Serious question.

Found an unused 18 oz spray can while cleaning the garage. Bought it years ago I think for coating the engine and wheels on my dirt bike before a trip to Padre Island that never materialized.

Seems like when I was a kid WD40 was the be-all and the end-all, on a par with duct tape and vice grips. Other than maybe freeing stuck bolts it seems there always something better, and maybe even better at freeing stuck bolts. More times than not for everything from guns to bicycles one hears admonishments against using WD40.

So, whats it good for? Or should I just toss the spray can? (still has pressure).

Hey, at least this ain't quite on a par with TRH's "what are dewberries?" query grin

A lot of Halibut and Salmon fishermen swear by it for an attractant to improve their baits...
Going fishing soon?

"What is WD40 good for anymore?"

If you owned as much old farm row crop equipment as I do you wouldn't ask that question. grin

I soak some overnight in a vat of it.

It's just as good as it always was for the same things it was always good for. There are more effective anti-seize compounds now, but if it works on what you've got, so what?

Just sprayed some on the door hinge on my truck that has been squeaking for about the past year. Would not have been my first choice but someone had a can out for something else already.

Excellent for electrical contact on anything corroded....original app. I believe, electrical conductivity. Up Nort, lots of salt on the roads in winter, trailer plugins on cars/turcks get a dose of corrosion, no matter how well protected,WD 40 keeps em working.

I have only two uses for WD40, removing the sticky left behind when removing tape & labels and as a lubricant when wet sanding metal. As a rust protectant/penetrating oil there are other much better products.

Water displacement was primary purpose of developers. That effect causes it to be useful in preventing/overcoming corrosion, but lots of other good added effects - as folks list above.

That's pretty much the way I feel too, it still works great for what I need.

As an aside, I gotta ask.... Is there anybody here who can say without a doubt they've had better success while using WD on baits or lures? This comes up often and fisherman like to fight about it... But I've never seen it play out. Most I know who are believers still argue that WD is packed with fish oils and won't be convinced otherwise..

I commercial fished for halibut with a guy that did not believe. The first trip with WD-40 the average size was significantly bigger than it had been and the total was very good for a 24-hour opener.

On subsequent trips the numbers continued to show a huge advantage with WD-40.

In SE AK every boat used it back in the '70s and '80s while Kodiak boats rarely did. For a while there were a lot more Kodiak boats using it and lately it seems there is a lot less enthusiasm for WD-40...
