Recently took delivery of a 6X45 caliber rifle built on a Rem 700 action, Benchmark 1-10 twist barrel, Shilen trigger and walnut, ADL stock. I put a Nightforce 2-10X32 scope on it and took it to a farm I've hunted for years in eastern North Dakota. All of the many deer I've shot on this farm have been with a 30-06 (except for one with a .270) The deer run big and fat from eating the area corn all fall but ranges are relatively short averaging 75-200 yards. With a buck tag, I only saw does the first two days but early this past Sunday, this feller walked into a corner of the field where 6 does were feeding. He dropped with one shot at about 125 yards. The bullet was a 85 grain Nosler Partition on top of 25 gr. of H335. All work on the rifle was done by Dave Sink out of Clemmons, NC. He has built several rifles for me and I've never been disappointed with the quality of workmanship and attention to detail. He is a true friend and professional gunsmith that I would recommend to anyone considering a custom build. This rifle is a keeper; I might have to retire my 30-06.

No worries, Mathman. You're ahead of me. I will be 55 years old tomorrow and am just now discovering that you don't need a .30 caliber bullet to take down a fat whitetail. That pic is after I gutted him and got help from the neighbors and their pickup getting him to the skinning shed.

You will be using ultralight fishing tackle soon too. As I aged I figured out we tend to use guns and tackle that are entirely too big. You will love the 6x45

Dave Sink pointed me to that bullet. The buck was quartering away from me so I hit him a little further back than I would have liked but it went through his lungs, clipped his spine and ended up underneath his left armpit. It "mushroomed" just like the pics in the ads.

I have begun to wonder why I ever thought I needed some of the rifles in my safe. I am anxious to get done with rehabbing knees and hunt next year. Probably take my .25 TCU this time.

Next you'll be using a 223 AI w Barnes, and yes I too have gravitated to Ultralights Congrats, nice deer. My TCU was the mildest round next to 221/222/223s - Enjoy - a x45 is too easy

Nice buck.....I just had one built this summer on a Remington 788 action. Put a 22" lightweight contour barrel from Pac-nor (1:8 twist) and found a load that it liked with 85 grain Sierra BTGK. Just shot this turkey with it yesterday in PA can't wait to try it out on deer in a few weeks! PennDog

A few years back I passed up a custom Remington 788 in 6X45MM at a very good price. Still think about it every now and then.

Great looking buck taken with a cartridge that I'd really like to spend some time with.

Nice Turkey, many years ago, American Rifleman did a story on the 6x45 in a 788.
