Hello all:

I do lots of stuff outside. One of the things I most enjoy is landscaping for wildlife.

So I am always on the lookout for wild fruits or nuts that I can plant on my own property. I am a patient person. I have no heartburn about planting acorns and crab apple seeds. The wildlife will benefit long after I am gone, regardless.

This year, I am particullarly interested in "soft" fruits like blackberries and wild grapes. I am looking for wild grapes that can take disease pressure (humidity) and will hang on the vine well. I am looking for blackberries that are late w/ canes that have good winter hardiness.

Of course, I am always interested in hearing about pecans from northern states like Iowa and anybody who knows about some fantastic black walnuts.

I live in mid-Michigan. A typical winter has a low of -5F. A test winter is -20F.

Have any persimmon trees out?

Ask OIKOS for a catalog? At least it will give you some ideas.

Have you considered plums? Filberts" Chestnuts" Hardy kiwis?

Yup!

I have apples, grapes, a few hazelnuts, oak, pears, persimmon....

I walked around the property this morning and took a few pictures. Most of these will be far more photogenic later in the season.
