Few modern suggestions set in wartime, little different flavors.
Dark Blue World Gloomy Sunday
Was Downfall mentioned?
edit: there are a couple of good flicks set in finland or norway (but wasn't sweden) during ww2, can't put my finger on them this minute.

Noticed several have mentioned "Das Boot"
I've tried watching it several times and just can't make it through the whole movie without getting bored. Never understood why anyone thought it was great. JMO, though.
"Farewell to the King" staring Nick Nolte is a pretty good War Movie that has not been mentioned, yet.

The Batle of Britain, the one that used real planes not CGI. Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Laurence Oliver, and Susannah York are in it . Made in 1969, using real Spitfires and JU88's, ME 109's for the combat scenes.
The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

A couple of interesting Korean war movies, actually produced in South Korea, are "Brotherhood of war" and "The front line ". Of course, if subtitles aren't your thing, then give them a miss.

I think most of mine have already been mentioned:
Kelly's Heros Zulu Battle of Britain Hell is for Heros -- has that been mentioned? I love Bob Newhart's bit. The Iron Cross The Enemy Below
Some recent finds: Beneath Hill 60 -- Great WWI movie The Wipers Times

Put Full Metal Jacket in there and you have my list. Siege of Firebase Gloria is a favorite. A lot of good films mentioned. Some others I like: Breaker Morant The Red Baron The Horse Soldiers The Sands of Iwo Jima The Pacific The Enemy Below The Longest Day The Siege of Firebase Gloria Hamburger Hill Pork Chop Hill A Walk in the Sun Stalag 17 The Hunters The Blue Max The Great Escape Tobruk The Desert Rats
There are no problems that cannot be resolved by the suitable application of high explosive.
