I was just reading an article about China and in it the author said “We know that China is an authoritarian country ruled by the Communist Party and rejects liberal democratic values of free speech, rule of law and democracy“ and it got me thinking about the terms we use to describe ourselves and others politically, I’m an Australian and to me America is a country that was founded on very liberal ideas like the right to free speech, freedom of religion etc, and in recognition of this there are safeguards built in to your constitution to protect these rights and freedoms and limit interference by the government and others who might seek to curtail them, the second amendment for example, who are the real liberals? antifa call themselves liberals but they are promoting an ideology that is anything but liberal ie socialism, no socialist regime would ever allow these rights and freedoms and history proves it, the funny thing is no socialist regime in history would have given them the freedom to run around burning things and having tantrums either, Stalin would have sent them to the salt mines or just had them shot. Liberty and liberal both come from the latin word liber, meaning free, in his book “On Liberty” printed 1859 Stuart Mills defined liberty - people are and should be free to do whatever they like up to the point at which it keeps others from doing as they like, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of that sentiment displayed by the current crop of so called liberals.

A liberal in the classical John Locke sense was someone along the lines of America’s founders and all about limited government and maximum individual freedom. Look at any communist or socialist country and you'll see that there is always a class of super rich and then a peasant class. A free, capitalistic system gives rise to a large middle class and that's where the power resides, as the scale slides towards totalitarianism more and more power resides in an oligarchy. The oligarchy can go by different names whether it be politburo, nobility, priesthood (ancient cultures), etc. They're the powers behind the throne as they say, they support and enable the rulers in exchange for favors and wealth. Communists don't want everybody the same, they want 99% to be the same (poor) while the 1% who rule are fabulously wealthy.

The super rich enable commies because they benefit from it in a symbiotic relationship. They get richer when they're the ones backing the rulers, it's good to be a "friend" of the King. The ones that get hammered by socialist/communist policies are the middle class, they can't be allowed to prosper because a prosperous middle class citizen thinks for himself and is hard to control. "Tax the rich" is the common slogan of democrats but what they really mean is tax the middle and upper middle class, not the truly rich. The Bill Gates, George Soros, Jeff Bezos types are engrained enough in the ruling class that no taxation scheme is really going to affect them, they have enough politicians in their pockets to ensure the laws are written for them. A professional couple making $400,000 a year is going to get fleeced by democrats though. Many people will call them rich but that's not rich, that's just upper middle class and they don't have the clout to avoid being fleeced.

The truly rich want socialism/communism because they get richer and more powerful under it.

At some time in the past, "liberal" meant believing that a person should be allowed to go his own way, make his own choices, and accept what those choices led to. Nobody had the right to control anyone else. Nobody had the right to punish others for the decisions they made. What was yours was yours to use as you saw fit.

But today, our so-called liberals take every opportunity to control every aspect of everyone else's lives. Every choice others might make are prohibited or made mandatory. Nobody can be held responsible for what they do - except for those who oppose the "liberals." Everything imaginable is taxed, restricted, redefined, or abolished.

There is virtually nothing liberal in being today's liberal.
