With a few modifications this screed could have been written in 1855 instead of a few days ago. It shows that we have the same divisions with the same issues. Namely, the New England Yankees and their historical progeny, the progressive liberals, want more and more central government intervention in the daily lives of Americans and the South, as a region, stands culturally against it and thwarts the Yankees in their attempts to fully control the government.

In those days the issues were things like using federal funds to support the transcontinental railroad and tariff issues. Today, it is more comprehensive redistribution of the wealth for a socialist utopia.

But, in both instances, the Yankees reacted with fury and hurled the vilest insults and used race to claim the moral high ground and beat the South over the head with it. In those days, all Southerners were either vile slave owners or their slack jawed dupes. Today, they are all horrible racists and toothless inbreds living on the government dole graciously given to them by righteous states like Connecticut.

Haha. I'm not reading any screed. Everyone knows the civil war was fought for the same reason as the first American revolution - tyrannical tax practices.

The civil war was fought to destroy the economy of the south. The south had to fall because they were printing their own money and competing with the USA.

What Yankee industrialist scheme did the Southern block in Congress continually thwart in the years leading up to the Civil War? Who and what were Lincoln's biggest clients when he was an Illinois lawyer?

The same liberal Yankees did everything they could to help the British during the revolution.

I wasn't until the Continentals won that they STFU.

When I was in elementary school, I was taught that the Civil War was fought to free the slaves.

When I was in high school, I was taught that the Civil War was fought over states rights verses preserving the union.

When I was in college, I was taught that the Civil War was really a socio-economic struggle to determine if the industrial and urban North could dominate the rural, agricultural South.

Now that I am mature enough to look at all the facts and make up my own mind I have determined that the war was fought for all of those reasons including slavery. It was determined that one man cannot enslave another but the Federal government has enslaved the entire nation.

I love my country and I fought in Viet Nam because my country asked me to fight. But I fear our government. The federal government is the greatest threat to our freedom.

The Civil War was about a lot of things.
But all of us up here in Lincoln Land have always know the Civil War was about the right for a state to secede. That was paramount and it was finally affirmed that individual states do not have that right.
It was a high cost argument.

A lot of things, is right, including class warfare against the South's landed gentry, and a big part of that centered on States Rights and against a more centralized Fed.

It is a real eye opener when you look close at southern state deomgraphics.

Quite honestly the church going country blacks I have run into along the way were wonderful folks mostly.

Just read Dabney's bio of Jackson last month. After Fredricksburg and all the vicious blood letting and yankee looting but also the slaughter one Confederate was grieved with it all and one fellow commented to him... "but we were invaded"

This was the fall back position in their Christian souls... "we were invaded" and it makes a great deal of sense to me to understand how and why Jackson drove his men so hard marching 25 miles per day and then fighting like banshees.
