Sorry to hear that. R.I.P, Eddie. Although I would bet that the "years of heavy smoking" caused it vs. a metal guitar pick held in the mouth. I've known too many heavy smokers that have died from cancer to believe otherwise. Most of the heavy smokers I've known have died from some form of cancer or else emphysema.
