It probably shoots low due to the beercan shim. You'd shim the rear base up for more elevation. I'd pull the shim out and check and clean under both bases, then Loctite the base screws. Start from scratch and get it dailed in.

Waterrat, apologies to you. Just after I hit submit I thought it may have been a K bear dog considering where you live. The only one I have ever been around I wanted to steal it from the owner.

Ha! this is so true Phil. Waterrat is one tough dude for sure.

Phil, what is your bullet of choice in the 458 caliber? I have a 450NE that was regulated with the Hornady 480gr DGX, but I can get it to regulate with a variety of others, and it especially likes the 450gr TSXs and North Forks, and those I can drive faster ~ 2200 with good regulation.

For some reason it shoots 4 inches low at 25 yds at full elevation on the scope, and the front base has a pop can shim under it ( from the previous owner). I have happily used this scope for 15 yrs. with no problems. The bases are weaver and the rings are 4x4 weaver rings. Not sure what to do to fix this.
Erich

Remove the shim under the front base and this will elevate the muzzle. It is important to have the scope adjustments not wound out to their limits on a .458.

Don't shoot 500's off the bench, they are brutal. I can shoot a couple boxes of 350's in a range session, 500's at best I can shoot 10 rounds off the bench but they really should be shot standing.

To me the 500 gr over 2000 fps is a whole nother level of recoil beyond the 338-416 class of recoil.

Jorge, besides the ones you mentioned the 450 Swift is another great bullet for the 458

I am going to remove the shim (thanks for the help). And yes 500 grs. at 2100 from a bench is something I am going to limit myself. I though my 338 win mag with 250 gr. was rough. Now I will look forward to 338. Still like the rifle a lot, nice feel to it.

I shoot everything from Hornady 350 gr @ 2300fps (accuracy load) to 520gr "Government Bullets" intended for the Sharps @ 1850fps. The WW factory 500 & 510 gr ammo shoots OK, but not good as my handloads.

I love the caliber. Get a stock that fits you and you'll never be sorry you bought one.

I know you've done it before, but you need to post a pic of this rifle. She's a real beauty. FWIW, I thought the recoil was about right, and none too much for the payload.

didnt get close ups of it but someone grabbed a pic of me ringing steel with it
