Found a really nice 358 in the 919xxx range. I read all the "indicators" as to likely models and the R fit nicely ... rounded forearm, capped pistol grip, hand checked, circa 1957-58, oil finished, and of course the 358 caliper. AND .... AND, I found the R.


Then, I'm looking at a 308 on Gunbroker in similar serial number range and it looked like my rifle, but lo and behold it was marked on the right side of the bbl 99F. So I go to the safe and my 358 R had changed into a very clearly marked 99F.
The finesse of the F started to show thru and then I noticed how light it was ... 6 1/2 lbs. So, F it is.

You're not going to want to shoot that w/o a pad, and you're not going to want to put a pad on it.

You're screwed.

I'd shoot the heck out of it....but might put a pad on me, after a few.😳

The original owner prolly shot it once or twice and said F that.

Put it in the gun safe for 60 years and turned up somewhere in and estate sale.

Not being critical, that is a beautiful rifle, just curious... is that some sort of filler between the wood and metal in the close-up of the "R" ?

I'd shoot it but if you're shooting from a bench I'd put a bag of shot between it and my shoulder. Beautiful rifle.

Ya gotta appreciate Fireball2's perspectve. Nice F. The barrel boss is a dead giveaway. You can always try a slip on pad. Leather lace on pads look appropriate for these rifles. You could also just grow a big callous on your shoulder. Very nice rifle!

I would have never thought of that. You guys are some outside the box thinkers! Gunna look a little funny rubbing up against the corner of the garage for the next 6 months getting ready for hunting season

I guess a guy could always tell the neighbors that rubbing up against the garage is just his way of marking his territory!

Beautiful F....but I would have to shoot it.

Not many, but here are two more, although one has a pad.

I'd Put It away. and Leave it alone, Fondle it once and while to look and clean.
