Maybe put a heavy barrel varmint upper on my AR and pick up a 223 or 22-250 bolt. That way I have 2 rifles to switch from.
Now that I think about it maybe a bolt in 22-250 makes sense if I have a heavy upper in 223.
any experience with the sps varmint in 22-250? I think tikka has a varmint model in 250 as well but it's a bit more $. I suppose the t3 lite in 250 is an option but again it is a sporter barrel. Any problems with the t3 lite in 250?
I note that you have not PD hunted before so use a little caution before spending money where you may not need to. First you need to realize that 500 PD days are like half-inch groups on the internet, they happen occasionally but in real life are relatively uncommon. Depending on where you are 100 to 150 per day may be more common. There are a lot of folks shooting PDs now and it is getting harder to find high volume shooting.
If you could pick up the Tikka at a decent price then it would be a great walking varminter. Load it with 40 gr bullets at around 3700-3800 fps and it is deadly, the 40's cut the wind well, and you can see most of your hits (or misses)using them whereas if you use 50's or heavier you will start losing sight of your hits with the lighter rifle.
Either use your AR as is for a secondary rifle using the same load formula or pick up a Rem 700 SPS Varminter in 223. With the Remington the factory trigger will be the weak link because it is tough to get them under a 3 lb pull.
I do have a couple of 22/250 heavy barrels that I shoot 50 gr bullets driven at 3800 fps, but a 22/250 will wear on you if you shoot them constantly and they heat up much faster than a 223.
My advice - just run two 223's you won't give up much in the way of effective range.

p.s. another consideration may be the Ruger American. No personal experience with them but a lot of folks on the 'fire seem taken with them.
