vehicles like the do bullets they'd still be driving Edsels....

But yes, I'd ALWAY pick a Nosler Partition 150/165 over a Core-loss anything.

It can vary from steep ridgelines and laurel thickets, to rolling hills and open oak/pine forests to coastal plain bean fields and swamps, and all of those areas with or without dogs, depending upon the season and the unit. No baiting permitted.

The .300 Savage will be JUST fine for any of those areas, hunts, or bears.

Steelhead.....I just put the 130 grain at 2950 fps with a BC of .34 through a ballistic calculator. I compared a 165 grain boattail (SGK) with a BC of .409 at 2300 fps.

The 130 grain was 20 inches higher at 500 yards or so.....I better get me some. Thanks!

Not that I'm arguing against the 130, but get that 165 up to 2550 or so to better check out its capabilities.

I hate agreeing with steelhead. Makes me cranky. Thankfully it doesn't happen very often. If he invented the 130 Barnes I'd be in a quandary about what to load in all my 30's.

So what's the deal fireball 2? Did you come up with these copper 130 grain deals prior to meeting Steelhead? (As in independent thought)? Therefore resentful of his posts about said projectiles, or is this distasteful type keyboard behavior linked to perhaps Steelhead's alleged Troll like behavior?
