This will differ if you are a farmer with 1000 prarie dogs in your pasture, a fur collector of bobcat and fox or a rancher in Wyoming raising sheep....Add your circumstance or activities to justify your post !! (fun, boredom, yet fun !)

As long as you limit yourself to nothing larger than squirrels, the 375H&H is perfect. whistle

I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.

Seems like when I grab my 204's and shoot them, I remember why I like them so well!

These ridiculous opinion polls never answer the real question of what is best. The 222 Remington magnum is, in fact, utopia in the realm of varmint cartridges. Anything less is just that and there isn't anything more...

If fur is not a factor I would use a .243 barrel life can go in a hurry if you run it hot. Second .223

I am a Coyote caller that loves it when a bobcat shows up...hide preservation is not my primary concern. For me, the 223AI is what makes me happy. For my calling partner, the 243AI is his preference. Either one makes them dead.

For long range coyotes I like my .257 Roberts and a 75g V-MAX.

For the smaller stuff I use a .22-250.

For high volume stuff you need multiple rifles. I've added a .223 to the safe. It will do 90% of what the .22-250 will do but with less powder and less barrel heating and cheaper factory ammo if that is a concern.

My .22LR has taken untold numbers of prairie dogs but doesn't have the range of the centerfires.

Coyote Hunter - NRA Patriot Life, NRA Whittington Center Life, GOA, DAD - and I VOTE!

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Either the 17 Rem, 204 Ruger, 223 Rem, 22-250, or 243, depending on situation.

We've got it good these days when it comes to selection.

This hunting season I saw more grizzlies than coyotes. I will stick with the 9.3X62.

For little stuff it's the 204. Or for doggies including wolves the 253 (243AI) with the 105 A-Max.

Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

As hogs and coyotes are our main "varmints", I'd say the .243 is about right for the average shooter (here). That said I use a 22-250...but I'm not "average". smile

.223 is the perfect varmint round when you might see some deer.
