I drew moose tags in two states. So I hunted both Utah and Colo. I also hunted elk in Nev, Utah, Ariz and New Mex. Why ?? I am retired and like to hunt.

H 870 With 160 to 175 grain bullets has given me best velocity and accuracy. RL22 was accurate but not as fast.

7 mag is not the best for moose, yes it will kill moose, I used mine for 10 of 20 yrs I owned it most moose required a follow up shot. The 7's are trajectory magnums not power magnums such as any 416/458. They are best used with a 140gr premium bullet, any thing else is a compromise. So, iIus I used for many years a Hornaday 175 sp at 2800 fps, this is to fast for this bullet in the first 100 yds, great bullet in a 280 though, then switched to Barnes X 175gr at 2775 fps, recovered one bullet out of 5 moosewith this set up. If you must use the 7mag for moose a 175gr at or around 2800fps will be OK but expect a well hit moose needing a follow up shot. This is my experience only.

Shot through a 225yd Moose's shoulders last year,with a 120TSX at 3050fps muzzle velocity,outta my 22" Ti 7-08.

Can't know which hit the ground first, his ass or his nose.

Never wiggled..................

Having taken several moose myself and having witnessed many more taken with the 7mmremmag and 7mmstw,that certainly is not my experience.Premium 140gr bullets have done a fine job of making one shot kills on moose.

I am talking about one shot any angle, the 33's ,35's 36's and 37's are a much better choice. If most hunting is deer sized game with an occasional moose thrown in then a 7mag will suffice. I am not arguementative here just stating what i have witnessed in the field. Then again my hunting partner likes a 270 win on everything,I have seen dramatic one shot kills on perfectly placed shots and following blood trails to there end, no moose at the end of this rainbow severa ltimes. Hunting is not an exact science so a big / heavy bullet willgive you an extra margin when the going gets tough.

I like the way the X traverses anatomy, from any/all angles.

The boolit needn't be "big",nor "heavy".

Fact is,light for diameter X's are the most wicked, for inflicting trauma......................

Definitely dump the Sierra's except for practice. 140 grain (and up) TSX, Partition, Accubond's would all work and are usually easily available.

Her eis a post I did on abnotehr forum, about the 7RM and the 1409gr TSX, which will go hunting this seaosn for moose, elk and sheep. Based on previous X bullet terminal erformance, I am sure it will do well, for any angle that is presented to me.

Ruger Mdl 77 MKII Stainless.
B&C Synthetic stock
Timney trigger
Leupold 2.5-8x36 Vari X III

.284 140gr TSX
IMR 7828
Federal 215Match Magnum Primer
Winchester cases (Flashhole deburred, +/- 1gr in weight, trimmed evenly, chamfered)

I often work up a load by firing multiple charges at the same target. This allows me to monitor the velocities, as well as see what charges will fall close together. Then I generally pick the best 3 and experiemnt with them.

Generally, I want to get bullets seated close to the lands- .030-.050 off. Barnes often reccomends .050.

In this case, it was impossible to get the 140gr TSX anywhere near the lands. This rifle is well worn, and I've watched the throat erode for some time. Since this was to be a hunting load, I seated the bullets so they would easily fit in the magazine box.

First 3 shots:
67, 68, 68.5

Finished target:

67
68
68.5
69
69.5
70
70.5
71
71.5
72
72.5

There were 2 flyers in the group of 12, Don't know what happened, it coudl have been a change in hold, a gust of wind or something, who knows? I'm not going to worry about it.

Due to failing light and possibly the wind, the chrono stopped workign at 3027FPS, a charge of 70.5 grains.

Although I experienced no real pressure signs, the 73gr load recoiled a bit harder than it shoudl, and I needed to use 2 fingers to lift the bolt instead of one, but I couldn't say what the velocity was.

I think I will go with a charge in the 71-72gr area, as it shoudl attain approx 3100-3200fps, which will give me good velocity, excellent accuracy and be comfortable to shoot.

Group size for 12 rouds was about 1.5-1,75"

Well said.I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a moose at any angle shooting the 180gr tsx out of my 300ultramag.

Funny thing is,those varmint bullets made 8 one shot kills on elk in a row.I just happen to like the tsx better.
