I'm in the process of booking a NF moose hunt with Mountain Top Outfitters for this fall . I don't know diddly squat about moose hunting even though I've been big game hunting for almost 40 years now. I obviously know the basics.....rifle, bullets, optics, etc that are necessary, but what about the rest of the gear? I live in the desert of West Texas, so know virtually nothing about hunting in wet, boggy climates. What do you experienced guys recommend? Thanks in advance.
Waterproof, knee high boots that you’ve logged some miles in, good rain gear, and a set of those portable boot dryers.

If you can find a pair of used sourdough slippers (I believe they were discontinued) or a similar product, they are indispensable in some moose habitat. Most especially if hiking dry land is required, but the moose are down in the swampy areas.

Dry land is not a thing in Newfoundland. The ground is a wet sponge.

Lacrosse 1,000 gram knee high rubber boots.

Does the outfitter provide a list?
Posted By: JGRaider Re: Moose Hunt Gear List - 02/23/20
I haven't asked him yet. I want the opinions of experienced hunters with specifics. I think that's much better than a generic list like "rain gear, rubber boots, socks, etc......."

Gotcha. Rubber hip boots aren't comfortable for all day ware if you're hiking around, or even laying around IME.
If this is a boat hunt, then the sourdough slippers may still be worth it when a guy gets out of the boat to stalk.

I suspect the outfitter can provide specifics if asked. At least that has been my experience in Alaska, BC and Alberta.
Posted By: NDHuntr Re: Moose Hunt Gear List - 02/23/20
I used Simms G3 waders with their Flyweight Vibram wading boot for my moose hunt on the Alaskan Peninsula last year. Was very happy with that choice. Not sure if conditions in Newfoundland are similar enough that these would be a good choice for you. With light enough base layers I thought hiking/stalking wasn't too bad. Synthetic base layers in lightweight and heavy weight to mix and match along with a Kuiu Peleton 240 full zip hoody and a puffy for warmth while sitting/spotting. Good rain coat for over everything for extra warmth/keep dry/block wind. I used HH Impertech.

Uncle Johnny, I like xtra tuff knee high rubbers, helly Hansen rain gear. Ask him if waders are gonna be needed, if they are lotsa good lightweight options. Have a great trip, looking forward to pics!!

I’ve never used anything different & have logged many, many miles in them. My feet have never gotten cold in them.

I'm pretty much old school I guess and still moose hunt in my Lacrosse hip boots. They're comfortable, I can hike in them all day and unless it turns off unseasonably warm they're not too warm for all day wear. I wouldn't want to climb mountains in them but for most moose hunting habitat they are well suited. Knee high rubber boots have never done it for me. I always seem to find more water than they will protect against.

If I can steal from and modify Whelen's famous quote, it would read, "when moose hunting, hips boots and a 30-06 are never a mistake."
Posted By: skitish Re: Moose Hunt Gear List - 02/23/20
I hunt moose in Saskatchewan and you will need a pair of fleece pants for the waders and possibly neoprene socks. Check what king of lubricant was used on the bolt of your rifle or better yet just go the a gunsmith and have your bolt disassembled and lubricated with something that will not jell in cold temp, saw this happen twice in five hunts. If boats are used for transport then you will need a face covering to fight the windchill. One of the comments above was to talk to your outfitter, this is very good advice. The outfitter we use and all his personnel are Cree and do not talk much until they get a feel for who you are, and our first moose hunt was a learning experience to say the least.

Helly Hansen Impertech jacket and Kuiu Yukon pants worked great for me in Alaska this year.

You are gonna have a great time!

Bring wool t shirts, the kuiu pants are great , thin wool beanie, Oregon research sombrero. Hunting in rain can play issue with scope fogging sometimes imo so make sure have a good scope.

Yep, and your hip flexors get a big workout hiking through boggy wet areas every day.

Lots of core, squats, lunges, bird dogs for lower back, lots of bike riding. I bring packets of emergen C ( 2 per day) to put in my water during the hunt and helps with cramps, soreness after long day of hiking and packing meat.

Boot dryer end of day and rubber boots get wet hiking in them all day. Sure guide has them in camp

Depending on season: potentially a gallon of DEET or full body coverage with a head net. .

Certainly. I wore a pair of Muck Wetlands boots over Darn Tough socks. I wore Sitka Cloudburst rain paints over the tops of the boots, with a set of Kenetrek gaiters over the pant bottoms to protect them from the underbrush and suffered no tears (in either rain paints nor neoprene uppers of the Mucks). I wore the Cloudburst jacket as an outer shell and was never wet. I would suggest a good set of liner gloves and overgloves. I wore the liners while hiking just as general protection from my hands from brush, but my hands didn't sweat. I put the overgloves on when we were glassing for warmth.

The small boot warmers (Peets, I believe) were indispensable for drying the moisture from perspiration from the boots in the evening while the generators were on.

John,
I bought these boots specifically for elk hunting in wet marshy fields where walking into mud, high grass land was required. I didn’t want rubber boots that had slippage on the heel with every step. These fit the order, but are a bitch to get on and off. Aside from that, wearing them has been perfect.

Lacrosse 4xAlpha hunting boots. 😎

I have been hunting Alaska and moose and caribou, bears, etc. for about 55 years. Some times it seems like no matter what you do or wear you end up wet, cold tired and miserable. My wife and me no longer hunt and live out of a back pack as hitting 70 takes the fun out of some of that.

Long ago I settled on Helley Hansen Impertech rain Parka and Bibs. They are a bit stretchy, quiet and can be rolled up smaller then most quality rain gear and with the bibs one does not have to fight pulling pants up. I also do not like tight rain gear, as I want to vent moisture if possible. Depending on what I attach to my belt I often wear suspenders when hunting. So for me about the only thing I want on my belt is my favorite knife and a 5 round ammo slide.

I like Gortex, but I don't trust it or any other super fabric to keep me dry in a day after day down pour. I have a set of Cabelas MT50 Gortex Parka and Bibs, but generally if it is a serious rain I put the Impertech on. A down vest is nice as I usually use the layer system and don't pack a real heavy insulated coat on fall moose hunts. Hoods are nice on coats and synthetic hoodies. I like wool shirts and Smart Wool is about my favorite for all garments and socks. Bring a good itch free neck gator, what a difference they make for retaining heat as does a good fitting wool or synthetic stocking hat.

All though I have a favorite knife, a Bushfinger by Fiddleback Forge made with premium CPMS 35 V steel I bring a Havalon knife and several of the disposable blades. They are super good little blades and I used them on last years moose.

I used to always store a spare neck gator, watch cap and socks in my sleeping bag and they really add to warmth when sleeping in a tent. A good Gortex or ball cap is nice. Make sure you have a good bug net head cover and bug dope. Start thinking about a personal first aid kit. I carry a tourniquet and the blood clotting stuff in what ever pack I have on, as well as mole skin. A lot of this depends on where one is staying each night and mode of transportation. Argo, canoe, ATV, hind legs, etc.

Boots are a crap shoot and what works for one person is hated by another. For sure high water proof boots are in order and I have logged many a mile in hip boots, don't like them but I stayed dry. If you can get by with knee high Bogs or similar styles that should work. Just put some miles on them before the hunt. Bring some rubber bottomed camp slippers. CHAP STICK, FLUSHABLE WIPES, nuff said.

Moose don't usually fall over unless structure is hit. I have never had one go far with a good lung shot from my 30-06 or .338 Winny. Most of my moose have been taken under 100 yards. I am a Barnes TTSX fan since the 80's, before that it was Nosler Partitions. Now days there is no end to good bullets. We went from a sat phone to a Garmin In Reach as it runs off of satellites. We still have cell problems where we hunt and the older we get the more important quick communication becomes.

Have fun and kill a big one! Please let us know how it goes. Big black bear in Newfoundland !

Posted By: buffybr Re: Moose Hunt Gear List - 02/23/20
I hunted moose in Newfoundland last year. I think it rained every day, with 3.5" falling one day. The issue was more of keeping dry than keeping warm.

Those Lacrosse boots pictured above look good. I wore Muck boots. I took one of my homemade wood boot jacks to make getting the boots off easier. We walked 1-4 miles every day out in the bogs. Its a lot like walking in the tundra in Alaska.

Rain gear should be "waterproof", not just "water resistant." A wide brim waterproof hat would be beneficial. I also took a collapsible camo umbrella that was nice when we were sitting and glassing bogs.

The rifle that I took was my stainless steel, plastic stocked Rem 7 mm Rem mag. I taped the muzzle every day, and dried and oiled the rifle and bore every night. One of the other hunters in camp shot a cow moose one day, and while I was talking to him the next day I could see rust in the bore of the muzzle of his rifle.

I don't think Newfies know what sun screen is.

Strong back is only half the battle. Your abs actually are doing more than your back is. Strong ab's usually go hand in hand with a strong lower back. Muscle imbalance leads to fatigue and injury. Train your whole body for optimal performance.

JG,

Some of the gear that worked for me on a Newfoundland moose hunt.

Cabela's MT050 Quiet Pack Rain Jacket and pants.

Cabela's Passage Primaloft jacket with Windshear

LaCrosse Alpha Burly Pro 18" rubber boots

LaCrosse Big Chief hip boot

Cabela's Rimrock hikers (Gore-Tex) Did not think I would use them much because of the boggy terrain, but surprisingly we did a lot of walking on higher rocky ground. I carried them in pack until I needed them.

Mid weight Merino wool crew midweight hiking socks from REI

Smartwool medium crew socks purchased at Duluth Trading Co.

Polypropylene light weight base layer (whatever was on sale) I took three sets.

Wrangler camo double knee five pocket jeans. (whatever was on sale @ Farm and Fleet or Fleet Farm)

Guide Gear button down hunting shirts 60/40 blend purchased at Sportsman Guide.

Gates Gore-Tex hunting non-insulated gloves purchased at Sportsman Guide (two pair, one regular fit, one larger for colder weather to insert Fox River wool fingerless gloves (REI) or Hunter's Select 100% polyester fleece gloves (Walmart).

My lucky L.L. Bean buffalo plaid wool shirt.

Go get'em JG.

All good advise. What my son and I didn't plan on needing was sunscreen and tee-shirts. The week before we arrived was cold and snowing. Everyone in camp got a moose. Our week was in the '70's and sunny with a "super moon" at night and not a single moose sighting for anyone all week.

Bring two pairs of boots in case you tear a pair.

Not likely but no Cabela's in NF!
Posted By: abbydog Re: Moose Hunt Gear List - 02/25/20
Bring two pairs of boots in case you tear one, no Cabela’s in NF.

I’m going back this year and I’m adding a few items.
1. Down underwear top that you can pack and wear if it’s windy and damp.
2. Wool shirt..

I always packed my rain gear, extra socks and lightweight pants and top in my pack. Several times I face planted in the bog and was wet from elbows to wrist and knees.
Posted By: Tejano Re: Moose Hunt Gear List - 02/25/20
In Alaska the ankle fit hip boots, usually LaCrosse, and the long HH Impertech coat were almost a uniform. Now I would go with Gore Tex Hip boots and a more conventional hiking/hunting boot that could take being wet.

Go with mostly wool and synthetics. If you get down items get the Hydro Tech treated ones that repel moisture. A vest and/or a light down sweater are nice if you stop to glass. Treat yourself to some Alpaca socks, I just get crew socks and use them for liners, Dahlgren has a good hiking model. These are 2-3 times warmer than wool and wick and dry faster. You can put a fresh pair over wet feet and they are warm again in minutes. I would double up on rain gear with a light two layer gore tex jacket and then the HH Impertech for heavy rain. The gore tex for wet brush, or if you take a spill, or are in a boat.

Sorry Johnny..I haven't hunted moose either, nor have I hunted NF. Hunted in Alaska though....used some of the same stuff. GOOD raingear is your friend and yeah, knee high waterproof boots....

Order a pair of insulated non steeltoe xtratuf boots. They will become your new favorite boot anytime its wet. Very comfortable. A good shell like sitka and a fleece base layer. A small pack that stays tight to your back. Rope and game bags. A small sharp knife and a couple razor blades. A small bone saw or hatchet. I sometime bring a cheap wire and loop saw because the come in really handy seperating joints and weigh about 10 grams. Use the rope to rig up the quarters to carry them. I would even consider ditching the optics. The guide will have them and know what a legal bull is. I always carry cotton balls with some Vaseline rolled up tight in a ziplock for fire starter. An extra pair of socks. A really small tarp like 5x6'. I like neoprene gloves. I know it sounds like alot but its really not. Pack as LIGHT as possible. Ive carried countless quarters and cursed myself for being 10 pounds overweight. I never carry a pack frame because they are so bulky. I'm always jumping across creeks and weaving through alders. Light and tight.
Good luck

Subtract 20-30 degrees from that to get them on their feet to feed. Warm weather is your mortal enemy. You can always put on more/different clothing to stay warm, but, warm weather will have Moose lazing the day away somewhere you can't see/find them. 65 degrees humping bogs in knee-boots/hippers and rain gear will make you miserably sweaty and hot. 35-45 degrees and you'll be able to pace yourself for warmth and not get soaked from the inside-out by your own sweat.

I moose hunt up in the NW corner of Saskatchewan, very different terrain than Newfoundland. Sounds like really good advice being given here. But unless your guide is going to skin out, and cut up, your moose, you'll need a lot of knife! Lots of moose hair, and thick skin, dull a blade really fast. I've started using the Outdoor Edge 3.5" Razorlite EDC. I like the size and I like that a new sharp edge is only a quick swap away. No more carrying a stone and taking the time to hone. I do have a small plastic container to take my old blades out with me and am going to try to sharpen them at home, just to see.. So far, one moose with this and it's growing on me, I like always having a good edge fast. And when I get back home, a trip through the dishwasher and it's nice and clean. And it works great for deer too!

In my vast experience of 2 moose (grin). An Ingram Lite Hunter set in S30V will get a moose skinned and quartered without the need for any sharpening. We did have a small Gerber folding saw to get the bottom of the legs off. Everything else we did with the 2 knives taking care not to get to hard into any of the bones.

Your individual results may vary! LOL! I still tend to be a little heavy handed when wielding a blade.

I have had good luck sharpening the so called disposable blades. Best thing is to replace them before they are really dinged up. If you can see flat spots with bright light and reading glasses then they need to be stoned, use a hard stone to see how it works. If you start with a soft or coarse stone you will be starting over increasing the difficulty. Any of the hard stones over 2,000 grit should work and 10,000 is not too fine if it is only a touch up.

If you catch them before major edge damage then just stropping can be enough to re-align the blade and bring back a scalpel type edge. I had lots of practice sharpening inserts for broad heads, lost a lot of blood on the learning curve.

Here is enough to get your started, they have many similar recommendations which helps. Also almost all recommend knee high boots instead of hip boots like in Alaska, this is good they are easier to walk in.

Absolutely. I don't want anything to do with Moose hunting in warm weather. I like it to be in the 20's.
Posted By: JustinL1 Re: Moose Hunt Gear List - 02/27/20
I used rubber boots that I got from Gander Mountain on my Newfoundland moose hunt, as long as their comfortable (for you, not what feels good for anyone else) you should be fine. I hunted pretty much everyday in rain pants, I took a heavy Cabelas coat for early in the morning when it was cold, but usually either just put it in my pack and exchanged it for a light rain coat or just wore whatever sweat shirt I had on. One day it got cold enough to put some Cabela’s thermals on underneath (the high was in the low 20’s with 25 mph winds all day), but other than that, I was comfortable the entire trip like I just described.

However, I don’t get too cold- I was hunting with a guy from GA and the poor guy wore every ounce of clothing he brought with him. It was 85 in Atlanta when he left the airport and he just wasn’t accustomed to cold weather, so your mileage may vary. Don’t be afraid to pack some heavier clothing than what’s been suggested, I’m just saying because I felt bad for the fellow from GA, but he was a trooper and ended up killing a great bull on the last day.

As much as I love my Xtratuf's for any real walking forget it. Order a pair of La Chameau's, they are pricey but worth every penny. A 100% better walking boot.
Posted By: noKnees Re: Moose Hunt Gear List - 02/27/20
I was thinking of bringing breathable stocking foot waders and light hiking boots as back up to my rubber boots. I figured they would offer higher protection and might even walk better than the rubber boots.

Any one try something like this? I really have no experience with hip waders. I see some folks roll the hip waders down to the knees when walking on hard ground.

The only unsuccessful moose hunt I have been on was on a week where it was unseasonably warm, give me the cool/cold any time. I will second that 35-45 as perfect temp. cool enough you can walk, not so cold you suffer.

Newfoundland varies a lot - You may be in some boggy areas as we were last time, but the last time and the time before we spent a lot of time climbing rocky hills. It's a bit different than where I've seen moose in Alaska. I felt no need for hip boots in either hunt and the Cabelas rubber bottomed neoprene top boots worked great. I tried several brands before I bought these as they all seem to fit a little different. I suspect they're all fine, just buy whatever fits as there's a bit of walking to do. I went with uninsulated and they're fine. Just add socks.

Pants-wise I've been wearing these for several years and been really happy with them - https://www.firstlite.com/products/obsidian-merino-pants Warm but breathable and if they get wet dry quickly.

Jacket-wise I went with a Bass Pro camo shell - ( this one is similar https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/frogg-toggs-toadrage-rain-jacket-for-men) and with some medium weight poly under it was fine.

Gloves - have an extra pair in your pack - they will get wet. I wore a waterproof pair when raining and an old pair of Nomex flight gloves when walking or dry (they make great hunting gloves)

I'm wondering if a guy could wear waterproof hunting boots and gaiters instead of knee high rubber boots? I've never worn gaiters either, BTW. If I go the rubber boot way, I can find nothing bad about the LaCross Alphaburley 800g boot ?

I replaced some extra tuffs with lacrosse and been happy with them. Just as comfortable and slightly taller by a couple inches. Usually put some felt insoles in them and the neoprene lined ones are good to 10 below for me. Just checked and i have the burly, so cant speak for the alpha burley. I did manage to tear off both of the little straps on top. Still dont leak!

The LaCross Burley 600's are what we use. A little warm for our NF hunt, but work well here in PA most winters.
They were easily high enough for the places we walked around in NF.

Yeah when I recommended 1,000 gram boots I wasn't thinking that NF is an earlier season than I'm used to. I usually hunt them late October. 600 grams would be fine.

One item that is not very important, is whatever knife you take along. The Newfie guides take it as a point of pride in performing all that sort of work, and so far, the guides I hunted with, were really good at it.

In AB after pics I dig out my knives and tell the guide to grab a leg. He says he'll gut the moose. I told him I've gutted LOTS of deer and better than a dozen elk, no big deal. He then very pointedly told me that was part of his job that I'd paid for. So I stepped off, grabbed a leg and let him go to work. Took about 30Sec of watching until I request he use my knife as his wasn't as sharp as I like mine to be. He obliged and all went well.

His probably started out sharp. I have to sharpen my knife in the middle of field dressing a Moose. They start dulling a blade quick.

No experience moose hunting, I hunt a lot of Adirondack swamps I hate muck boots I bought them think they would be the ticket for the swamps the durability sucks on them. These boots here are catching on fast in my area. I guess the two guys that created muck had a falling out one guy left and started his own company. these boots are warmer, have better ankle support and in my opinion warmer. They have a rubberized coating 3/4 of the way up the boot for added protection and waterproofing. [Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]

I like this combination better. I use either Jungle boots or hiker style wading boots like Danners. A lot of hippers have over sized neoprene booties so look around for a more fitted pair.

I have used gore-tex snake boots as an alternative to rubber boots. If I treat the outside with Obenauf wax they usually stay waterproof for at least a full day. But bring these as a back up to rubber boots in case it doesn't work out. Also the vapor liners and seal skins socks make it so it isn't too bad if they leak some. Just test them thoroughly before bringing them. Bring boot dryers too if not too limited on weight.
Posted By: fishdog52 Re: Moose Hunt Gear List - 02/28/20
The handy little hand warmers that react with the air after you open them can also be pretty overnight good boot dryers. The only trick is to carefully cut the top off the packet, leaving the hand warmer inside. The packaging keeps the hand warmer from getting wet, while providing access to enough air for it to work.
ON wilderness trips, and particularly fly ins, where space and weight can be tight, you can always find room for a few of these.

It would at least be a test for how "waterproof" tbey would be. They won't be waterproof enough on a moose hunt.

For short bits of water higher than xtratuffs, you can duck tape rainpants to the boots. I've used small bunnies on the rainpants to keep water out of boots for creek crossings.

Findd out what your outfitter reco's depending on expected terrain. Then ask detailed questions here.

Good idea. My moose hunting experience doesn't include NF, so it's hard to make recommendations given that the terrain and weather conditions may be very different from what I'm used to. Best to contact the outfitter for gear recommendations and then come back for feedback.

My guide carried two knives, a knife sharpener, an axe to cut brush and split the moose, a jet boil, a little pot, two cups for afternoon tea with our lunch.
His knives had at least 6-7 inch blades, nothing fancy but he cut through the moose in 60 - 90 minutes, gutted, quartered and loaded it on his 6 wheel ATV FOR the hour ride to the boat.
Alpha burly uninsulated boots, two pair, one pair of mine were insulated.
A FRANKENSTUD is a must, just had my brother in law order one for our upcoming hunt.
I gave mine to my guide and ordered a replacement.
Best rain gear you can buy was the advice I got.
In my pack I had KUIU rain pants, extra pair of socks, 2 24 Oz water bottles, lunch, snacks.
I wore my SWAZI RAIN JACKET as my everyday jacket. Next trip I’m bringing a wool shirt and KUIU DOWN PACKABLE super down top and bottom in case it gets cold early morning and evening sitting. The wind kicks up and you feel it.
MOST IMPORTANTLY. Actually top of the list.
1. Hire a personal trainer.
2. Work your quads, hamstrings and groin muscles. Start stretching those muscles now!
3. Start hiking with poles twice per week on ground that certainly is not flat.
4. Build endurance.
5. Ask the trainer to work you with compound excercises.

At the end of the first day those above mentioned muscles hurt so bad I thought I was done for the week. I was also battling planters facetious for the previous 9 months and it continued for the rest of the year. Not fun, I was in agony.

I got similar advice on the fire. I didn’t hire a trainer, big big mistake.
I hired one after I got back January 2019 and my final step is to loose a bit more weight for our October hunt.
I’m 68 this year and I expect I’ll be pretty fit, i don’t jog a mile, don’t have to just build yourself up slowly.

As already mentioned, a good pair of knee high rubber boots with a good sole is Paramount. Gortex rain gear and a good backpack like a Badlands 2200 are essential. You want to dress in layers. I had a Havalon knife which I gave to my guide. Bring a couple of them with extra blades to give to the guides and they will really appreciate it!
Both my wife and I hunted, she took her bull on high ground after a 1.5 Mile hike the first day at 262 yards.
I shot my bull the second day on high ground after walking 2.5 miles through some of the most rugged country I've ever been in. Awesome hunt!

GUIDES like money it pays their bills! If you are going to give them a gift at least make it something worth while. Or maybe you just didn't like your guide?

I booked a trophy hunt for my wife and I. Remote valley that is only accessable by heliçhopter. Not a cheap hunt!
I shot a monster bull moose and the outfitter used a picture for the cover of his brochure. The outfitter, guide and staff were all tipped very well! In fact, we have been invited to go up in June Lobster fishing.
Good luck on your hunt, your going to need it.

Hmm I asked for advice? Are you sure? Anyways I guess if the truth hurts, you might want to fix your issues. The Badlands is a definite PASS! But I suppose if that is all you know one could think they were onto something.

Helly Hansen Impertech Rain Gear.
https://www.alaskaoutdoorssupersite.com/clothing/impertech-raingear

Helly Hansen undergarnment to wick away moisture
https://www.hellyhansen.com/en_no/hh-lifa-active-solen-ls-49348

Fleece pants, vest, Sweater as a medium layer - in pack pack, when walking. On while sitting.

This combination served me well years ago guiding in AK. Think onion. Base layer always on ;-) outer shell against the ever present rain and to sit and kneel in wet conditions.

Hands, Feet and Head must be kept dry and warm and the rest will be OK.

Outdoor Research Beanie and Gloves for that.

Muck Boots for the feetes.

This stuff works - as will other good brands, but as you asked specifics, hope this helps.

Stay comfy and have a great hunt. Weidmannsheil !

Thanks for the help, but I'd really appreciate specifics/brands, etc.

Lacrosse 1,000 gram knee high rubber boots.

That's an awful lot of insulation for a fall hunt. Is it really required? I understand the rubber boots, just not a 1000 grams of insulation.

I read further along and saw that you had ammended your recommendation downwards.
