thinking of a new rifle chambered for a 284 cal. Thinking 7MM-08, 7X57 or the 284.
What would you build and why?

7mm08, great brass available and works fine in a short action.

7mm08, great brass available and works fine in a short action. This. I like the 7x57 in a Mex Mauser or similar, but the 7-08 just makes too much sense. It gives you the ballistics of the x57 in a SA with all best brass available. The .284 is "cool", but gives you little advantage over the 7-08 and lots less options for brass.

Your specifications for a "build" are too general.
For now just shop around and pick a 7mm rifle at a dealers that you like.

Your specifications for a "build" are too general. He didn't give any specifications. He asked a question about chamberings. If he's going to build a rifle, "a dealers that you like" probably can't help him.

7x57 in a Mauser intermediate or Montana 1999 SA (which is actually an intermediate), stick a 1:220 mm twist barrel on it (1:866 in), and you can do anything the 7-08 can do plus.
And Ingwe would be proud.

Depends on the action you have. Short action, 7/08 if only obviously.
The 7x57 belongs in the correct Mauser,as originally intended.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Another vote for 7mm-08. Had a 7x57 and have a 284 and 7mm-08. If I had to whittle it down to only one.....I'd keep the 7mm-08.

Since I have a bit of a 7MM-08 obsession, I guess I will vote 7MM-08:) In fact I have a new one on the way right now, can't wait!!

2.8 action length 7-08 mid length 3.1" 284.
If I were to build one having done the .284 Win thing would just stick with a 7-08.

Do the 7-08Improved. Same price, same brass, better velocity and still goes in a short action. 140gr bullet at 3050fps ain't chicken feed. To put it another way...the Improved version will shoot a 150gr bullet faster than the regular version can shoot a 140gr. powdr

7/08
If I wanted a NULA or had a Winchester S/A I'd maybe do a 284..I've always liked a that cart.

Go with the 7 SAUM. It's a 280 AI-Short.

Go with the 7 SAUM. It's a 280 AI-Short. Sound advice. Can't imagine building a .284 on a short action with the SAUM around. Though in most instances, the 7mm-08 (AI or not) would be better IMO. Never a 7x57. It was great 100 years ago, but there are significantly better choices today.......

thinking of a new rifle chambered for a 284 cal. Thinking 7MM-08, 7X57 or the 284.
What would you build and why? For myself, I would do a 7-08, but given your location, I would recommend the .280AI. It will run heavier bullets more suitable for the big critters you have up there at good velocities and can duplicate 7x57 loads by throttling back just a touch. The ballistics of the full-power loads I find listed are pretty impressive. The SAUM is just as good, but brass might get to be a problem. The AI will work just fine in a nice Mauser or M70 without any major action work.
What fresh Hell is this?

Long action 284 win. It will impress you and easy on barrels and powder. Easy to get 2900 fps with 160's and rl 17.

Guilty.
Got a 6 year old grandson I'm trying to turn as well. He likes "Grandpa was a Carpenter", even though I'm not.
