For 80s, Poltergeist
Deliverance is more scary than the Exorcist or Jaws.

The Shining
FROGS

still creepy to watch.

We’re about the same age. Saw Jaws at a drive-in.

Hated the ocean ever since.

Wolf Creek. Things like that happen. Real horror.
When I first watched it in the theater, the scariest move I had ever seen was Alien. Scared the crap out of me.

Salem’s Lot; 1979. Still a frightening movie, with few “special effects”
The Shining. Just enough reality mixed in to make it scary without the campy make believe effect of a Freddy Kruger type horror movie.

LOL !

I was 5 when my parents took me to see it at the Drive-In Movie in 1965 or 66. Had nightmares for a week.

Rewatched it on ME-TV last night on the “Scengoolie” Show.
Probably the 30th time I’ve seen it. I still laugh at how funny Don Knott’s character in it is. Great classic !
The best part of scary movies are the half naked girls running from the monsters.

Not scary in the traditional way but a total mindphuck.

Knock-Knock. Keanu Reeves

No spoilers but basically a Successful married guy. Hot wife has to go out of town for business. That night 2 chicks knock on his door after being lost in the rain. He lets them in to use the phone and dry off....

Put yourself in his shoes and it’s the most anxiety ridden movie I’ve ever seen.

Them!!! LOL! How many Wilhelm screams are in that flick???
If the 2014 movie "The Hunted" doesn't creep you out and make you jump a couple times, you're dead.
"Salem's Lot"- Messed me up.

"The Ring"- Solidified my resolve that horror movies have no redeeming value to society, and messed me up.

Invaders from Mars was made using soup can and “Jiffy Pop” pie plates as props.

Looking for more realistic production value that came out in the 70’s

Jaws looked soooo real.

We had a chair by a window in our living room that I usually sat in while watching TV at night when I was a kid. I wouldn't sit by a window after dark for about a month after watching that movie.
1975, Race with the Devil, with Peter Fonda. After the movie two friends and myself had planned to camp out. I wasn’t old enough to drive but the other two where brothers and one was 14 so he had a permit to drive.
We didn’t make it through the night, out of a dead sleep we were awakened by a large crash out in the trees. We got up, fired our 22’s out into the trees, got in the car and headed for home. The next day we came back to collect our stuff and investigate. It appears that a huge branch had fallen off a tree. We were pretty sure Bigfoot had pulled it down in the middle of the night.

Are you certain Bigfoot didn't pull it down in the middle of the night?
At the time it wouldn’t have surprised me as Bigfoot, ufo’s and cult cattle mutilations were all the rage.

I see the SD by your name.

Any cool crop circles back then? shocked
The only crop circles were the cookies we spun in the stubble fields and on the school lawn.
Yes, "Knock, Knock" is a bit disturbing.

And there was "Bare Wench Project" circa 2000. I understand it inspired some sequels. But the first was about all I could take.

As another has stated, I just do not have the "suspension of disbelief". So called horror flicks do not really phase me. My wife finds anything with flowing blood to be very disturbing. So we avoid the genre.

I remember watching "War of the Worlds" when it came out on TV. I was only about six or seven, but I was fascinated.

My Mom, on the other hand was totally freaked out. It was dark that evening when chore time came, cow needed milked and calves needed fed. Mom made me go along because she was afraid to go out in the dark after watching the movie.
The Exorcist is a classic based on a book of the same name by William Peter Blatty. The sequel Exorcist 2 was not based on one of his books and sucked ass however. But the 3rd film in the series (Exorcist III circa 1990) starred George C Scott and was actually based on Blatty's 2nd book called Legion. It is a really good horror movie. I highly recommend it.

Another good one I haven't seen mentioned is "The Thing" 1982 version with Kurt Russell.
1959's The Tingler had me wondering about parasites for a while.
The Blob scared Boomers pretty bad. LOL

There is no need to be scared if you have a S&W Model 15. But probably you gotta need a bigger boat.
Exorcist
the entity 1982
The Mummy with Boris Karloff. It wasn't even necessary to watch the movie. The nightmares started just by watching the picture/movie still in TV-magazine.

The Thing from Antother World (1951) with James Arness as "The Thing". I was watching this film at the age of 9 or 10 together with my younger siblings under the watchful eyes of my grandmother. When the nightmares started the following night my parents had do deal with and it was my poor grandma who got a shydtload of complaints.

Concerning "The Mist": Watching the first time was like a load of sleeping pills. But years later I learned to appreciate the art of the movie and it became a little bit more scary.

As an adult the scariest movie for me was the original early 70s "Last House on The Left". The main reason it was so scary for me was at the time we had a toddler daughter and a newborn daughter and psychos are real.

As a kid the two scariest movies for me were "The Tingler" and the 1960 movie, "Black Sunday".
"Planet of the Apes" because it was almost true during the oblama years and is still threatening the country.
Babadook is a good scary recent one.
I don’t like scary movies.

A buddy talked me into watching the “4Th Kind”

Supposed to be true story of paranormal activity in Alaska.

When that dude shot up outta the bed hovering....

I was running like Fred Flintstone. But not going anywhere. 😂😂

Nope. "Night of the Grizzly" was 1966.

"Grizzly" was 1976.

I remember it vividly because I was 6 years old in '76 and we watched Grizzly as a family in the basement of our new house. I held off going upstairs to use the bathroom because it was dark and I just knew that giant bear was up there. I finally couldn't hold it any longer and ran upstairs. Meanwhile, my oldest sister had snuck up and hid in the living room and came out of the dark roaring like a bear.

I was paralyzed with fear and pissed all over the floor of the dining room.

My cousin was reluctant to even swim in a swimming pool for years after seeing Jaws. When he'd come over to swim in our pool, you only had to shout "SHARK," and he's swim to the edge at top speed and jump out in terror. I guess I was about fourteen or fifteen and he was about twelve or thirteen at the time. It was hilarious.
The Omen. I was not a kid when I saw it and went home and slept with a night light on.

I never found Jaws to be overly scary, it's just a great movie because of the interaction between Quint, Hooper, and Brody.

The script, the directing, the musical theme, and the acting was just superb.

This. I had to read 6 pages to find the obvious answer. If The Omen doesn't creep you out, then nothing will. You guys keep arguing about second place. Silver Bullet has some darn suspenseful parts as well. It's favorite of mine.
I had a move scare the heck out of me as a kid. Not sure off the title. It appeared to be depicted in the late 60s or early 70s. It was filmed in a city, and much of the focus was on a large clock. Creepy old guy would peek out the windows of a tall apartment building at the main actors as they left and approached the building. That damn movie kept me up at night for years.

IMO, the 'best' horror movie of all time, by a wide margin, is The Shining, (1980).

Next up would probably be The Exorcist (1973), then, maybe, The Amityville Horror (1979).

Scariest would probably have to Night of the Living Dead (1968), mostly because I watched it when I was a youngster and it scared the Tarnation out of me - but I watched it through to the end.
I must admit, 'The Gargoyles' scared the schit out of me when I was a kid. I think it was a made for TV flick.
That little voodoo witch doctor doll guy lived in a wall.
TV movie in the 70,s
Trying to kill some woman.

That one irritated me also.

Not a movie, but Night Gallery (1969-1973), was fairly scary when I was a youngster.

C.H.U.D. Cannibalistic Human Underground Dwellers. A classic.

1968 Planet of the Apes. Rod Serling wrote a good part of the screenplay, and the whole movie feels like a two hour Twilight Zone episode.
The scariest horror movie for me was "The Shining". The overall scariest, depressing, disturbing and haunting made for the masses movie ever for me was "Sophie's Choice".

Mothman is creepy as Schitt. Call it a Harpie, or whatever you want, that shchittbird’s been hanging around as long as the written word.

The Amityville Horror lit my lamp pretty bad.

Im not following the rules here but WTH, this was a 1966 film. Ive been a horror film lover from way back. The first horror movie I saw that really scared the hell out of me was "The Frozen Dead" with Dana Andrews. Saw it at the drive in, I was around 12-13. I hated moths for years after seeing that as a little kid. Fuggin turn the light off in here, it's drawing moths. No need for a night light in my room.

The Mothman Prophecies was loosely based on real occurrences supposedly.

Dee Wallace was hot when she was young. She was also in Cujo, which was another great horror flick.
When Halloween came out I was 18 years old and shared a house in Houston Tx w two other guys that we worked together doing drywall finishing.

One of the guys was 6’5” the other 5’10”. The smaller guy had his lil bro visiting from Mo. at the time.

I had a steady gf at the time that lived just down the street w her parents.

The 5 of us planned on going to the Sunday matinee showing of Halloween.

The gf & I ran late as we had to do something of great importance before heading to the theater.

When sh & I arrived the movie had already started, the theater wasn’t full but certainly a good number of folks there.

As I scanned the place looking for my crew, bingo ! They were silhouetted by the light from the screen & I could see the 6’5” guy in the middle of the two smaller brothers.

We slunk down the aisle quietly & sat right behind them. They were already so engrossed by the movie, they were unaware of our presence.

I don’t know what overcame me, but when it got to a really suspenseful & scary part of the movie, I reached out & grabbed big boy by the shoulders & let out a low guttural growl in his ear.

That big sob leapt to his feet, with a blood curdling scream sure to impress any woman or Comanche warrior.

Every head in the theater swiveled to see just who had been murdered right there.

I was pretty sure he was gonna kill me, but the four of us were laughing so hard he soon joined in.

God those were good times, getting in fights at Gilleys & the Nesadel. Bailing each other outa jail. Going to Bolivar Island, Galveston & other places. Bunch of idiots we were, swimming down streets in the floodwaters, wonder we didn’t die.

We sent the lil brother home w a giant bald spot in the back of his head, from getting the hair ripped out by a guy in the Nesadel parking lot one night. Bastard we caught up w him later there & got revenge.

Yep. I still remember watching it as a 10 year old in 1970
Nobody mentioned “Pet Cemetery” 😬
Dirty Harry has a pretty high creep factor.

Not a horror or sci-fi but it’s damn sure dark.
