Not a musician so I don't know much about it, but the story behind that famous guitar is pretty fascinating. Musicians have studied and dissected that guitar for years. There are tons of web pages and videos devoted to it.
When young and broke, apparently Van Halen couldn't find a guitar with the features he wanted, and he couldn't afford to buy effects pedals, so, not knowing anything about electronics, he cobbled that guitar together out of mismatched parts, literally forcing stuff together and chiseling chunks out of the guitar body when he had to, to get the sound he wanted.
The pieces themselves were cheap: the Fender wood parts were cheap knotty seconds, the Gibson internals were mostly salvaged from old guitars. It was pieced together as crudely as possible over the course of a couple of evenings in his parents' garage.
Van Halen changed modern music forever, with a guitar Bubba'ed together out of cheap junk. Shows what a talented genius he was. RIP
