I am looking to get an older Toyota 4 wd pickup for beating around in and doing chores.

Looking for one of the old indestructible pickups from years ago, but I don't know much about the Toyota.

What year/s to look for?
Years to avoid?
Most desirable long-running engine?

Any general advice would be appreciated.

My favorite was the straight front axle with a 22R and 5 speed. They're hard to find in any kind of shape but not expensive to put back in servicable condition.

4 cylinder and a manual. All the 22 series motors are great.

The wheeler fellas love the solid front axel, the IFS are great to though.

Condition is the big thing. Most have been hacked up and beat on.

The best was: 1985 with the 22RE and 5 speed tranny.

get one with a 2200 RE, and the 5 speed manual...

worth the look finding one...

I've got one that I purchased new in 1988... with two miles on it...

currently has 532,000 on it...

Slap some wheels and tires on the ones sitting in DeFlaves yard and you'll be good to go. May need to bring your own lawn mower to get at 'em...even now...in late December...in north central Montana...but whatever...

Leave the cinder blocks though because he has to re-level his trailer in the spring...

Drove an '87 22RE , five speed manuel until '99. Tired of shifting the 5 speed with nearly all my driving in town, so purchased a 2000 with automatic in Oct. '99. Never had a minutes trouble with either.

The 2000 is still my only transportation. It will outlast me.

I have a 1987 Toyota 4X4 that I bought new in December of 1986. It just turned 28 years old. I have about 200k miles on it.It is the best truck or car I have ever bought. It has never gave me any trouble. I have the 22r engine which has the carb instead of fuel injection. I kinda of wish I had the fuel injection. The Toyota mechanics want to buy it from me because they know I have taken care of it. They have offered me up to 6K dollars for my truck which to me is a lot for a 28 year old truck. I think book value is about 1500. It has been through a lot of mud during hunting season but I never abused it. The red clay here in Middle Georgia is fun during hunting season. You slip and slid all the way to where you are going to hunt. I have the five speed and it gets decent gas milage. I have had the truck so long it is like part of the family. Good luck with your search.

1985 is the last year of the straight axles.

22R with EFI is the motor you want.

5 speed manual. The four speeds can be problematic and the five speeds are bomb proof.

But honestly, any Toyota with the 22R and a five speed is going to be pretty UBER. Be it independent front suspension or the coveted straight axle.

Don't overlook the old 4Runners. They can often be found for significantly less but they are just as off road capable and are great vehicles.

The only thing I can add is don't expect to find a good one cheap. It happens, but I wouldn't count on it. They are gold to an outdoorsman.

Because you told me about the wild night with Big Agnes, Queen of Havre trailer park, and how the back of the trailer got rocked off the blocks.

My son just graduated from college and wants to sell a 1995 Toyota extra cab 4x4 six cylinder with 5 speed manual.
200,000 miles with no rust.
He is asking $2,500 and lives in Fargo North Dakota.

I was referring to people that could actually afford one.

Not you.
