Sometime in the future I would like to make myself one light weight rifle.

It will be a Rem 700 in 30-06. Most likely use a factory barrel but a custom is not out of the question. Probably go with a Leupy in 2-7 or 2.5-8.

What are some ways you guys can suggest to shave some weight?

Also, NO I don't want a Tikka or kimber. I don't like how Tikka's feel and I don't like the 3 pos safety of the Kimbers. I owned a tack driving 325wsm in a Montucky 10 years ago, could never get used to the safety so I sent it down the road.

Stock(Edge, Ti, Bansner, etc), aluminum FP assembly, stamped follower, Ti job on the bolt, Talley LWs to name a few.

McMillan edge, bansner, or bc ti takeoff in ADL. Fluted barrel, bolt and action slabbed. I have seen a few done by kampfeld that look awesome. Talley lightweight rings and aluminum FP shroud can save a few oz also.

Mine is a B series BDL. Sold the stock and bolt shroud/firing pin. Bought a Mcmillan classic swirly, dropped in a PTG aluminum pin and bolt shroud, had it bedded and shoots great. Also have a Bansner stock, used it on a short action 700 with a flip flop pad and painted it. For the money didn't find carving on the action worth it.

If I was a righty, I'd buy a laminated, ss, 30-06 mtn rifle, trip the stock, and drop it in a mountain rifle mcmillan stock.

How light do you want to go?? If you want sub 6 lbs......you need to get reacquainted with the Montana's. Mine with a Swaro Z3 3-9x36 and Talley LW's and Titanium bolt handle goes 5 lbs 15 oz. I have an alum T/G on order that will shave off another ounce or so.

700 1st Gen Ti 30-06 w/6x42 and Talley's and Hunter's Edge ADL goes 6 lbs 2 oz.

Faux Ti with treatments (posts above) will go 6-1/2 lbs or so.

16Bore has some good pics of faux Ti's on the scale.

ETA: Here's a Classic 300 Savage dropped into an Edge ADL stock with the Talley's and the 2.5-8x. I was surprised at the light weight. And it has a 24" sporter contour.

Here's a faux Ti w/o the bolt fluting. Mtn rifle contour Rock 25-204 cut at 22" in a Hunter's Edge. It does have the alum bolt shroud and fluted pin. Kampfeld bolt treatment would bring it down to about 6 lbs 9 ozs (see next post).

Kampfeld treatment only shaves 1.7 ozs. Both SA bolts....both have alum shroud/fluted pin. Kampfeld does have hollow knob.....just doesn't show in the pic.

Cheapest way would be to shop around for awhile and find a takeoff Ti or stainless mountain rifle 30-06 barrel. They are 22", though.....which I prefer.

257,

I'm getting ready to ship my bolt to Kampfeld. It's a SS 700. Do I need to have him bead blast it or anything too? Or does it match up pretty good?

Sorry for the sidetrack...

I wouldn't do anything extra except have him remove the jeweling. He has that on the order form. It was done to the bolt shown above.

ETA: But I haven't had any stainless bolts done.....so somebody else might chime in.

Thanks. Seems like the jeweling would automatically be removed???

This might help the OP:

No......it will be there between the flutes unless you tell him to remove it. You'll see the $5 option to remove jeweling after fluting.

Ok, thanks.

BTW, this is for the 7-08 I just bought. We talked about it before. It'll be headed to Fosnaugh for a barrel chop (22"), Timney and skim bedded in a McMillan Hunters Edge! Might get the Talley's Cerekoted too.

Will do. Might re-barrel in a year or so if it doesn't shoot.

I'd like to have them mill flats on one of my actions.....just for fun.....and have it engraved with "GFY".

Didn't read the thread so may duplicate someone's post. Micro-cell recoil pad takes off a couple ounces. Fluting the barrel can take off substantial weight.

If you turn down the action and trim up the tang you can drop almost 4oz. Flute the bolt and put a featherweight barrel with minium shank. It costs a lot to get them really light. A lot of machining time.

I never weighed the action before and after but 33/40 Mauser cut are cool.
