All 60 votes can do is end a filibuster. It takes 67 to override a veto or to convict an impeached president. There's no way we could get 67 votes for either.

It only takes a majority vote to end a filibuster, They changed the rule when the democrats were in charge and the Republicans were blocking some of the junk they wanted! Now the shoe is on the other foot - it takes 51 votes to end debate now and the Republicans should use that, Harry Reid did this and watch him bitch about it in 2015!

To get some good and big things done, Republicans are going to have to find 5 or 6 Democratic Senators who will cross the party line and vote with the Republicans on some big issues. Sometimes to over ride a veto and other times to get issues passed that need a supermajority on the vote due to the topic at hand.
Ideally we find 5 vulnerable Democrats with seats to defend in at 2016 and who live in red states or at lease red LEANING states.
Who fits this model? Can any of them bring themselves to support an impeachment hearing? Vote? That takes sixty as well. Mitch McConnel had best be about finding these men and courting them heavily. Maybe right into the Republican side of the house, even! Your thinking that 52 Rs will vote on the R side, and that aint going to happen either. 60 votes to overcome a Presidential veto is exceptionally difficult. You forget a pocket veto. That nuclear option rules chit has to be overcome also. Where Rs have the advantage in the Senate is controlling to agenda of the bills brought to the floor.

Impeachment aint gonna happen either. Impeachment takes place in the House an is in itself pretty difficult. A trial in the Senate aint gonna happen. All it would do is screw the Rs for the 2016 election. Articles of impeachment after hearing and then a trial in the senate will take over 2 years. No point of even going there.

Actually that only applies to a filibusters on "appointments", to end debate on actual legislation (cloture) there is still a 60 vote threshold to end filibusters. However, filibuster rules can be changed.

No democrats are going to vote to override an Obama veto so the republicans are really powerless to force through legislation.
Actually, I think there may be a chance that some will when it comes to the universally hated Obamacare.. Especially those states where Dems barely eked out a victory this election and their compatriots will be on the butcher block in '16.. They might be pushed enough to see the light and get rid of that pos law if for no other reason than to save their sorry azzes.. One can only hope.. My hope as well, and the reason I posted this query.

We should count to see how many dim Senators are up for reelection in 2016 as I don't believe the entire Senate turned over, did it? Take that number of dims and that is the number you can start with in tail twisting to get them to vote with the GOP on such issues. I put all this info up in an earlier thread. The Rs have more up for re-election in 2016. The Ds have 23 up in 2018.
America needs to understand that our troops are not 'disposable'. Each represents a family; Fathers, Mothers, Sons, Daughters, Cousins, Uncles, Aunts... Our Citizens are our most valuable treasure; we waste far too many.

Thank you for the correction on my faulty math and civics lesson everyone. To get enough D's to cross over on a vote, the legislation will have to be something pretty obviously a good fix and fairly innocuous. The really big stuff, like O care repeal outright will likely have to wait and simply be put into smaller bite sized chunks of passable and palatable pieces.
I wish the Liar in Chief had as much guts fighting the terrorists as he is likely to show in fighting the republicans. Sad state of affairs...

Sine the GOP has obstructed Hussein's agenda for the last six years (and justifiably so) how cooperative with the dems be in going along with the GOP's agenda?

Nothing good is going to happen. Generally speaking, we don't have to worry about anything really bad happening though, so that's good.
But in two years everyone will be completely disenchanted with the republicans that they're so excited about right now.
Then they'll start pouting about how they're not even gonna vote if a REAL conservative isn't on the ballot and we'll be in the same boat we were in on Monday. one of the most insightful and accurate analysts I read says the same thing but he don't wear aviators advantage Bluedreaux......grin we'll see a lot more noise about 3rd party candidates on the next prez election according to him this election wasn't so much about Republicans are great as Democrats just suck even more
I'm pretty certain when we sing our anthem and mention the land of the free, the original intent didn't mean cell phones, food stamps and birth control.
