I haven't commented much on the current gun and ammunition shortage, mainly because I'm stocked up and haven't been paying much attention. Yesterday, I had occasion to go into a local Walmart that I don't frequent much anymore. I went by sporting goods and decided to check up on the situation. Plenty of shotgun shells if you want 12 or 20. Not completely full shelves, but plenty. Didn't check specific loads. Some 28 Gauge. NO .410. Only ammo was a couple of boxes of some big game round that I couldn't make out the caliber of and a box of 7mm Rem. Mag. NOTHING else. No .22. Nothing.

Gun shelves were empty. Dunno if this means Walmart is no longer selling firearms or if they were just out. There were places for a lot of guns along with prices, but they were devoid of merch. There were a bunch of inline muzzleloaders. Those were the only guns there.

Corresponded with another poster on here about it and decided to run to the localest farm store. These guys have just recently started carrying firearms. They have a nice selection. Better than Walmart, since they carry pistols too. I was in there about a month ago and checked it out. They were well stocked then. Not as well stocked last night but much better than Walmart. If you wanted a shotgun, you could pick from several different brands and models. One, I couldn't see what, maybe a Maverick, was a pump with plastic stocks...$199. They had plenty of Heritage Rough Rider .22's...serviceable. Had a Ruger Single Six, couple of SP101's...one or two Citadel 45 autos, some Taurus 9mm's. Plenty of deer rifles and 22 long guns. You could arm yourself if you had just dropped down from outer space and were concerned about Biden and ANTIFA.

Ammo was more problematic. Again...plenty of shotgun shells. Some .22's but no bulk that I could see. Just smallish 100 and 50 rd. boxes. No 9mm or 45 ACP. Some deer rifle calibers. 44 Spec. and 10 mm. 500 Mag. Maybe was some 38 Spec.

Makes me wonder why Ruger and Smith& Wesson are down about 10% for the month. Looks like high demand would drive the stock price up.

VA background check approval number was A520xxx on Thanksgiving morning. This evening it was A522xxx.

In other words, 20k approvals in 8 days, or 2,500 approvals a day. Some number of those are multiple sales.

The fastest way to get Americans to do something is to tell them they can't do it.

An hour or so East of Ethan and all the Walmart’s have guns, assuming you want the low end typical Savage and various Turkish stuff they only carry around here. Was out in western Kansas a few weeks ago and they actually had some walnut, 700 BDLs and Rugers. Shells are shotgun only. Plus some .350 Legend.

Academy has been empty other than steel. Couldn’t but a lead she’ll with a shot size bigger than 8s a few weeks ago. Not that I needed any.

Local farm store (Atwood’s) had quite a decent selection of entry level long guns and a decent selection of polymer pistols. Their ammo was 12 and 20 gauge, 8s only. A few weeks ago they had Golden Pheasant 5s.

Dunham’s had quite a mix of guns. Shotgun ammo. No rifle except .350 Legend. Maybe I’ll build one? .41 Magnum pistol ammo was their selection.

Friend of a friend has a hardware/gun store. Saw today he had CCI small pistol primers. $150/1000. Gouging? Yeah. Or keeping some on the shelf for somebody that really needs it? Whatever.

A month ago he told me he ordered $40k of ammo. The ETA of the order was 1 year.

The same disappointing empty shelves here in the land of Enchantment.

Sportsman's Warehouse had an online ad, so I looked in on it, specifically for "Guns and Ammo". About 3 pages of guns pictured, with three hits for 12 ga shotgun shells. Then I noticed that a filter was available, showing only the stuff in stock, available to buy.

ZERO products were shown. Same for smokeless powder, zero availability.
And primers, the same.
Bullets were better, especially if you shoot 50 caliber or 32 handguns.

We have to hope that we put away a little extra when it was available. I already shared some primers with a 'Fire friend, but there is no way for the supply to match the demand for an unforeseen(?) spike in gun and ammo sales. Shortages have spread into the reloading community in spades, from what I have seen.

Mee-maw and Paw-Paw told me all I need is my single shot 16 gauge that their Gam-Gam left them before going off to the war.

Got any bullets that fit?

Plenty of primers, powder, components, and loaded ammo in Northern Colorado.

A bit surprising actually...

A big yes on Houston's. Back in the.day, the Parry Lodge would fix you a nice box lunch in the morning
to take with you while exploring. It's all changed now but the Hollywood star pics are still there on the walls. Went looking for the.Paria movie set a few years ago but it had burned down. It was pretty cool and they made a lot of movies there.

Scheel's in Johnstown.

Fully stocked at normal prices.

Sportsman's off I-25 and Hwy 34 had good stock too. My club (Liberty Firearms) also mostly full.

I wonder about Johnstown and No Cal --
THe only reason I can think of that there's ammo is -- all the Americans, or at least most, of the clientele, have already picked up and moved elsewhere more politically to their liking.
Here in the Flathead, there's nichts. At least nothing I want to buy at the price offered, usually a record.

Slightly off topic but in a fun news kind of way.... A small gun shop has opened that is only a 20 minute drive to get to (next nearest is a full hour drive) .... I have gotten to know the owner and the gun smith that works there pretty well. I can now order firearms by text message.... Just send a text about what I'm looking to buy and generally I'll get a text back after he checks his suppliers within 10 Mins or so with a price . I call with credit card info if he can order what I'm shopping for and 3 days later I pick it up.....

There is a bunch of stuff that I really dislike about modern life, but gun shopping by text is fun.....

Easy.

It's not about sales and current profits.

It's about being gun companies and Biden possibly ending up president.
Would I be years of boom, like Obama?
Or will the socialists manage to finally destroy our culture?

Is your local Economy strong?
Posted By: JamesJr Re: Run on Guns and Ammo - 12/04/20
There is very little ammo to be found around these parts, with the exception being shotgun shells, and even those have been picked over pretty good. The big box stores, the Walmarts and Academy's have been sold out for months, Rural King is pretty much sold out too, and the distributors I've checked have none. I do know where there is a farm store that has some 17 Remington, 204 Ruger, 222 Rem, and some 25-06 ammo, if you're willing to pay their price.

Reloading components are just as scarce. I just bought a new 6.5 CM, and want to try some different bullets in it than what I normally shoot in the cartridge. Midsouth is where I get my reloading supplies, and they are pretty much sold out of all the popular bullets, as well as brass, powder, and of course, powder. I'm okay on powder, brass, and primers, but I do need to buy some more bullets. May have to try some I would not normally buy.

People are scared of what is going to happen here, and it is a combination of a Biden presidency, as well as the potential of more violence from ANTIFA and BLM. I know some people who have bought AR's who, under ordinary circumstances, would never have done so. That's why ammo and certain firearms are hard to find, ass it's better to need it and have it, than to need it and not have it.

I'm hoping we have something similar to what happened with 22 ammo where sanity was restored after a few years of cuckoo.

Posted By: OldRook Re: Run on Guns and Ammo - 12/04/20

Pretty slim pickings here in Northern, IN. Visited 4 shops yesterday while traveling for work over in the NW part of the state.. Guns for the most part was no issue, lot of black rifles and handguns it appeared.. Ammo was available, but man were they proud of it!!! Almost bought some .223 ammo at Bass Pro for .50 a round in 150 round cases, but didnt. I get people asking me each week if i have any for sale and I dont!! Next couple of places I stopped they were in the .70-.75 range for the same stuff... Midwest Gun Exchange had a good amount of 9mm, .40, .45 acp etc... But again, pricey...

I bought 8 lbs of powder, a hundred bullets (44 mag XTP) and a couple of misc items at Kempfs in Michigan City.. $25/lb for the shooters choice creedmoor powder.. decent price. They had some primers, but were limiting them to the amount of projectiles you purchased. A solid plan I thought.

I'm well stocked on everything except maybe Large Rifle Magnum primers, only have around 1300 of those.. Would buy a couple thousand if i run across them. I don't shoot the .300 much anymore and the boy only shoots a dozen of the 7mm variety yearly, so we are good for a bit.. Just like having a few more on hand. I've got enough other primers on hand I figure I can trade for some if need be.

I wonder if the production is beginning to catch up.. If so we could see some cheap components popping up again.. Would be nice.. My wife actually looked at me the other day and said I guess I should not have been complaining when you were buying all those components, should have told you to buy more.. LOL - bout fell out the chair.

The shortage is real and no end in sight. I can understand if all of the "kook" ammo (9mm, 5.56, 308, etc) is in short supply, but when you can't even find a box of Winchester Power Points in 3006 anywhere, you know it's serious.

Plenty. The boys and I will be using two on the 21st, a BRNO sidelock SxS and A LeFever Nitro SxS. Yesterday I hit a LGS that was well stocked with firearms of all types priced a hair above normal. Their ammo, which they had plenty of, was priced sky high. Then I hit my range and, as usual, a pretty good selection of reloading supplies. I picked up some .357 Sierra 110 gr JHP's for $20/100 and some Starline 38 Special +P brass for $16.50/100. Most all Reloader and Ramshot powders along with others in stock. Stocking stuffers for the boys.

OK, Thanks. I was at a shop called Liberty something in FoCo and it didn't have anything. My local Sportsman's has about 1 lb of powder and a couple hundred shotgun primers, although they had some 9mm on the shelves last time.

Serious it is, for the most part all Ammo is very difficult to get and priced high no matter what caliber. I picked up 20 pounds of buckshot for reloading, never reloaded buckshot in my life.through 10 together test fired work great, Going to reload for some friends, Neighbors, that are in need and can’t find it anywhere. I’m squared away with everything, That I need. I believe it’s going to get worse before it gets better. Prepare for the worst hope for the best.

I went by one during lunch the other day after learning about a 22 ammo dump around the area at the walmarts. Nothing. Did buy the only 3 boxes of 410 7 1/2. BPS had a good bit M855 yesterday. That was the first in a while. Picked up a few boxes.

I thought all walmarts pulled guns right before the election due to looting concerns. They pulled all guns at ours.

I'm seeing 556 and 22lr in the lgs just sitting, prices are too high and very few folks are willing to pay them. Hopefully that will ease up the shortage some. The line at Academy in the mornings before opening is 40-50 deep here...crazy.
Posted By: IndyCA35 Re: Run on Guns and Ammo - 12/04/20
As of the last time I bought some, shotgun stuff--shells, primers, powder, #7-1/2 lead, wads--was still plentiful. But that was 6 weeks ago. I don't think it will last. Demand for 9mm, .223, etc. will cause manufacturers to switch production from shotgun stuff.
Posted By: horse1 Re: Run on Guns and Ammo - 12/04/20
The social media secondary market has made these boom-bust cycles worse. No longer does one have to wait for the 1x-2x/yr gun show to hoard and sell. Anyone with enough time to be in the ammo dept when the shipment shows up can buy all they're allowed to and throw it up on any number of auction sites the same day.

I think this is very true. They're going to manufacture what there is the biggest demand for. If they only have resources to devote to a limited number of items at a time something has to be cut out.

Social media also is the driving force behind getting the word out so that everyone panics and tramples old ladies and young children to clean out the shelves. The membership of the 'fire certainly does its best to contribute to this.
Couple of weeks ago, I was at the local gun store and heard someone ask for 9mm and 5.56. Response from the clerk was that they didn't have any at all.

Lot of people just never learn anything except the hard way. The country has seen more than a few ammo /component panics yet when it let's up they fail to lay in an adequate supply for their needs. Couple weeks back a former coworker called me and said he only had 9 rds of 06 left and could I help him out? I asked him how he screwed that up and he replied just too busy. Long story short I loaned him a 50 rd box loaded with gi brass, superformance and 165 gr btsp Hornady. Told him to make sure they would chamber in his x bolt, they did but not easily it bothered him. I told him that they were loaded for my 06's not his. To go through the box and separate all that chambered easier for immediate use. He has made efficient use of his remaining factory rds with some still left. In a couple of weeks I get my ammo back. I am not in the business of custom loading for people, I load them for my guns they chambered fine in all my 30-06's. I helped him out again but this is the last time. No money involved I just wanted to make sure he had ammo to fill the freezer with. Mb

There is a trailer up the road here. Every sat and sun and usually a random day during the week. pew pew pew, pow pow pow. Occasional mag dump in the mix, mostly sounds like 9mm

Some cap on the head backwards guy with rat-like features

I hope he has ammo for hell or high water.

Been pretty dry here, almost no common ammunition and most of the reloading components are gone in the few local shops we have left. I did just stop to buy an extra doe tag for the weekend and they had just received a shipment of powder and some ammunition. Grabbed a pound of Varget and H4350 and 2 boxes of 130gr Accubonds for the 6.5’s in the safe. Phone was ringing off the hook while I stood at the register with guys looking for guns, ammo and powder and every one of them asked how late they were open tonight. That shipment ain’t gonna last.

I did find a box of 123 SST's in Academy this morning for a pretty decent price. I've been wanting to reload a few and try them. Otherwise, the pickings were very, very slim. Only a couple of boxes of bullets were all that was there.

I was in Tucson just over a week ago, stopped in Sportsmans Warehouse just to look around and see just how bad things are. The only shotgun ammo they had was 10 gauge. Three clerks at the gun counter, folks lined up about 6-8 deep, waiting to get up there. Crazy times we live in.

Some say you can get it somehow, but it's not on display.

We are getting a lot of ammo coming in and more is heading out. SW is cleared of nearly most of the ammo in about 1.5 hours. ARs are sold in two to three days. Alaska Ammo has some ammo but not like they used to. Same thing, it is sold as quickly as it comes in. Iron and Wood also gets ammo and its quickly gone. Shotgun shells last longer but they are depleted quickly as well. A lot of the ammo is getting stashed as people feel that the dollar is going to tank soon but Ammo is always worth more.

Haven’t been back since! 🤠

There’s a lot of shotgun ammo and reloading equipment available around here. I went to my local LGS and I was extremely pleased to see them opening cases and pricing boxes. They were NOT scalping as I think they had 10mm FMJ for $28 or $30 a box of 50 and many options of HP self defense in 9mm and 10mm, .40 and .45. .308 and 7.62x39 was 8 or 9 bucks for 20.

I then found a reloading company around the corner from them that I didn’t know was there. They take orders and load to fill them. My buddy just paid $140 for 250rds of 9mm. I bought 500rds of 9mm at Cabelas for $150 but that must’ve been a fluke because they’re out every time I’ve been back since. I’ve always had enough ammunition for all my firearms on hand to take care of my family and children for my lifetime and theirs but during times like this I’ll add to my stores and shore up my deficiencies.

Ammo is available but unless you’re lucky you’ll likely pay through the nose for it.

In an hour or so I’m headed over to Benchmark barrels to pick up a rifle I dropped off yesterday and I’m trying to figure out if I need any of the “oddball” bullets they have.

Why in the hell did people not stock up after the last shortage... or the one before that... or the one before that.

It's almost like people are stupid or something...

It doesn't matter if you stocked up. I guarantee that I'm stocked up more than most here, and did a lot of stocking up when supply was plentiful and prices cheap. That doesn't mean, however, that I don't care about the shortage and current prices, because every round I fire has now to be replaced, unless I bought enough to supply me the rest of my life, which I didn't, and I imagine few if any did. My supply gives me a buffer of maybe a year or two where I could hold off resupplying and yet shoot all I want, but not in every caliber.

.223 Federal American Eagle 55 Grain FMJ plinking ammo in-stock @Reeds Sporting Goods. $15.99 a box, but better than a stick in the eye.

I realistically could hold off for the rest of my life if I used components and ammo conservatively. But my wife. She goes through 2-3K of 223 and 9mm ammo per year. So I am constantly resupplying her shooting. I could use more 308 Win but otherwise I feel that I am pretty well covered. Most of my father's guns were "pilfered" by my inlaws but I got most of his ammo and reloading supplies. My uncle left his Alaskan Reloading supplies when he left the state. Fotis could tell you that working for near minimum wage at SW might not be for some but our discount on ammo and components might be one of the reasons that we are there.

Was at mine earlier today to get a hunting license and they had firearms and ammo in the display.

Yes. The two vendors I work with are literally out of 95% or more of their normal stocks.. YESTERDAY, one had 40 rifles of a certain type that a customer of mine wanted to give to his son for Christmas.. I told him to call me asap... Well, that call didn't come in until this morning - and ALL 40 were gone by then.. Only ONE (repeat ONE) rifle was left and it was an odd duck - something scumload would probably drop a load to have...

There's literally nothing available under a geezer or two... +++

Ammo scalpers, the lowest scum in the hobby/industry.

I just did a NICS check yesterday for a 24hr member and it was instantly answered and I got a response right then... just like it used to be and should be. Except the only explanation is there is no inventory for people to buy right now, so checks have been speeding up. I have not got any attempt at them even running the preliminary check while I waited, in months!

The last thing about Walmart I heard was that they were removing all guns from the shelves a couple of months back, due to the "social unrest" stuff. A couple of days later, they were supposedly putting them all back. Guess it was bad publicity.

It not for the ammo scalpers armslist would be no more.

Plenty of ammo available online....at 3X what you paid for it a year ago.

My local Wally still has a pile o' Remington .300 Win mag ammo, but nuthin' else. I could understand some weird, oddball caliber, but .300 Win mag? What's wid dat?

Round here, only way you are taking a shotgun or rifle home is if you are in the market for something north of 2K. Everything else is gone.

Handguns are non-existent.

Seems like most popular rifle ammo is gone, but lots of 7x57 and wsm around.

As if on queue, the local place that consistently selling primers notified me, today, that they’re now rationing 200 per week. I (used to) go through over 1k in SR primers a month. I gotta stop or I’ll rip through my reserve by this time next year.

When this happened last time, I focused on casting/loading slugs and 00B. Guess I’m back to that.

Stopped in Cabas today and found 115gr 9mm for $139/500. Not the worst price

A bit surprising actually...

Where? I could run down there tomorrow if we are talking about bricks of primers. The last time I was foraging in FoCo the shelves were pretty empty.

Scheel's in Johnstown.

Fully stocked at normal prices.

Sportsman's off I-25 and Hwy 34 had good stock too. My club (Liberty Firearms) also mostly full.

My wife and I drove south of the border today to walk around the Chapungu Sculpture Park and look for Christmas gifts. I was surprised at the variety and amount of powder at Scheel's at good prices, but they only had a couple thousand small pistol primers with a limit of 200 per day, and the rest of the primer case (locked up behind glass like jewelry), was empty. They did have a few cases of 20 round boxes of loaded .223, some Federal Syntech 9mm and some HST .45 ACP, limit 2 boxes per caliber per day. It looked like a bunch of sharks circling the prey. They also had some bullets for reloading that exceeded the amount available where I live. Sportsman's had an OK supply of powder, but no primers, hardly any bullets, and no loaded ammo in popular calibers. The Liberty range hardly had anything in terms of ammo, and I did not see a reloading section, but I may have missed it. (Nice place, as was Scheel's.). In the end, I didn't buy anything because I only was looking for more primers. But, I suspect that a person who could forage every day for supplies could get by. Anyway, it was a pretty day for a drive and a walk.

i am amazed at the prices of some guns on gunbroker are going for. and not AR style either. i just saw a grice special 35 rem 7600 carbine go for 3k.
Posted By: jnyork Re: Run on Guns and Ammo - 12/08/20
There will be scalpers as long as people keep paying scalper prices. Stop buying their chit and they will soon be out of business.
Went to the local gun store today looking to talk to the gunsmith (turned out he wasn't working today), and in the parking lot on the way back to my car an elderly man, who came out of the store at the same time as me, was proudly holding a box of 9mm in his hands. He seemed overjoyed to have been able to buy a box of it. He announce to me, "It's like gold," as he held it up in the air to show me what he had just acquired in the store.

Based on the experience of past shortages, I had come to be in the habit of keeping at least a couple thousand rounds of range 9mm on hand at any given time, and that's about what I had when the insanity started. I still have nearly a thousand rounds of it left, because I cut way back on shooting 9mm for the purpose of making it last. My 9mm shooting is way down now that I'm on my last thousand rounds of range ammo. I guess I should have made it my policy to keep ten thousand rounds of it on hand. Oh well. Live and learn.
