And another for Das Boot and Full Metal Jacket. Platoon, The Deer Hunter and We Were Soldiers are good. No one mentioned Apocalypse Now? Apocalypse Now was more of a freak show than a war movie. The Air Cav scene was good, and of course Robert Duvall was outstanding. But I didn't care much for the rest of the movie. Maybe if I took drugs I would like it more. (and now everyone's saying "Whoa, Kevin's NOT on drugs????)

The Bridge Too Far is one of my all time favorites though. Great movie, lousy cast...really too bad they couldn't find any decent actors huh!! You just would have thought at least one big name would turn up in that movie.

Thankfully, dvd and Steelhead mentioned two of my favorites (The Dirty Dozen and Kelly's Heroes). The cast of those two is worth the watching alone.
There are some truly fantastic pics mentioned already.

Wasn't that the Movie based on Audey Murphy's WWII story staring him as well ? My two favorites are "Saving Private Ryan" and "Full Metal Jacket"

Surprised no one mentioned that one earlier. "Come with me and I'll show you where the Iron Crosses grow", or something like that. Lotsa good shoot'em up war movies from the 40's and 50's but they tend to be simplistic, I like a movie that tells a good story. Das Boot SPR Cross of Iron All Quiet on the Western Front Wings (more for the aerial photography than the silent screen acting) Platoon Full Metal Jacket - R. Lee Ermey's DI welcome speech is worth the price of admission alone. Red Badge of Courage Enemy at the Gates was good even if it bent history somewhat.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

Maybe there are some I missed seeing but I can't recall ever watching any war theme movie that had more combat action from beginning to end than Black Hawk Down does.

I really like several of the ones already listed, like Breaker Morant and The Great Escape; but let me try to mention some that no one else has:
Gettysburg (my absolute favorite war movie).
The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
