My first desire was a 405, but after looking at the recoil, I decided for something less. The 35 was a consideration, but after looking at guns, calibers and configurations, I took this 40-72. I don't see me having more than one 1895, but I could be wrong...

Every time I think I know something about Winchesters, there's a rifle that proves me wrong! I replied earlier to Clarkm that .30 U.S. is the .30-40 and .30 Gov't is the .30-03/06. Then you post your .30 U.S. Mod 1903 and I'm off base, again! I guess you can't count on anything being standard with old Winchesters.
That's a beautiful carbine you have there! I notice the two dots on the elevation scale of the Lyman. I read somewhere that's an indication of it being a factory installed option. Did you letter it?

In my recollection of my experience, the M1895 in .30/40 Krag are marked .30 US or .30 US Army and the .30/03's and .30/06's have "Govt" in the cartridge marking. I'm just going on memory as I have no reference materials at hand (in others words, I'm working without a net today) wink

As far as having that carbine lettered, it's way too late production.

Steely,
That would be my choice too! Or .303 British. Has a real nice one pass thru the shop in .303 about 10 years ago!

But that 35 just sings to me!

That was my thoughts too, but your '95 .30/03 rifle is marked ".30 US MOD 1903.", not "Govt".
Winchester labeled their ammo a bit different too. That bottom box kaywoodie posted is ".30-220 Caliber". That's alot of powder behind a .30 bullet! crazy

You are of course correct and I am... getting old. I guess all we can safely conclude is that the .30/40 and the .30/03 and .30/06's are not marked identically. And I agree, a .30 caliber loaded with 220 grains of powder - must be using a very light bullet? wink

Here's my .35 WCF and yes, other than being refined in England (claw mount scope and pad) it is original as ordered (not even a special order but a cataloged caliber). smile

You "looked" at the 405 recoil? Or felt it? I shoot my .405 often, and can assure you that the recoil is not bad, and I'm not a sadist for recoil either! Also, I have a .35WCF 1895 and brass is tough to find for it, although it's easily formed from .30-40 brass.

Can I assume your .405 is at least outfitted with a shotgun style butt? Also, I have heard of problems associated with forming .35WCF brass out of .30-40 - apparently you aren't encountering any?

Both of my 405's shoot very well with little recoil, more of a shove. The regular one will shoot 3" groups at 100 yds with regular Hornady ammo,i dont shoot the deluxe one much. grin

Yes it's simple 30/40 ammo. 220 is the bullet weight. Cases are marked .30 Army.

Yes, I surmised as much, but it's interesting how things were done "back in the day". Today unfortunately, it's a lawsuit in the making.

Thanks. If anyone here has another, or knows of another, I'd like to hear about it.
