I've noticed that the 6x42 has been upgraded to FX-3, some claim better optics etc. over the III models.

Is that upgrade happening anytime soon with the 6x36 ?

I have no intel on your immediate question (is there an upgraded FX2 6x36 in the wings?), but have several 6x36 scopes, two of which are FXIIs of recent manufacture. I have compared these to an FX3 6x42 that is also relatively new.

Bottom line is that I can see very little to no difference in these scopes, in terms of resolution, eye box flexibility and low light performance. Part of the latter may be due to my 60-year-old eyes. So I can't imagine any significant leap in quality should the 6x36 line be upgraded.

I also might add that I also have several older M8 6x36 scopes; these all compare favorably with the FXIIs (very little optical difference to my eyes).

Looking through various, at random of Leupolds from VX 3 back down the line to VX 1 and several Vari-XII 2-7 and Vari-X III from 1.5-5 and 3.5-10; I've yet to find one that would fail in 99% of conditions one would encounter in hunting situations. If the need to have the latest and bestest is what trips your trigger then go for it; but if you have an older Leupold that you've used for years I would suggest keep using it instead of searching for ultimate trivia.

Not about trivia, or upgrading an older model.

I just heard great things here about the FX-3 6x42 recently, and previously ( 5-10 years ago) had heard nothing but good reports about the 6x36 of that time.

I was considering a 6x36 for a sheep rifle with an LR Duplex reticle, when I noticed the generation difference.

Thanks for your Replys

Regards

I bought one about a month ago, it appears to be fine optically, haven't used it in low light so can't comment on that, it tracks correctly and is a nice scope.

Sam, does your new FX-II have coin slot or finger adjustments? My 2013 version is still coin slot but was hoping they had upgraded.

When I spring for the FX-II , they will immediately bring forth the upgrade to FX-2, with newer better glass, diamond scratch proof coatings, turret options, and all the other goodies.

Maybe even the DogZapper B&C reticle.

Since I ordered a 6X36 that is supposed to show up today, NOW they will upgrade the scope and lower the price!

(years ago I watched the price of diesel vs. gas for a year and gas was always 10 to 15 cents a gallon more than diesel. Then I bought a diesel pickup and within a month diesel was 30-40 cents a gallon more than gas. It stayed that way for over 10 years while I owned the truck then I sold the truck. Now diesel is 10 cents a gallon less than gas sick !)

Yup - never fails.

I went from driving a lifted Ranger that made 21mpg consistently to a 3/4 ton that never broke 15mpg.

Just at the same time that fuel cost spiked upwards dramatically

:-(

I can't tell the difference between an M8 and FX-3 so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

The 6X36 Leupold scope came today and now sits on my 7MM mag. It is my second 6x36 both have the LRD.

I needed a scope with more eye-relief than the one that was on it before - a Burris 2-7X35 with ballistic plex. I like the scope and it worked when shooting the rifle from the bench. Practicing shooting from field positions however, made it clear that more eye-relief was needed. A couple of light brushes to my nose got my attention!
