I think so too. I think the stock is a Brown.
Was thinking it would be a nice loaner if I had a handicapped visitor. But now I'm thinking it needs to leave my dwelling.

Errr... I think that is not a Remington. It looks like a Spyderco, or a cheap imitation, with the pocket clip installed improperly (upside down).

What happens if the elk step outside of timber?

As some have already said, it's most likely a model 700 KS (Kevlar stock ) mountain rifle. It was only chambered in 35 Whelan with that particular grey stock in 1989. So the barrel code should indicate it was made sometime in 1989
Its not a standard rifle - those particular rifles were made by the Remington Custom shop.

They are also simply chambering stamped on the barrel. No Remington Arms, Ilion, NY, etc

I just sold one in a 300Win Mag; it's a KS Mountain Rifle that came from the Custom Shop. It was an early version with a satin blue finish and jeweled bolt.
Mine, well now Alan's weighed right at 7lbs for the bare rifle. It was made in 1986 with a Brown Precision Stock.
Nice rifle.

Weight on mine with 3-9x40 Leupold is 7LB even.
