I remember this one hardtail. Guy had a clapped out, rock hard, grossly cupped Goodyear on the 21 inch springer front, no front brake, and a RACE, not sport, compound Metzeler on the back (ground square, flat and bald of course).
Of course, that was when I was running ME33 race compound up front and ME99 sport rear to balance the wear and induce a little oversteer on exit....
Just out of annoyance (not visible), I asked him, why the Metz?
"For traction off the line, man."
"Really good, huh?"
"Eleven second quarter, man."
This was a Knucklehead with the chain hanging like the Golden Gate cables.
"Wow, thanks! Have a good ride!"

He drag races, so he will need something V rated or better while he's on the strip to cope with heat.

For normal rating, I can't imagine that any Harley is going to stretch the limitations of an R rated tire. But when you drag race, the tire endures a LOT of heat.

The smart way to do it is a separate tire for drag racing, then go to a good touring compound R or S rated tire for all year round riding.

Agree on the second part but not the first as his bike isn't going to do or be capable of a John Force style burnout even in a water box which cleans the tire as well as warming it just slightly which cools fairly rapidly.

Ran this M/T 25.0 X 7.0-18 MT3222 slick on my bike and the pyrometer rarely pegged 270 degrees and was just warm to the touch almost instantly after a burnout.

Mark ....I don't ride Harley's but have had many bikes mostly triumph. Personally I don't really like the sticker type tires especially in the pacific NW. I found that they are not sticker unless warmed up and I just never rode hard enough to keep them hot. This was on a speed tripple. My bonnivlle is wearing bridgestones and have had no complaints. My tiger wears metszler and they have been the best all around tire I have tried. My son runs them on his legend also with no complaints.
The ones you mentioned I have no tried.. The only tire to ever let me down was Dunlop sport. Bought a 2 for one deal one winter and the first wore out really fast the other one blue out in western Montana..

I have bad experience with bikebandit, ordered tires and they never told me they are not in stock, waited 2 weeks for them.

Motorcycle Superstore is much better on tires, IMHO.

I put Shinkos 712 on my Honda before going from Northern Virginia to Barber museum - via Dragons tail - and back up using US81 in heavy and long rain.

Tires performed well on loaded motorcycle - I am over 250 pounds plus camping gear.

You really need to update your knowledge of what Harleys can do in the right hands.

I've never been a drag racer, did my racing on a road course. I never would imagine there would be so little heat. I just figured the burnout's got them white hot. When I get done with a lap on a road course, there's no touching the tires for a good 3-5 minutes. That's interesting.

Tiger and a Bonnie...NICE!
I've considered a Tiger 800 as a daily rider. Kind of a go anywhere, do anything kind of bike. But I'm concerned about the reliability. I'm used to riding Yamaha's and Kawasaki's, and no one beets the Japanese for reliability, but I'm wondering how reliable your Tiger is? That triple is a hell of an engine.

Good point...the other thing to watch out for with online bargains is the date of the tires, often they're at or past their expiration.

My son just ordered an 800 xcr tiger. Mine is a 955 with close to 60 k it's been from mexican border to alaska and many points in between....only chains and tires and oil changes..runs and drives like the day I got it.
Bonnie is the America model with all the goodies including big bore and 42 mm flat slides and some flow work on the head. It's pretty strong.....

That is helpful and usful information. Thanks! And that modified Bonneville sound like a really fun ride. If you ever ride it or the other this far over, please let me know ahead of time and I will gladly buy us some lunch or other. I was going to say go on a ride with you but I am not that good a rider in the twisties and such, yet. You and either of those Triumphs would have my lunch pretty quickly I am afraid!

That is a good reccomendation, for sure! I will enter your post and idea's into my thought proccess regarding these. Thank you.

It's still only a 1200 with some mods that are hardly in the "race bike realm".Your 1/4 mile expectations are overly optimistic and I gave you a simple streetable combination to put you in the nines @ 130+ but you continue to head off into left field.

You don't have to change the whole back end to go to a wider rear tire route unless it's a much larger tire.

Consider switching to a rear chain with offset sprockets and an outboard bearing supprt.

Denny, please do not assume that I do not hear or appreciate your real world, experience based input because I very much do. It is just that right now building a motor like the one you spelled out for me, and that I would love to do is not in the cards financially. This turbo idea is a VERY low dollar addition. Well under $1,000.00 even with the custom built headers and pipes and brass exhaust tip and all. And I did a bunch of trading to get this far.

When I next have some money to spend on the bike I will ask you more about the offset sprocket and bearing support idea.

The swingarm will not accept a wider tire, though. I am maxedout with the barely larger than stock tire I am running. Very little clearance on either side of the tire. This is why I thought I would have to change that out. I was told that it is not wise to try to widen a stock swingarm, but would be wiser and safer to just buy the wider swingarm, longer belt shaft etc. and go all out with the new rear kit. If you know different, I am all ears. I would love to go wider/fatter on the back tire. But I cannot and should not spend the money for too much in the way of mods including a new back rim.

I know that you would prefer to mentor someone who is really serious about the drag racing, but I will not be a player in the yearly points race because 1) if asphaltangel and I would rather go camping or ride into Montana and back on a race weekend that is what we will do and 2) points races go into Sunday on race weekends and we are faithful and loyal to attending church on Sunday mornings. We are not going to put racing or riding ahead of spending time with God and Gods people on the Lords day. We even have mad Worship time a priority when we are gone on longer out of town rides. Not making a judgement on anyone else here, that is just how we roll and so the points race is not for us. We just go on weekends that fit our other schedule, and preferences.

This bike will be a daily rider and fun ride first, and a drag racing bike a distant second. Maybe put it in some local car shows for kicks and grins.

All that said, thank you again so very much for the time you have spent with me on the phone, sending PM's and photos of your race days. Truly.

If I were to suddenly come into a bunch of money I would love to someday convert this bike into a real racer, and buy and ride a bone stock 110ci Fuel injected twincam Harley Super Glide as my daily runner and weekender bike. For now, it is a low budget fun bike that has to serve a couple of purposes and roles for me. Trying to make the most, for the leastest here. smile

Many of the bike shops where I used to live change quite a bit extra to mount and balance tires when a customer came in with a tire purchased online citing that they are not responsible for the age of the tire. It also removes their profit from the picture so cheaper in this case is not always better.

Both my bikes are in nebraska now....but my kids all live in gig harbor and will so day make a motorcycle trip out there. Especially since my son just put in an order fo a new 800 xcr...
I charged up the battery on the bonnivlle America today and went for a spin. It sure is fun..it made 82 hp at the rear wheel on the Dino. Quite a difference from the rated like 61 or somthing. I doubt it even did that and it was probbly crank HP
One of my fav roads is the rattlesnake. But i kinda outgrew the canyon carving and sold the speed tripple for the tiger. Just don't need to go that fast on the street...those elk will make a mess of a biker........

It sure is hard to go 55mph on the ride home when you've been tapping on 150mph all day.

Never done anything close to that, but I can sure imagine that 55 would seem like a crawl.

You are welcome here any time. Sherri and I have had the great pleasure of having several campfire members in our home including Ingwe, RJM, VAnimrod quite a bit and a good number of members in our deer or varmint hunting camps. We have a guest room and a 5th wheel camper that doubles as a spare guest house.

I or we will even go riding with you so long as you promise to leave me TOO far in the dust smile I have the HP, but not the experience to hang with the likes of you or Gun Geek or Brother Bart. Maybe I can learn a thing or two from you while we are out running around.

We should be back home from my transplant and ready to ride by mid May. Great time of year for the out of doors here.

Maybe we can ride the scooters over to the Enterprise Oregon area and blast the C$@& out of some rodentia there. I have scabbards for the bikes and extra varmint class rifles. Double the fun and here to Enterprise is a pretty and fun ride. PM incoming.
