Sorry to hear that. R.I.P, Eddie. Although I would bet that the "years of heavy smoking" caused it vs. a metal guitar pick held in the mouth. I've known too many heavy smokers that have died from cancer to believe otherwise. Most of the heavy smokers I've known have died from some form of cancer or else emphysema.

throat cancer comes more from drinking then smoking
I pretty much never listened to musicians less than 10 years my senior, so van halen was just one of those new/modern musicians I dismissed, since he had no bearing on my love life.
Saw him a couple of times. Wow. Didn't someone once say no one could overplay the guitar in a song like EVH. Interestingly enough he started on drums with Alex on guitar before the switch. RIP, Edward. One of the greats.
Same chit kilt my brother Nov1 2014. Ben was only 64. Growing up here in So Cal I must have seen Van Halen preform a dozen times they played my High School in 1974 before they made it big . Seen them play Gazzarri's in Holywood a couple times. Battle of the bands at the Orange County fairgrounds, concerts. Local boys, grew up in Pasadena So Cal. The story is their father who was also Musician gave Eddy the drums and Alex the Guitar... Good thing they switched. Eddy Van Halen was the greatest guitarist there ever was or ever going to be. I play and I would have given my left nut to be able to shred like that... RIP Eddy.
Watch this interview of Eddie and his early life coming to the US on a boat. Adds another dimension to his story that makes me respect him even more as a person not just a human. His work ethic as a kid would go a long way today...
Saw them in 82 and their last tour. They werenโt the same when I last saw them but I got the opportunity and now thankful. Also check out their early demos on YouTube in their rare form.
I got that smoking baby cassette in my attic stash. Had it since 7th or 8th grade. Ran across that last few months. Mixed in with my NWA n IGGASZ4LIFE and Too Short Born to Mack and Quiet Riot ๐๐คช

HPV is the root of many oral and throat cancers. It should make some of you worry about some of that snatch you munched on in your wild days. Not really joking about that either.

Thanks for putting up the videos guys. Bringing back memories of growing up wild in So Cal in the 1970's The drugs, the chicks, the Rock and Roll the fast cars. I had a blast RIP Eddy...
Diamond Dave totally โborrowedโ Jim โDandyโ Mangrumโs stage strut! BOA, the fathers of Southern rock with the original 3 axe attack, before Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Allman Brothers.

Not a musician so I don't know much about it, but the story behind that famous guitar is pretty fascinating. Musicians have studied and dissected that guitar for years. There are tons of web pages and videos devoted to it.
When young and broke, apparently Van Halen couldn't find a guitar with the features he wanted, and he couldn't afford to buy effects pedals, so, not knowing anything about electronics, he cobbled that guitar together out of mismatched parts, literally forcing stuff together and chiseling chunks out of the guitar body when he had to, to get the sound he wanted.
The pieces themselves were cheap: the Fender wood parts were cheap knotty seconds, the Gibson internals were mostly salvaged from old guitars. It was pieced together as crudely as possible over the course of a couple of evenings in his parents' garage.
Van Halen changed modern music forever, with a guitar Bubba'ed together out of cheap junk. Shows what a talented genius he was. RIP
