Bugger was comparing his 6mm to his 25-06. I was responding to that. My Model 70 was 25-06 now it is a .270. If I ever wear that out it may become a 6.5-06. whelennut

I bought a Savage 111 .25-06 two weeks ago. Never had a .25-06 before but its super accurate with Hornady American Whitetail 117's and its a lot of fun at the range. I'm really starting to enjoy not getting beat up at the range.

Besides Savage, Tikkas also e a lot of left handed 25-06's. Both brands are good shooters.

the barrel length. .24". I usually reach for something with a shorter tube. Offhand, I don't recall ever seeing a rifle with a barrel shorter than a quarter inch...

I have a full length stocked 19 Inch barrel on my 25-06 it is plenty loud and belches fire. Any shorter would not be a good thing. whelennut

Why not? Because I can shoot a 120gr bullet out of my 7mm-08 @ 3,000+ fps, use less powder for every cartridge, enjoy the same or less recoil and also go with heavier bullets anytime I want.

And I can shoot 115-120gr bullets with better BCs to a higher velocity, any time I want. And for deer I don't need heavier bullets And I can shoot lighter bullets, still designed for deer at an even higher velocity. And I can shoot even lighter bullets at even higher velocity for varmints. And these discussions can go on forever.

The .25-06 is one of those rounds I really liked, but have moved away from over the years. At one time I tried everything I could lay my hands on. My father used to say I must belong to the "rifle of the month club" because I seemed to have a "new" rifle for every hunt. I learned a lot about rifles, cartridges and what worked in different situations.
However it got to the point where I had more guns than room to store them (I really don't like to "sell" any gun I obtain). I turned a bedroom into a gun room with rifle racks along every wall......and still ran out of room. I finally had to get rid of some rifles or buy a new house.
Decisions had to be made such as letting the .280 and 7mm Mag. go because they were too close in usefulness to my .30-06 and letting the .300 Savage go (except the Savage 99) because It was basically the same as my .308.
One of the "losers" was the .25-06. Not because I didn't like it. The .25-06 is GREAT for what I see as it's intended purpose....an open country, longish range round for smaller forms of big game (deer, pronghorn). At shorter ranges the .250-3000 and .257 Roberts will do just as well. For longer range shooting (which I do little of) the .270 shoots just as flat and is much preferred if the game is bigger than deer size.
Nothing wrong with the .25-06.....it just has a narrow "niche" (at least for me) that it fills very well.
I hate change, it's never for the better.... Grumpy Old Men The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know

I have an old 25-06 l, made by Iver Henriksen. It’s a Husqvarna action. I like it a lot.

But the real question is:did MD and Butch ever get the 700 to shoot?
I too have a Mauser 98 in 25-06.

I let a Sako 75 stainless synthetic 25/06 go to a buddy years ago and he has killed the crap out of things with it. He took it to the NRA range in New Mexico to check zero before an antelope hunt. He said once he started banging steel way out there people from all up and down the line wanted a turn. Said they all had a ball with it. I always regretted selling that one but it took me 2 decades to buy another. Love the 25-06 Kimber Select I bought on here last year.

My father in law had a 700 in 25-06, sold it for nothing.
Wish he had offered it to me first.
Buddy had one since the 70's, wouldn't shoot.
Brought it here, checked it out. No boresope but my peepers couldn't believe the barrel. Took several days of soak, scrub, soak.
Some 117 Sierra's 4350, and it was easy under 1".
P.S. The owner had never cleaned it.
Wouldn't mind owning one.

I have an old 25-06 l, made by Iver Henriksen. It’s a Husqvarna action. I like it a lot. That's a beautiful rifle! I am fortunate to own one of his custom rifles. He preferred Buhmiller barrels for his builds. He would order six or seven of Buhmiller's barrels in a particular caliber, find the one he liked the most, and ship the rest back to Buhmiller. Since Buhmiller made barrels for match rifles, you know you have a shooter! Ed

I sold this to DesertMuleDeer a few years ago. He was kind enough to sell it back to me. I lost my sanity for a bit.
