Roger, Many thanks for the post.. Wonderful and it is great you were able to pickup this fine piece of American craftsmanship...
Elmer was my favorite of all gun writers of all time.. He loved guns from birth, and was a shooter all his life.. He contributed much to all forms of shooting rifle, pistol and shotgun.. His like will not ever be encountered again.. As others said, I didn't always agree with what he said, but I realize why he felt the way he did.. Will look forward to more info. on the rifle.. Again many thanks for a fine post....

Just a heads up. I have a 1929 vintage Win 52. The pre A models sometimes will crack a piece when the safety is deployed. Rimfirecentral.com has a MDL 52 thread that has photos and a further explanation and description.

Thank you. It is one thing to purchase a historical piece, but when you find the owner and in this case a famous owner, talk in detail about the rifle and how he used it for sport and his thoughts,it is very special. I am well aware of the COD problem with pre-A's. I'm glad to say this rifle is without that problem. The weather is turning nice here and the next time I go shooting this rifle will be one I am anxious to shoot. Thanks!

...that had to be the bargain of the show... I have seen plain no history 52 targets go for more money.
Thanks for sharing...I had never seen that article before...

Don't shoot paper only! Kill stuff and Elmer will beam. Elmer was quite the "paper puncher" in his youth; an accomplished match shooter with the National Guard teams between the wars. I think he would appreciate his 52 being used to win a match just as much as he would appreciate it being used to take game.
