Hi guys, My grandma just gave me a Savage Model 99F in 250-3000 serial# 763958
The story from her is gramps bought it for her back in the day. She has whats left of the original box of ammo she put through the gun as well as a box of peterson ammo bought at the local woolworths. The gun does have a couple of little knicks in the wood but so minute you can't see them. The bluing on this gun is still just like new. I am sure this gun has never been refinished. The lever has this crazy looking dark blue/silver finish on it. The rifle did have a scope on it but it also has screws in the back for a rear sight of some sort. I bought a couple of boxes of new ammo for it to shoot but I wanted to get an Idea on what I have here before I go and ruin the value of a collectors item. I think this gun has been carried more than it has been shot. Grandma says she never even got a deer with it. She can't remember how many bullets have been throgh it but not that many. Grandpa kept the Weaver k4 scope. Thanks

Nice...yep it's collectable...I'd likely put it away if it's as nice as you indicate.

Man, the first thang I'd do is take it completely apart and clean and lube 'er..:) The refurbish the finish on the stockworks.. Then work up some decent loads and sell the old stuff to Jed..:) Then I'd take 'er hunting( but not stowed under the truck seat)..:) or loan it to JJHack (see the African forum) for his next African Safari so's we could see IF the 250-3000 really is a good plains game rifle..:)
Seriously, very nice that you have a rifle your Grandma was given back when..If you're from the south, that makes you pretty young still..:) So where's Grandpa and what happened to the K4X Weaver and does the rifle still have the bases-mounts or what? We need pictures!..:)jim

Hope ya have more then one rifle...cause ya need to put that one in a safe place and shoot another. But if ya just have to shoot it...might be nice to take Grandma along.

I will take some pictures to post here. Grandpa used the weaver to upgrade his 1903 sporter from 2.5power to 4 power. The rifle still has the mounts. I put a tasco scope on it for now. I want to shoot it. I will post the pics and let you guys see this little gem.

You need to keep your grandma on your christmas card list. That was nice of her to give a fine rifle.
You need to see if you can get grandpa to let go of the K-4 and put it back where it belongs. Welcome to the forum.

You have a great rifle there... very collectible and in a very popular caliber. Baby that thing cuz it's value is only going up..
Get a smith to put on a decent scope, pick up some ammo and take her out to shoot. You'll love the 250 Savage.. great caliber.
And really looking forward to pics!

Where is a good place to get ammo? I can't find any around here. the guy at the gun store said this is an obsolete round and the gun only has value to collectors.(that was right before he offered to consign itfor me). Also what would be a good scope to put on it. The weaver 2.5 grandpa has is very cloudy thats why he switched out the k4. I put a tasco 6x24 target scope on there because thats what I had. I also have a Redfield 3X9 here. I don't want to spend a whole lot ($100-200). What kind of Iron sights came on this type of gun? I have seen both peep and v-type? Also Does anyone know the year of manufacture and value on this ? serial # is 763958

Thanks again for the great info. My father never had any intrest in guns and once I came home with a deer rifle grandma asks if I want her deer rifle too. I said yes and now the old man is bent out of shape over it.... To bad for him

There are a lot of vintage lower power Weaver scopes out there and many can be had at a reasonable price. As long as you handle it with some care, I wouldn't worry that shooting the rifle will affect the collectability. It is not unfired, so you can shoot it some and it will not change the condition it is presently in. I would probably not hunt it. Although I agree with the others about the getting the Tasco off of it, as long as it is on there, I would do a little shooting with it before I took it off. A 24 power scope is going to help you figure out what kind of accuracy the rifle is capable of vs. a low power scope. The range I go to has a 300 yard bench and if it were me, I'd be there this Saturday morning with a box of shells and that scope set on 24x. By the way, the "crazy looking dark blue/silver finish" you mention on the lever is called color case hardening. And from the way you describe it - it sounds like it is quite vivid. By the way, it has been said that this very thin and fragile substance (case color), is by weight, probably the most valueable substance on the planet.

Whichever one of those Weavers is cloudy could be sent to the Weaver repair/rebuild center in El Paso, TX. Do a seach on scopes and you'll come up with the link and phone number.

Grandmas99f.......
According to my records, your rifle was manufactured in 1955 and should have an "G" Lever Boss Code.

It can be a little hard to find from time to time. Look for 250 Savage too. Two different names for the same round. Check out the online ammo stores. Here's where to get Grandpa's Weaver cleaned up. He does good work. Note that this is only for the original Weaver scopes made in El Paso, TX and marked as such. The newer Weaver scopes are a whole different company that licensed the Weaver trademark. Not that they're that bad a scope, just different from the original. http://www.weaver-scope-repair.com/

If you're looking for a more modern scope with more power than a 2.5x or 4x, the Leupold Vari-X I is reasonably priced with good quality. At the upper end of your price range, but you'll never regret owning a Leupold.
The 250-3000 is definitely not obsolete, still made by all the major manufacturers. As Skidrow said, it's much more commonly known as the 250 Savage nowadays. I'd compare it to the 243 Winchester for capability, so it'll be a great deer rifle for you. About the only ammo made is 100 grain bullets (yours may or may not shoot these EXTREMELY well). A lot of the pre-1960 rifles liked the shorter 87 grain bullets better, but give yours a try.
I'd HIGHLY suggest cleaning the barrel and chamber also if it hasn't been shot in the last 40 years or so.
If you can't find a store that sells the ammo, you can always order online from Cabelas or any of a number of other dealers that will ship ammo straight to your house. Better to find somewhere local so you don't have to pay shipping.

Cabelas sells it and both Remington and Winchester make it. It is now called the 250 Savage but they're the same caliber. If you don't reload already now is a good time to start. Oh yea, if it were me, I wouldn't sell that rifle on a bet! Get you a good Weaver K4 and put it on there and go kill some deer.

.250 has a reputation for excellent accuracy, likely be the most accurate cartridge you can find in a lever aciton rifle.
