I know there are alot of folks on here that have Ruger No. 1 rifles. Would anyone happen to know the contour specs on a No. 1 AB? My dad is looking at rebarreling his 223, to a 300 BLK.

You'd be better off posting this in the single shot section

When I rebarreled a couple of these, I was surprised to learn they are all the same barrel profile, from 22 Hornet up through at least the 416's. They look like the big bores have heavier barrels, but they don't.
Edit - just to clarify, that's referring to the sporter barrels in different calibers, not the varmint models.

Sorry, having worked on No.1s, the bbl channel in the fore-arm from at least 375 H&H up is bigger than a 1B and a lot bigger than a IA.
Calipers will remove any doubt

Save money and headaches (assume you are talking about a 300 Blackout ? Just have it rebored. Suggest Norm Johnson at High Plains Reboring in ND. had a 300 H&H done to 400 H&H and a 25-06 to .411/40-82. Both would clover leaf 3 at 100.

Calipers will remove any doubt I hesitate to even reply to you, so I'll only do it this once. I did barrel and forend work on several No. 1's, calibers were 416 Rem Mag, 338 Win Mag, 30-06, 243, and 22 Hornet. All of them used the same barrel profile. For example, the 243 barrel fit the 416 forend perfectly. There were differences in forend shape and length, but the barrel channels in the forends were universal. To the OP - it sounds like you're asking if a 223 barrel is thick enough to rebore (or use the same profile) as a 30 cal - yes, you'll be fine.

Well you are just flat wrong. Among others I have a 1A in 7x57 and another 1H Tropical in 458. The 458 fore-end will mount on the 7x57 but you could toss a cat in the gap between the bbl and the wood. look at this: http://www.ruger.com/products/no1DE/specSheets/11391.htmland this: http://www.ruger.com/products/no1DE/specSheets/11390.htmland try and convince anyone these barrels are the same profile. Do you even own any No. 1s ? Get out your calipers and actually measure them. And yes, as I said, you can rebore a 223 to 30 Blackout. best, Larry

I spoke with mr Johnson a few weeks ago. his wait time is in years and he is no longer taking any work. the easiest way I found is to get a shilen or douglas #3 or #4 contour barrel and fit the Dakota quarter rib to the barrel

There are lots of reborers out there. Suggest you make a new post under the gunsmithing thread, ask for experiences w/reborers (quality, turn around, cost etc.)
By the time you get a new barrel, quarter rib, threaded, chambered, fitted and blued you be in the $400 range. Reboring is your best choice.
thanks, Larry

Try putting the .416 barrel in the .243 forend. Chuckle, he apparently has never tried that. When I upgraded my black pad 450/400 with a 1976 458 red pad 3X wood stock, I had to strip and match stain the 450/400 fore-end as the 458 Fore-end bbl chnl was too big. Imagine putting that on a 1A !

I did, just to make sure I wasn't seeing things wrong.
I did say "up to .416", since I haven't measured a .458 barrel.

Reboring would definitely be the way to go. Shouldn't be too big of a project actually.

Let's put this to bed once and for all. Shooter 46 deserves accurate information and Yonderling needs to be enlightened. My modest collection of No. 1s (I buy for the wood) Barrels were measured with digital caliper where the front of the fore-end meets the barrel. Shooter 46, good luck with your project. best, Larry

Whoa guys, I didn't claim to be an expert. Just posted my observation, about which I was apparently mistaken. Not the first time, won't be the last I'm sure.
Interesting that none of you chimed in to help the OP though, until you had a chance to tell someone they're wrong. You guys are a pretty angry bunch here.

He may have been using bull barrels (1-V) as his braise line??
