Lets see what you've been up to. Targets, field pics, dead critters. You know. All the good stuff you have been doing with your trusty 788. Thanks!

Only taken whitetails with this one, but she is wonderfully accurate. Bedded, floated and a crisp 2.5 lb trigger.

I have one sitting in my safe in 308 that's LNIB. I have been looking for a Redfield one piece scope base for it for a while. I wanted a 6mm Remington, but its like looking for a needle in a Haystack. I have been collecting parts, have a Redfield base for a LA 788, a stock I picked up from a 222 788 and a 22-250 clip. Would be willing to work a trade if someone has a need for these parts.

This is a 308 Winchester that I purchased when I was 15. It was my first rifle. My dad lightened the trigger, floated the barrel and bedded the action. I re-contoured the stock, added checkering and gave it a hand rubbed oil finish. I haven't hunted with it in 20 years. It shoots the 155 Scenars really well, so I'll see how it does at long range.

I love them. I grew up slaying coyotes with a 223 that was my Dad's. After his death, some family drama kept it, and the rest of his guns, from me.
A while back, I got the bug for a 788, and found a 308 on Gunbroker. Now, I have found a 243 at a local pawnshop I think I need. ....they are such neat rifles.

Do not know a thing about production costs; but Big R should consider redoing the 788 if they want a cheap rifle. It was miles better than all the chit rifles they have tried over the last decade. And that has nothing to do with the "steel and wood" crowds B.S.

I agree, this rifle was the Ruger American long before that gun was even thought of. Cheap, plain, and damned useful.

I let a 22/250 get away a year or so ago. Should have grabbed it up. Live and learn. I agree with TEXMAG. A 6mm would be sweet! Don't know if I have ever seen more than a couple. Maybe someday.

260 Rem. Cheapest custom I've ever stumbled upon. At the range working up loads (hence the T36!). It loves the 139 scenar. I have a 308 with a shorter LOP stock set up for the wife for deer/elk also.

I have a 6mm. Sadly I rarely hunt the thing and its been collecting dust for a while. It is in real need of a stock refinishing, but it appears the previous owner rarely shot the thing. It flat out flattens coyotes like a lightning bolt... You can see pieces of Wiley hanging in the brush behind him...

I bought one in .308 a year ago to use as a truck gun or when hiking around my property.
It has a cheap 4X on it now but will probably be getting a 6X Leupy.
I have not hand loaded for it yet but I think a 125-grain Nosler BT or a 125-grain Sierra would be a good place to start. It should shoot reasonably flat out to 200 yards, and maybe 250, and kill anything I'm likely to run into.
Keep your gun-hand ready and your eyes peeled.

My 788 has been sitting in the safe for many a year. Chambered for .223 Remington it was quite an accurate rifle. Some day, before I croak (because it will difficult to do from the grave) I'll send it out for a nice match barrel in .204 Ruger. The reason it's been delayed is there are so many projects popping up.
Remington's new inexpensive rifle is the 783, Indeed, I understand the '8' in the model designation is an allusion to the 788. The 783 is a better rifle all around except for the plastic stock (replacements are available from Boyd's). Equipped with a barrel nut (that fits the Savage nut wrench), barrel threads that match the Remington 700 and Savage small shank 110/10 barrels so that nuts are available (the barrels do not interchange between them), interchangeable bolt heads that allow cartridge family swaps (available from Pacific Tool & Gauge), and several sources of prefit high quality barrels. As parts and accessories become available it may well prove to be the new "have it your way" rifle. Still, the 788 is a classic that led the way.

I have a 788 in .22-250 that I've used on groundhogs for around 40 years. Back in the day, I installed a Canjar single-set trigger, which is about 2.5 lb without using the set feature. It still puts 3 ballistic tips in about 5/8" at 100 yards.

I just sold a short barrel .308 about a year ago and kept a .223 and a long barrel .308. I've had the .308 in a plastic stock for about 15 years now and when I went looking for the original I couldn't find it. Found a new walnut stock a couple of weeks ago in Shotgun News and bought it. Looks good but have yet to put it together. I might just hold on to it for awhile since the Butler Creek shoots way better than I can hold anyway. George

Anybody sporting pics of walnut 788s? I had a walnut stocked 30-30 that I refinished and later sold. But no pics. I also had a lefty 6mm that I sometimes wish I still had but there are two I really miss, a .223 and a 22-250, both were great rifles. I'm down to one now, a 7-08 carbine that's awfully handy.
