A heavenly kit for the God of drummers! (Now, how much would it cost me to have a guitar made from that log.....)  (I know....its oak, so...no)  I listened to a Rush album I had not listened to in a while the other day. He really is technically more advanced than anyone. Any an incredible lyricist as well. twofish I love Neil but you need to listen to more music bro. Not being an azz, just there are more drummers out their with WAY more chops. Now a days every drummer that isn't a country drummer or some top 40 shmo is pretty bad azz. Derick Roddy, Gene Hoglan, Goerge Kolias, Chris Adler are some awesome metal drummers amazing feet. Vinny something I cant remember how to spell his last name he used to play for sting, its pronounced col-you-toe but spelled way different. Anyway he's a great drummer. Dave Weckle is in the same vein. The days of idolizing guys from past rock bands is over imho. Technical playing has come a long ways. In the late 80s and early 90s I played in a touring metal band and everywhere I went people would tell me how my kickdrums were blazing fast or how brutal and technical my grooves and fills were but now I probably couldn't even get in a touring metal band if I had to audition, that's how far technical playng has come. The only part that has suffered from the technical advancment is most of the new drummers are pussified as they play with little tiny sticks and tap around on the drums like they don't want to break them. You gotta play with fire cause at the end of the day its what makes the music sound good, the right groove played with the right additude. That is why neil is so good he is balanced, good grooves, fills and played with fire! But he's definitely not the most tecnical.

I love DW drums. The most awesome drums I ever played were Premier Signias. The best bass drums I ever played were Pearl Masters the bottom was amazing. DWs seem to be the most consistent. Toms are always open with lots of sustain unless they are wearing pinstrips and great tone, their bass drums are nice too. I don't know about any companies snares cause you can't beat a ludwig super sensitive. I am blessed to own 2 of them a 6.5" and a 5".
Neals new kit looks gorgeous but I would have loved to hear them! My son had a Pearl endorsement for a couple years and I have always felt that the Pearl Masters bass drums were the best. They could cut through anything and always overcame acoustics in the lousiest rooms and lousy sound men.

Certainly not the most technical, he's more of an innovator making technical actually sound good. What I like about Peart is his composing. His drum lines can be technical and simple at the same time. Other "technical" drummers sound; well technical. Peart does the technical stuff (in an age well before Pro Tools, etc), yet it doesn't sound cluttered or forced, where a lot of guys who could out-drum Peart all day long, they sound cluttered and forced when they compose the drumming for a song. Peart will go down as one of the greatest, because he's a monster musician, not just a technical drummer. I've seen several guys whom no one has ever heard of who are technically more sound, technically more gifted, and just tear up a kit much better than Peart. But I've never seen a drummer like Peart who can hold his own with the best, is a master in his composing and making it all work in the song, to the better of the song, and not just to the better of Peart...and a work ethic of 40+ years of pushing the envelope of his craft. He's a world class musician...but there are oodles of drummers who are technically "better".

You don't always have to use the monster chops.
Neil doesn't overplay the song and make it about his playing.

gun geek and goalie your last post are spot on. The key is to play technical grooves and fills that feel smooth and at peace even though they may be hard to play or wildly timed. Dream theater is a prime example of the opposite of that. They can play but their music sux.

I can't view the photo or video for some reason, but I knew who's drum set you HAD to be referring to before I clicked---------------if it was in fact UBER. Neil Peart is an insanely good drummer, and the real front man for Rush IMO.

When it takes another musician to appreciate your work, you suck.
That's what I see with a lot of music today, great musicians who are so good they suck. I'll take a drummer like Meg White over tons of drummers who are "better". I especially see that in metal today. Talented, can play any beat you could ask for, but suck anyway.

Most of the time in the world of music, less is more..... Guess this is why I am more of a blues player than anything. Sealbilly I'll give you that I have not "kept up" with alot of music made in the last 30 years or so especially in the Metal genre. I kind of gave up on it early in the 80's when it mostly went hair. Kind of felt like the music that I loved died about then. Perhaps I should have chosen words more carefully than technical. The fast and furious world of speed metal and such just does not do it for me, technical prowess aside. No offense intended.  Goalie likely better described my feelings in his post.
