Here's another thought. Advertisers are probably interested in total site activity. I read a lot of posts that I like but don't quote and respond to. Now if I click the like button, that shows as an engagement in site metrics. That might make this place more attractive to advertisers who make the site possible.
Watch for some participants to revive old sock accounts to provide themselves with likes.
