Hank
"62 Chevy pickup, shortbed, 3 speed on the tree, 235 six banger. Seafoam green, of course (weren't they all Seafoam green?). It rode nice and smooth, but couldn't get out of it's own way. Great vehicle for a teenage kid, really.
72 Chevelle. Loved that sob. One day the old man said you get a job today?(16, talked to the girl who worked with me into quitting and going back to her place to smoke and get busy). I said no, ill go get one tomorrow. The old man grabbed the keys outta my hand, went out and pulled it into the garage and started sanding it. Im like wtf are you doin?!?! He said I told you keep a job or the cars gone. He painted the sob at 2am, and 6pm the next day it went to auction.
A 1979 Jeep CJ-7. I bought it new while in high school. It lasted a year and a half or so.

‘64 Vedub Microbus, replacement motor with forty wild horses on tap, four on the floor (quite a long ways down), hand over hand to steer that big ol wheel. Never could burn rubber, step on the gas and it just got louder is all 🙂

Life aint ever been easy. Said it a million times. My grandfather was a millionaire multiple times over. We got none of that. My old man knew the only way I was gonna make it was to make me tough. Even if that meant treating me in a way many would disapprove of. Didnt understand then, do now and love him for it.
1968 Mustang GT coupe with 390/4V & C6 trans.
1972 Buick Electra 225 1 door, 455 engine.
Bought it for $100.00, passenger side door was stuck shut, otherwise it would have been a 2 door.
Fast for a big car, raced a buddie that just built up the engine in his 77 Firebird, (think it was a 305 or a 301) and I beat him soundly, much to his dismay.
It got about 8 mpg.
Exhaust system was full of holes, my mom said she always knew I was close to home because the dog would hear the exhaust blocks away and stand up and start wagging his tail.
1970 Ford F-100 , 360 V8 Auto with A/C . I still have fond memories of that truck .
My first car was a '76 Yamaha RD 350B.
As to an actual car, it was a '84 Subaru wagon, I believe. Hated it, but got it for next to nothing so put it on the road. Thing had the 'door open' alarm on full time. It lasted a whole two weeks or so before I attempted a badass e-brake powerslide onto a 90 degree right hander in about 6" of snow doing maybe 50 to impress myself. Nose made it dead center onto the side street, like something Steve McQueen would've done. Problem was rest of the car didn't stop sliding as I'd predicted and planned--until I smacked the curb broadside with both driver's side rims and wheels. Damn thing came very close to flipping sideways before crashing back down. Think I busted something connecting the wheel to the axle. Car no workee so good after that. Must've been that Godforsaken constant dinging noise made me temporarily lose my mind.
My first car was a 1953 Pontiac convertible. Neighbor knew I was a car nut and gave it to me. It was ten years old. It had a flathead straight eight which said "Hi compression" on the head. It was something like 7.8 to one compression, about like a lawn mower. It had a four speed Hydramatic transmission and an Indian head on the hood which light up when the headlights were on. It had a power top.
Next I had another freebie car, a 1953 Ford Victoria hardtop. Not the Crown Victoria, just plain Victoria. It was a flathead V-8 with Ford-O-Matic. Then I had a 1951 Ford with a 55 Ford Y-block V-8. All those old cars had six volt electrical systems. I think 1953 was the last year for flatheads except for the Mopar sixes. Detroit went to twelve volt electrical systems around 1954, too.
Back then older cars were cheap. I had a bunch of sub-$200 cars which were good rides. I had a 1957 Studebaker Silver Hawk with the 289 cubic inch Studebaker engine based on the 1949 Cadillac engine. I paid $80 for a 1961 Dodge Lancer. It had a 170 cubic inch slant six and three on the floor from the factory. I put a new clutch in it and flushed out the engine with kerosene to get rid of the sludge. It worked. I sold it to a family friend after the summer of 1964 and he had it ten years later. He said it was the best car they ever had. Those were the days....
1964 Chevy Impala SS 327 . . . I was 19 and bought it from my dad's boss for $350. Beautiful car. I asked my dad if I could leave it at his house while I went to Marine Bootcamp in June 1972. He refused, saying there were too many cars at the house. I sold it for $350.
1968 MGB and a 65 TR4.
Wouldn’t have been able to have either one,
If not for my uncle. He keep both running like a top,
It was his passion!
1956 oval window VW from an old man, the original owner, it was 1969, $300 for the car and $300 for the year to Allstate for insurance, sold it about a year later when I bought a 68 Beetle, much better heat! lol kid I sold it to totaled it in 2 weeks, schmuck
65 Buick Electra 225 4 door with a 445 Wildcat motor. Back seat was the size of a twin bed, my girlfriend's dad hated that car! Bought it for $250, sold it for $500.
69 Mustang Fastback, wish I still had it!!!
‘66 Plymouth Fury. Paid a hundred bucks for it. It’s end of life was in a demo derby. 🤣
Exhaust system was full of holes, my mom said she always knew I was close to home because the dog would hear the exhaust blocks away and stand up and start wagging his tail.
When my son was a teenager he was the only member of the household our little 8lb terrier mutt would bark at when he came home. Many times we would hear him whispering expletives at the dog when he tried to sneak home late
1960 Chevy Corvair. Bought it for 200 bucks. It used almost as much oil as gas.
1964 Mercedes Benz 220 C. It was 11 years old when it was handed down to me. I Loved that car.
59 Ford Fairlane station wagon. I was a college student 300 miles from home. I made regular trips home and always had 5 riders to pay for the gas. One time this good looking but very quiet girl heard there was a car going her way and hooked a ride. 3 years later I married her. We were married 33 years before the C got her.
1971 VW van.
J 10 Jeep pickup 6cyl 3 speed on the floor. It was just a beat up old ranch truck that beat walking.
In 1963 following hs graduation, I purchased a 1960 Hillman Minx convertible, green with a tan top 4 cyl , 4 on the floor.
It was as new when I bought, it wasn’t when my father had it towed away.
Bob
78 Camaro with a 350 and a 4 speed.
I learned to drive on my friend's 1969 Dodge Coronet, but my first car was a 1975 Gran Torino (not red with a white nike swoop, alas). It was actually my mom's car, but I considered it mine. That lasted a year and then I bought my a 1979 Mercury Zephyr from my dad's company. The Zephyr lasted me 10 years and was the most basic, underpowered, poorly made pile of crap that America could produce in the late 1970s. A 3.3 liter inline 6 with a single barrel carb and under 90 hp, and I still figured out a way to get in lots of trouble.
1948 Ford 1/2 ton 85 Hp flat head V-8 4 on the floor, really a 3 speed with a granny 1 st gear, $ 50.00 from Thompson's junk yard, rebuilt the motor in shop class, broke it in half hauling camp and Elk back up river, spent all my hunting season money on a Remington 721 and a 55 Ford 1/2 ton with inline 6 and 4 on the floor, I was the cat's ass, new truck and rifle. the good old day's Rio7
'69 Plymouth Roadrunner 383 auto. It was 3 years old and perfect and I thought I had died and gone to Heaven. Been a dedicated Mopar guy ever since!
1970 Buick Skylark coup...
78 Dodge Power Wagon
New Process 4 speed
You guys had some nice first cars. High rollers.
1959 Chevy 4 door. First new car a 1969 Dart swinger 340 torque flight.
an English ford, a 1961 Zodiac
92 Mazda minivan - I was a cool kid...
1986 Cutlass Calais in 1993. 105k miles and rusted like it was 30yo at that point. Split the $1000 with my folks and immediately got two jobs once I was mobile. Waxed around the rust and the 2.5L iron duke never gave me a lick of trouble.
Times were so simple back then.
78 Dodge Power Wagon
New Process 4 speed
Holy cow Slummy! Your just a kid.
Or they didn’t let you buy a car until you got out of juvenile detention !!!!! 😀😀😀😂
66 ford Falcon Auto with the small six cylinder. Dad got it for me and knew I couldn't do much with the automatic in it. If it hada the three or a four speed I could have won lots of street races. That six has lots of torque. Next was a 67 Mustang fastbaack with 390 4V and an automatic. That one would roar and burn lots of rubber. Had to be careful not to ruin the tires. PA Hick your Dad was a great father for doing that and you learned a valuable lesson. Character is built one brick at a time. EE don't go away angry just go away. But Be Well, RZ.
The year was 1973, I bought a 1967 Dodge Dart GTS.
66 Galaxy 500, 390ci
Hand me down, worked on it as much as I drove it.
I don't think it got any mileage it got yardage.
1965 Corvair Monza had 4 single barrel carbs 140 horsepower.
First was a 1968 Bronco, 289 V-8 and 3 speed standard.
Second was a 1969 Pontiac GTO with a 350HP 400 and automatic.
First 4 wheeler was a '47 Willys Jeep.
1963 Rambler station wagon. The one with 3 seats. I would fill it up with all my friends and go stump jumping in the desert. There was always someone who thought he could ride the roof rack after a few beers. Twas my job to show him how wrong he was.
George

Laughing!
A '60 Rambler wagon was my second car. Bought it for a hundred bucks. When i got it home I noticed it had a c-clamp holding the differential together.
1958 Mercury station wagon, purchased in 1968 for $25 from a guy who "won" it in a benefit raffle. It had a 430 V-8, push-button automatic transmission, power windows/seats/etc.--and the radio even worked. It had plenty of room in the back for spending down-time with girl friends, and also plenty of seat room for transporting friends around town.
The downside was it got around 4 mpg in town, maybe 6 on the highway. But I offset that by asking friends for a quarter when I gave them a ride--and a gallon of gas was around 27 cents at the time.
My dads 67 f-100. 352 4 speed. Would spin the hell out of 1 tire till I did one to many reverse burnouts. I put a new rearmed in er along with a edelbrock intake, Holley 4 barrel and a set of hedman headers. Still have the ol truck. Plan to rebuild it from the frame up.
1956 Plymouth Belvadere Convertible. The back window zipped out and was perfect for surfboards. The trunk was big enough to hold a dirt bike if you had some help loading it. Cruised the coast from Santa Barbara to La Bufadora riding the hills and surfing the beaches. Those areas were undiscovered in 1963.

1957 Chevy Belair. 2 door sedan, 283, auto.
My Dad bought a 1966 mustang when my older sister started to drive. It passed to me a 1.5 yrs later when I started to drive. Bought my own car. a 1974 mustang at the start of my senior year. My mom still has the 66 mustang and it is being restored right now.
1967 Impala. (Im a 1969)
4 Door
Three on the tree, 283.
3.50 rears, posi.
Radio delete
Manual steering
Manual brakes
Had side mirrors on both sides. I think that was an option, the only one, besides the posi.
57k miles.
Some kind of rough oxidized green paint.
Wouldn't buff out.
Dad and I did get junkyard parts and give it power steering.
Hated that car.
But I couldn't afford one on my own and the folks were kicking
in some money. So they chose.
If I could buy it today for $800, I'd drive it.
But at 51. IDGAF what I drive as long as it goes, steers, and stops.
My first car was Henry the Ford. A ‘71 Galaxy 500 four door hardtop with a 351 Windsor. Henry was a hand-me-down that Dad bought used for a family car. My aunt put a big dent in the door, and we couldn’t find a replacement, so I guess the “Old Man” figured I couldn’t hurt it much.
Henry was known among my friends for tossing the hubcaps off doing donuts and jumping through covered bridges!
We had a salvage, and when I turned 15 Dad give me a choice as to what I wanted to fix up. A 76 Cougar XR7, a 68 Camaro with a 350, a 72 Mustang fastback with a straight 6, and a 72 Monte Carlo with a bigblock 402.
He said they’d all be roughly the same amount of work and money, so whichever one I picked was ok with him. Those two great big valve covers in the Monte made the choice pretty easy.
I worked on the thing for a year before I ever put a mile on it. New quarter panel, door and fender & bumper. Wet sanded it all and my cousin painted it “Russet Metallic” a copper color brown with metal flake. I hunted up a set of factory Rally Wheels with rings and centers.
I’m not bragging, but that freakin thing was immaculate, and the torque of the 402 made it quick.

1976 F150 300 I-6. 3 on the tree. You could stand under the hood in it with your feet on the ground and change the plugs. We swapped in a top loader, and my brother drove it to death. Good truck.
1) 1971 Plymouth Barracuda
2) 1967 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova
I had some nice toys until I decided I needed a wife.
77 plymouth Volare station wagon. Iconic. Clutch plate went out and I bought a 76 f150 for $300. The wagon has more memories, but I'd take that truck back in a second.
1962 Ford Falcon 2dr.

72 Plymouth Cuda, 340 4 speed. Wish I still had it.
1954 2 door Chevrolet Bel air
The first car that I bought was a 1970 Datsun 510. Now wish that I had it again. Of course, I could say that about a couple of cars.
Had one just like that, but not an SS. 327 with a three speed. Got it for $50 with a trashed engine when I was 16. Rebuilt the engine and drove it through my college years.
Jerry
Still have mine! 1970 Olds Cutlass Supreme. Dad rolled it off the showroom floor two months before I was born. I had her completely restored in 1989. Here she is today.
'55 Chem two door hardtop aqua/white.
72 Nova with a 6 cyl, 3 on the floor, AM radio, Rallye wheels, and some chrome trim.
Back in 68 a 16 yo could ride a motorcycle but had to be 161/2 to drive a car, so my first ride was a 67 Norton Atlas 750cc. Later used Mom's 60 Plymouth until I graduated to my own, a 63 Ford 4 door Custom, I think was the model.

69 Charger, 383 magnum and 4 speed.
There was a little car show/ farmer’s market on Main Street here Saturday and a guy had 2 IH pickups and a Travelall from the mid 70’s. Me and dad talked with him and he was telling us all about them and another one he has plus his dream of buying a Scout to add to the collection. When we left dad said, “ he’s a pretty nice guy but he sure does have a bunch of piece of schit trucks”.
I had a pair of Ford Broncos in HS. A 1979 Ranger XLT I still have, 400/C6 TracLok in both diffs, and a 1974 Ranger that was a 200/3sp. The big 79 is always 4 hours of my time and $200 of my money from being “right”.
Still have mine! 1970 Olds Cutlass Supreme. Dad rolled it off the showroom floor two months before I was born. I had her completely restored in 1989. Here she is today.
That is gorgeous. My brother's first car was a 70 Cutlass Supreme and whenever I see one like it I can hear the sound of a block long burnout from my youth...
First car was a 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 convertible. 352 Police Interceptor 352 V-8 cruise-o-matic. Aqua & white.
Same here.......except plain Cougar.....ugly green color.

Little 289 2V ate many small blocks Chevy's.......even with the crappy transmission. Put a high performance air filter on 'er........with 'Thrush' glasspack dual exhaust.
Drag strip ready!
1967 Mercury Cougar XR-7, white with black top and interior. 289 with automatic and T shifter on the console. Leather bucket seats.
Dunno about the 404 but the next generation 504’s established a reputation as one of the few passenger sedans that would hold up in Africa, I enjoyed driving the 504 station wagon version when working for a Dutch Mission hospital, OK. not as much as I liked their LandRovers, but pretty darned cool nonetheless.
White 74 Pontiac Grand Prix.
A 1962 FORD Country Sedan station wagon.
White top/black lower.
6 cylinder with a 3 speed on the column.
Might not have been fast or flashy but i did have room to lay down.
Mine was built in 1967 and was “unsafe at any speed”.
Ted
Mine was a Maroon 2 door 51 Ford flat head V8.
1963 Chrysler 300 convertible. Painted a very dark green, white top and white leather, power seats and windows. I swapped the

1985 Chevy Silverado heavy 3/4 ton. Regular cab, long bed, 4x4.

Needed brakes so Dad sold it for 800 dollars and bought a 68 Chevy long bed "camper special" pickup with 4 on the floor and a straight 6.
First car I bought on my own was a 71 Mustang with a bored-out 302 with dual exhaust and Foghat in the 8 track.
Hand me down ‘78 Coronet Wagon with the Smog 400. What a fuggin Battle Wagon that was to bomb around in. Thing was most at home on the highways. Play “Shepherd of The Road”
With folks in their late eighties Beamers and Mercedes and what not doing the morning commute on the MA Pike and 495 and such. What a blast.
My first car was a '57 Chevy 210, 2-dr post, seafoam green. Had an inline 6 cyl and 2-gear power glide when I got it in '74 and a 350 turbofire V8 (stock) and turbo 400 tranny when I sold it in about '88. The son of the guy I sold it to rolled it 2 weeks later . . . Wish I hadn't sold it.
Same here.....Little 289 2V ate many small blocks Chevy's.....even with the crappy transmission.
All in all, that would have been very unlikely dining unless those Chev drivers were unskilled.
1948 Chev Coupe. Fun - but It did not eat up anything except lubricants.
1962 Pontiac Tempest, badly faded red pain.... mom bought it for $250, off an airman in her office at the Pentagon who was getting transferred to Vietnam.
when I saw in I almost barfed..... crap what a piece of junk, POS looking car.... Mom told me to try it out at least... said it was real peppy for a 6 cylinder.
Took it around the block until I was out of sight of home.... at the stop sign, I stopped, nothing company, so I just floored it...car went every direction but straight...... stopped it, popped the hood. the " 6 cylinder" was a Pontiac 421 crate motor with 2 four barrels in it... guy had been setting up to drag race it...
Had it 8 weeks before mom finally got a clue of it wasn't stock....she took it and sold it back to someone else at the Pentagon...
Next I ended up with 1957 Cadillac Fleetwood 6 door limo, that was a former State Dept Vehicle... Looked like a Mafia Mobile, complete with 22 LR bullet holes in one of the rear fenders....Heaviest car ever built in the USA.. 50 gallon gas tank.. huge engine, with two 4 barrels, the air cleaner cover was so huge, you couldn't see the engine under it...we did wrap the Speedometer on I 95 going down to Richmond, but then had trouble trying to slow it down...
90 days later she took that car, and I ended with a 1970 VW Bug....
1965 Corvair Monza had 4 single barrel carbs 140 horsepower.
And you are still breathing air? Ralph Nader says that car is Unsafe At Any Speed.
65 Impala Sport Sedan. Bought it for a dollar.
1962 Pontiac Tempest, badly faded red pain.... mom bought it for $250, off an airman in her office at the Pentagon who was getting transferred to Vietnam.

1965 Corvair Monza had 4 single barrel carbs 140 horsepower.
And you are still breathing air? Ralph Nader says that car is Unsafe At Any Speed.

1969 ford fairlane 2 door with a hopped up 302
1969 Chevy C/10 longbed, 3 on the tree, 250 ci six cylinder.
Looked just like this one, only red/white.
A red 1992 Ford Ranger, exactly like this one, but in 4wd with off-road tires. With the 4.0L V-6, it would scoot pretty well. I loved that little truck.....
1st vehicle was a 53 IH pickup. 16 inch wheels, non synchro 4 speed with compound low. 65 mph top end.
paid $100 in 1966 and had to get a 6 volt battery for it.
Lived in Colorado at the time and only time we got stuck was when a log bridge over a creek gave way and the truck got high centered.
Had elk in bed of truck.
1st car was a 2 door 57 chevy with 3 speed, 230 cubic inch 6 cylinder over bored, rev kit cam and lifters, 3 two barrel carbs, 4:11 gears, headers.

1975 VW Rabbit, orange, with a sunroof. Was a pretty cool car back in the day. Had some fun in it during college spring breaks.
A 1958 MGA 1500 coupe with the Rudge racing wheels in English racing green. I couldn't even get in one today. At 6'3" it was a tight fit then. Now over 6'7" and an extra 100# s it is only a dream.
'53 Chev - 6 cyl, three on the tree.. Now - how many remember their first license plate number? W90-302 was on that Chevy..
Added: First NEW car was a '69 Triumph TR-6 with O/D... Wish I still had that one...
1958 chev station wagon at 14, field car. First real car 1964 chev belair
1979 Ford 150 Ranger Explorer. Bought used while in High School. Sold it early 90's to a teen cousin when I needed to buy a family truckster.
Wife on left Pops on right. Miss you Pops.
Yeah couldn't find whole truck pic on short order.
That’s a really sharp pickup, I love the Explorer stripe kit. Was it a 351, 400, or 300?
1961 Chevy Impala, 283/powerglide, red and white two door hardtop, i was 15.
No offense, but your dad was a dick.
A good Dad keeps his promises.
The 1st LP on my '57 Chev was "70-A57". 70 was the county number, the rest should be self explanatory . . .
73' Plymouth Valiant with a 318
Does the Ford 8N tractor at five years count? No
Okay how about a 1971 Toyota Celica. 113 cubic inches and 110 hp would just barely push her to 120 mph in fourth gear and 6300 RPM recline.
0 to 30 in first
30 to 60 in second
60 to 90 in third
90 plus in fourth
That little wench took me places 4x4s feared to tread. I could try to count all the times we had her airborne, but that was a long time ago and my memory is not what it once was.
Just let it be said, "A wonderful time was had by all." One could even take care of the local MILF, if you reclined the passenger seat.
1932 Ford hotrod. I was 14 & it was 1964.
In 1959 I bought my first car...a
'49 Ford 4-door sedan that had been lightly sideswiped down the passenger side. $65 Had an excellent engine and 3-speed.
Found a mint '51 Ford Victoria 2-door hardtop with a bad engine and trans for $150 and swapped in the '49's engine and trans. I was stylin!
My first was a 1957 Chevrolet pickup with three on the tree and a floor starter.
That was my first also. 🤠
67 Chevy II Nova, bright blue, with the 194 Straight six and automatic transmission. Bought in 1972. I had more offers to buy that car than any other since, as it was known to be a great candidate for souping up. Cost me $600. Not a hot rod as configured, but it towed my aluminum boat and that was good enough for me.
Most of the Chevy drivers were a little brain dead.
Those 2 bbl 283's were smokin' machines, though.
Are you familiar with the 'Z-eater' Super Cobra Jet Torino, by chance?
It had a coiled Cobra.........with a lil' bitty mouse in the mouth.......all sitting on the shaker.
Same here.....Little 289 2V ate many small blocks Chevy's.....even with the crappy transmission.
All in all, that would have been very unlikely dining unless those Chev drivers were unskilled.
Same here.......except plain Cougar.....ugly green color.
Chrome 60's on the rear.......baby moon chromies on the front. Had the solenoid 3 step turn signals.
8 track stereo. Boosted Tommy James, and Led's 's 'whole lotta love'. Green eyed lady too, Sugarloaf.
890 WLS AM......Chicago. Didn't even notice the static....till FM.
Sure it did.
LMAO.
1954 2 door Chevrolet Bel air
Likewise
1973, skinny Valsdad. Looks like the fender skirts are still on the hardtop coupe.

By 1970 the Chev SBs were way past the 283.
Yes, I helped a neighbor with his Torino (he called it a Cobra) back then but I do not remember any badges - seems like it had a 428 cu in "Cobra-Jet" setup - good power plant but that Torino seemed too heavy to allow top performance. I could be wrong on that - don't know very much about those Fords..

Had a 74 gran torino sport with 351 windsor. Heavy & slow, but was a cool car.
Was referring to the 'Z-Eater'(license plate).....a 429 Super Cobra Jet Torino.....factory solid lifters, 430 locker, etc.
Think Street Machine Nationals. The mouse eating Cobra got a lotta Chevy fans up tight........just like here.
428's chewed cranks.
Most Chevy's.........unmodified.......were crap getting out of the hole. Can you say wheel hop?
Double hump 327's pulled very hard.....spread bore mechanical carbs sounded like a turbine opening up.

It wasn't a 2 bbl Cleveland?
The Cleveland's had a 2 or 4 on the corner of the heads......kinda the equivalent of the humps on Chevy's.
We combed every junkyard.....searching out the 4's. Larger valves and advantaged combustion chambers.
We'd put 351 Windsor heads on 302's(Windsor). Larger valves and, dependent on the year.....smaller combustion chambers......boosting compression.
With modification.....you could install the 4bbl Cleveland heads on a 302.....which could get you close to a faux Boss engine.
We never made that modification.
Back then......a hp per cube was fun. Now, this stock 5.0 (302) in the F150 is rated 395hp.
Technology.

It was a Windsor factory 2 barrel. Had a lifter collapse & while the intake was off I took the heads to machine shop. They went over them & did a 3 angle job on em. Was a good running car, but wouldn't win any races.
My first was a ‘65 Mustang fastback, handed down from my older brother.Dad handed it down to him when he turned 16.No doubt,we both wish we still had it...
1969 Chevy Impala more-door, 350/255hp, 4-bbl Quadrajet. Dad knew how to tune that carburetor, he loved Q-jets and said they were fine carbs.
5.8L 351W. Some engine street mods and off road under chassis build up. Just enough to go where I wanted to hunting, fishing camping pulling trailers and boats.
Teen cousin I sold it took good care of it. Its still running last time I heard around 2010. All fixed up pretty I was told.
1979 Ford 150 Ranger Explorer. Bought used while in High School. Sold it early 90's to a teen cousin when I needed to buy a family truckster.

Good looking fam' and sorry to hear you losing your pops, primo.
!971 Bronco. Poor thing didn't have a chance. Broke everything on it.
83 mustang! Grey, chess little hatchback with a gutless v6 and auto. Bought it myself at age 15 for $2300 in about 88. I totaled it hunting deer. Almost made it too the top of an icy mountain road before it slid backwards down it dropped off about a 10 foot bank and landed upside down in a mountain creek.
Saw some huge bucks on the walk out but needed to get off the mountain and stop some bleeding so we didn't try to get on the deer.

1969 Pontiac Lemans, 350 4 barrel Q jet, factory dual exhaust. Q jets have huge secondaries and were prone to dieseling but if tweaked were an excellent carb. Fouled plugs running regular gas every 2 weeks. Clean the plugs, run premium, set the timing up and that thing would bark the tires hitting 2nd in the Turbo 400 every time. And it wasn't even a muscle car. 2nd car was a 1973 Ford Gran Torino 351 2V. Didn't have enough power to get out of its own way but looked good and with the Concord stereo was fun to cruise in.
FC67 I lived in the Lodi/Merced area up until about Y2K, you any where close?
1972, baby blue VW bug. 4 on da floor! It was a cool ride!
First new car was a special ordered 1970 Hemi 'Cuda. The doors rattled off the lot, but it was fun to drive. I'm surprised that I am still alive.
Now I'm playing with a F150 with a 302 Coyote engine in the barn. Lot of potential in that 4 cam, 4 valve per cylinder engine.
A friend's first car was a bug.
To change the clutch........you had to pull the engine. No hoist or jack required.
A cool ride........air cooled.
1972, baby blue VW bug. 4 on da floor! It was a cool ride!
Saddest first car story ever. Bummer.
That sliding (or spinning) backwards is the most helpless feeling. Had it a few times......but never ended quite that badly.
Unless you had a Leupold, that rifle was likely knocked off zero, anyway.

1978 Buick Regal. Black with tan interior. You needed to turn off the A/C before merging onto the expressway, but this was still in the days of the double-nickel.
I kept two cotton bathroom rugs in the back for quick deployment-- one for the Friday night steady and the other for the Saturday Night steady. I eventually added a can of Raid after time spent beside a cow pasture. We got chiggers that could have killed.
The nice thing about the tan interior was that it hid the mud from my caving trips.

Why is no one copping to their first car being a Vega or Chrysler K car?
No one had an English Ford Cortina either?
Have seen a Peugot listed, and a Studebaker, but no Nash Ramblers, Desotos, Edsels, and other "oddities"?
74 Ford Maverick 4 door. Yellow with a white vinyl top. At least it had a 302.
'69 Chevelle SS with a 396 and 4 on the floor.
I blew it up and burned the rear tires off of it. When it started costing my old man money, he made me get rid of it.
A girlfriend had an Orange Vega in college, for her first car.....with a squealing throw-out bearing.
She sold that and then drove a Ford Granada.
I got roped into changing the water pump in that Granada, when I came up for a visit......middle of the winter.....Twin Cities.
She proposed a couple years later.....about 37 years ago.
Now, wrenching flat sucks.

Was just talking to a friend the other day. It sure would be nice to get a lift installed in the shop to check things underneath!
And I think I recall that orange color. Wasn't very appealing to my sensibilities. But it seems to have captured you a good one. Congrats.
Was just wallerin' under our Ford Five Hundred yesterday.....removing the left rear broken tie rod.
Guess it's called the lateral link, in the biz. Sheared off close to wheel.
The car #5 son had for college up at Northern State, Aberdeen.
Nothing he did.

When I graduated high school in '75, my parents gave me their '69 Mercury Montego that I had been driving. After my first year of college, I sold the Merc and bought a '70 Mach 1 from a schoolmate who was selling it to but a Shelby GT 350. I sure wish I still had the Mach 1.
A '62 Chevy Biscayne - $250 in 1971.

Well. the Vega and the K Car had not even been thought of when I began driving, and I only noted the "first". I had very little $$ and those that followed, in rapid succession, 48 Olds, 49 Studebaker, 48 Studebaker (kept that for 3 years), 50 Plymouth, 51 Dodge, 49 Chrysler Coupe, then the 54 Chev Station Wagon we drove to AZ from PA and all over the US for 7 years. But, owned those first seven in a span of 6 years. Good times.
351 Cleveland 4 bbl? Details, Man.
Spoilers? Louvers?
70 Mach 1 was my second vehicle. Favorite body style to date.

Judging by the posts here.......most would agree.
1970 Pontiac Tempest In A Teapot coupe, a Utah salt-rot car. Six banger, 3 on the tree, unlimited slip differential, manual everything. 22 seconds 0-55. Paid a grand in lawnmower money for it, kept it until after college graduation. It would not go, but it turned and stopped great, especially in winter. Amazing road feel, easy to drift, slide on both pavement, gravel and ice, but just a pussycat with a hair of oversteer. When road conditions were truly terrible, it was a great drive.
When I sold it, the throwout died as the buyer tried to drive it away. So, he got his $300 back and I had to get the paperwork changed back before I could limp it to the salvage yard.
1972 Datsun pickup faded canary yellow. Seems like I pushed it more than drove it.
1972 Datsun pickup faded canary yellow. Seems like I pushed it more than drove it.
My most excellent grad school professor was raised up on the Milk River in N. Montana and drove a 70 Datsun everywhere - called it his "Montana Cadillac". I worked on it quite a bit. That fellow died in it - returning from a trip, driving home from airport, drunk ran a red light and killed him and son. Haven't worked on a Datsun since.
First was a 66 charger.
Apparently came with a 383 but was dealer replaced a year later with a 440 when the original let go (it was a dodge after all. Lol). Thing was flat are up with rust. It was a cool car though. I thought the rear buckets were uber. Sold it after a year.
Kinda wish I had kept it.
Second car was a 67 Camaro. Originally a small block/auto car, it had a 396 with an m22.
Pop sold it because I was a complete dumbazz and didn't deserve it. Owed him money I borrowed to buy it.
Really wish I hadn't been such a putz with that one.
76 F100 4x4 shortbed. Six inch lift kit, 38 inch gumbo mudders, warn winch. Had a 390 engine, four barrel, headers, duals and four on the floor.
Took it out and buried it the first day I had it. Like to have never got it out.
1980 Oldsmobile Omega w/4-speed.
1949 soapbox racer.
My first car was a '57 VW Beetle, last year with the oval rear window. 36 HP and I drove it all week back and forth to college on $2.00 worth of gas, Sunoco 190 a grade below regular gas.
Why is no one copping to their first car being a Vega or Chrysler K car?
Wife still had her first car when we met and later married:
Pontiac Astre[orange of course].
My first was my recently deceased grandfathers 70' 4 dr Malibu
My second[which happened before turning 17] was my fathers 70' Pontiac LeMans Sport conv.
Should have never let that one get away.
A 1960 CW square back, that hardly ever got out of the mechanic shop. After that I got a new AMC Gremlin that had nearly as many problems.
You sound like me and my mom. I had the 1971 VW van, probably the worst vehicle ever made. Every 7K miles the engine would blow. Other than that a great car.
My mom bought a new Gremlin, Good Lord what a piece of crap.
67 Ford Galaxie 500 2dr. 390ci 2 bbl. with S/S Cragar rims and Kelly Springfield Super Charger white letter tires. Man was she sharp.
Ron
1980 Oldsmobile Omega w/4-speed.
I had it's cousin, the 1980 Pontiac LeMans. Man what a turd that car was. Saved up and got a 1970 Chevy C-10 about 8 months later.
- - - I had the 1971 VW van, probably the worst vehicle ever made. Every 7K miles the engine would blow. Other than that a great car. - - .
When our four kids were in their teens I needed an economic hauler - closed my eyes, held my nose and bought a used 71 VW wagon. It turned out to be a good move - spacious, handy and 20 mpg uphill or down, slow or topped out. But it did have small quirks. The ONLY mech problem that ever cost anything - full load of 8 folks going to church - in a second it dropped to 1/2 power. By Sunday eve I had determined that one head had pulled loose from the block (aluminum). Removed rear bumper and center panel, four bolts out, put a rolling jack under the engine and OUT. Put case inserts in, remounted the head, installed engine and ran it another 40k miles - sold it for what we had paid 4 years earlier. Ugly, noisy, etc. - but good for ts purposes.
I may be a car masochist but I love that VW van. However the engine was underpowered and would blow. I owned 3 of 'em and blew 4 engines. You reworked that head and then got 40k more miles out of that car, you had the miracle VW.
1980 Oldsmobile Omega w/4-speed.

The Oldsmobile 350 rocket was a good engine IMO. What was in the Pontiac a 307?
My twin brother and I got a Soil and Water Conservation owned surplus 1963 Plymouth station wagon. It was about 6 or 7 years old when we got it and had seen better days. I think it had a 1964 front end on it. A $50 paint job, new radio (didn't come with a radio, just a blank in the dash. How long has it been since you saw something like that?), and a replacement back seat from the junk yard and it still looked like crap. It had a slant 6 engine with 3 on the column and would crank on the first try every time. Used to park it right between a 69 SS 396 Chevelle and a 69 Camaro. We got $2.00/week for gas money to haul the neighborhood kids to school and with that slant six engine we were making money. We weren't walking and life wasn't bad...
My first three cars were barn finds.
56' four door ford 6 cylinder and 3 on the tree. Bought it for 150 dollars when I was 14 years old. Drove it through high school. My mom got several phone calls about her 14 year old son parking in the teacher's parking lot...eventually the scoldings stuck, and I started parking in the teacher's parking lot when I was 15 and had my learners permit
57 ford two door with 352 police interceptor. Bought it for 400 dollars. Rode it hard and blew the engine in like 8 months. To be fair the engine was high mileage and rode pretty hard when I got it.
68 for mustang 6 cylinder standard shift. Bought it for 400 dollars. Sold it when I joined the military. Fun car, like a go cart for asphalt.
I liked the '56 the best, it was roomy for hauling my friends around, rolled and pleated seat covers, fender skirts, fuzzy dice and just a real classy car.
Since then, it's been mostly trucks for me.
1973 Dodge Charger. Blue with white vinyl top. 318 with an automatic. ....best of times them was.
1953 Ford two door sedan. Flat head V8. Three on the tree. Hasbeen
I got a brand new 1963 Pontiac Tempest on June 18, 1963, the day I turned 16. It had a 326 cu inch V8 and was insanely fast. I had it for all of 2 days when I let a buddy take it out for a spin and he crashed it on a stone wall. Luckily, he paid for the repairs, but my Dad took the keys for two months. Four years later, I bought a brand new 1967 Austin Healy Sprite for $2000 cash.
My Dad's best friend was a mechanic that worked on all the foreign cars in our small town.
It wasn't unusual to see an Isletta or amphibious car in his shop.
From on of his clients I got a 1971 Simca, 2 years old, for 200 hundred bucks and another 2 bills for parts for the motor.
Bad part was it was hard to be incognito as a teen with the only one in town. <grin>
oh yeah, the glove box could hold a 12 pack...lol...
72 Mustang coupe - 351 Cleveland.
A friend had a blue 67 LeMans with a 2bbl 326. Had the shark gills.
Surprisingly fast……but he always insisted on shifting first to third, when racing.
Never knew why….he just said second was too close to first.
He bought it cheap, bad throw out bearing. We stupidly just changing that….without a new clutch or pressure plate.
Labor didn’t count in the equation, back then.

You guys are old.....My first was a 99' Mustang gt. 4.6 v8 with a 5 speed. Pretty fun car. Been all pickups since then.
1968 Cougar XR-7 with a 302. It was gold with a white top but painted it metallic brown. I payed $500 for it in 1980.
My first vehicle was part ownership in a 37 Chevy pickup. Three of us 17 year olds ran the crap out of it and drank a bunch of beer in it until college or the draft hit home!
My first car of my own, was a 58 Chev, Belaire with a 348 V8. It was fast, but took awhile to get up to speed!
1979 Ford Fairmont with 200 ci straight six.
It got me places.
53 Chevy six cylinder standard transmission in green and creme color.
'70 GTO , gosh I miss that car .
