my only sierra complaint was with the 165hpbt. But when a dumb--- wants to shoot deer with a hollow point you cant blame the bullet for being destructive. Pro hunters treat me well.

The only bullet of the "majors" I have NEVER shot in my 37 years of handloading. Not sure why but do not see a reason to look either? Doesn't take much at all to kill a deer though. Nice work for sure.

Nice deer, a bud of mine killed the largest wt buck I've ever seen in the flesh with a single Sierra 150 gr BTSP from his 270 Winchester, at the shot, the buck jumped the fence row and piled up on the other side, wide eyed and glassy.

They have killed whitetail, mulies, elk, and my wife shot her moose with her 300 WSM and the 180's this fall. No failures yet, and they've filled our freezers for many years.

You might want to read what Sierra, the manufacturer, says about the 165 grain HPBT. It's a tougher bullet than the pro hunter. The terminal performance of a bullet is a function of several factors including lead alloy hardness, jacket thickness and jacket design. Whether a bullet is a hollowpoint or soft point has little to do with its terminal performance. I guess only a " dumb--" would use a Barnes TSX on big game. Would be interested in specifics of your experience with this bullet.

The tour at the Sierra bullet company is pretty impressive thing to take.
It's fairly close to where I live so .. I'm glad I made the run.

same exact bullet I used in my 7x300 wtby.
Results. S ometimes great. Sometimes explosive, sometimes didn't open much.
When you head shoot one deer and its caliber in and nickel out, some otehrs that are caliber in and egg out. And then you get small or large exits out of lung shots...
The final killer was a 60 pound pig at under 150 yards stopping the bullet completely with a neck shot.....
Nope, won't trust a bullet that erratic.

Rost: yea, I don't think I'd trust a Sierra, or ANY CnC bullet, at the velocities you are probably getting from a 7-300 WBY Well, except for paper and varmints.
Edited to add: BTW, which bullet are you referring to. I don't see a 165gr 7mm bullet on sierras web site. Thx

I've learned to appreciate the 160 game king at 7X57 velocities. Enough that I bought up a bunch just in case I need em for a rainy day.

Elmer Keith loaded thousands of those 160 GameKings in the 7x57 for Don Hopkins, the "H" in OKH.
Hopkins and his wife shot them a lot both for practice and as their primary load for smaller plains game in Africa, back in the day when safaris were often 2-3 months long, and a lot of meat animals were taken, both to feed the safari crew and as bait for leopard and lion.
I've also used the 160 GameKing considerably in the 7x57 (though not as much as they did), and not just in North America but Africa. It works great at a muzzle velocity of 2650-2700 on animals up to 250 pounds or so.

Uh huh (agreed) . It works great at a muzzle velocity of 2650-2700 on animals up to 250 pounds or so. That tells us something, if we pay attention and that's why I refuse to use them.

I used 165hpbt gameking in 308 rem 660. was very destructive would often see huge exit holes. I know sierra says they are harder than pro hunters and have read here and other places of guys using them on elk with good results. I only shot about 7 or 8 deer, with all bullets form one box. A small sample, but i went back to what i liked after that. No i am not flaming sierra i like their stuff and either use them or nosler most times.

There was a stretch of time when my father was getting invitations to deer hunt at various leases/camps maintained by companies he did business with. He shot many deer with 150 grain Sierras out of a 30-06 and 130's out of a 270, and he never had a problem. I know the loads because I loaded the ammo.

Nice buck and pleasing performance from the projectile.
I'd not hesitate to push one through a deer; especially since I have no magnums. Seems they're great for deer.

That makes me happy. The more of you guys buy Sierra, the less competition there is for bullets I prefer.
