A girlfriend had an Orange Vega in college, for her first car.....with a squealing throw-out bearing. She sold that and then drove a Ford Granada. I got roped into changing the water pump in that Granada, when I came up for a visit......middle of the winter.....Twin Cities. She proposed a couple years later.....about 37 years ago. Now, wrenching flat sucks. Why is no one copping to their first car being a Vega or Chrysler K car?
No one had an English Ford Cortina either?
Have seen a Peugot listed, and a Studebaker, but no Nash Ramblers, Desotos, Edsels, and other "oddities"? Was just talking to a friend the other day. It sure would be nice to get a lift installed in the shop to check things underneath! And I think I recall that orange color. Wasn't very appealing to my sensibilities. But it seems to have captured you a good one. Congrats.

Was just wallerin' under our Ford Five Hundred yesterday.....removing the left rear broken tie rod. Guess it's called the lateral link, in the biz. Sheared off close to wheel. The car #5 son had for college up at Northern State, Aberdeen. Nothing he did. 
Was just talking to a friend the other day. It sure would be nice to get a lift installed in the shop to check things underneath!

When I graduated high school in '75, my parents gave me their '69 Mercury Montego that I had been driving. After my first year of college, I sold the Merc and bought a '70 Mach 1 from a schoolmate who was selling it to but a Shelby GT 350. I sure wish I still had the Mach 1.

Why is no one copping to their first car being a Vega or Chrysler K car? No one had an English Ford Cortina either? Have seen a Peugot listed, and a Studebaker, but no Nash Ramblers, Desotos, Edsels, and other "oddities"? Well. the Vega and the K Car had not even been thought of when I began driving, and I only noted the "first". I had very little $$ and those that followed, in rapid succession, 48 Olds, 49 Studebaker, 48 Studebaker (kept that for 3 years), 50 Plymouth, 51 Dodge, 49 Chrysler Coupe, then the 54 Chev Station Wagon we drove to AZ from PA and all over the US for 7 years. But, owned those first seven in a span of 6 years. Good times.

351 Cleveland 4 bbl? Details, Man. Spoilers? Louvers? 70 Mach 1 was my second vehicle. Favorite body style to date. 1970 Pontiac Tempest In A Teapot coupe, a Utah salt-rot car. Six banger, 3 on the tree, unlimited slip differential, manual everything. 22 seconds 0-55. Paid a grand in lawnmower money for it, kept it until after college graduation. It would not go, but it turned and stopped great, especially in winter. Amazing road feel, easy to drift, slide on both pavement, gravel and ice, but just a pussycat with a hair of oversteer. When road conditions were truly terrible, it was a great drive.
When I sold it, the throwout died as the buyer tried to drive it away. So, he got his $300 back and I had to get the paperwork changed back before I could limp it to the salvage yard.

1972 Datsun pickup faded canary yellow. Seems like I pushed it more than drove it. My most excellent grad school professor was raised up on the Milk River in N. Montana and drove a 70 Datsun everywhere - called it his "Montana Cadillac". I worked on it quite a bit. That fellow died in it - returning from a trip, driving home from airport, drunk ran a red light and killed him and son. Haven't worked on a Datsun since.

First was a 66 charger.
Apparently came with a 383 but was dealer replaced a year later with a 440 when the original let go (it was a dodge after all. Lol). Thing was flat are up with rust. It was a cool car though. I thought the rear buckets were uber. Sold it after a year.
Kinda wish I had kept it.
Second car was a 67 Camaro. Originally a small block/auto car, it had a 396 with an m22.
Pop sold it because I was a complete dumbazz and didn't deserve it. Owed him money I borrowed to buy it.
Really wish I hadn't been such a putz with that one.

76 F100 4x4 shortbed. Six inch lift kit, 38 inch gumbo mudders, warn winch. Had a 390 engine, four barrel, headers, duals and four on the floor.
Took it out and buried it the first day I had it. Like to have never got it out.

My first car was a '57 VW Beetle, last year with the oval rear window. 36 HP and I drove it all week back and forth to college on $2.00 worth of gas, Sunoco 190 a grade below regular gas.

Wife still had her first car when we met and later married: Pontiac Astre[orange of course]. My first was my recently deceased grandfathers 70' 4 dr Malibu My second[which happened before turning 17] was my fathers 70' Pontiac LeMans Sport conv. Should have never let that one get away.

A 1960 CW square back, that hardly ever got out of the mechanic shop. After that I got a new AMC Gremlin that had nearly as many problems.

You sound like me and my mom. I had the 1971 VW van, probably the worst vehicle ever made. Every 7K miles the engine would blow. Other than that a great car.
My mom bought a new Gremlin, Good Lord what a piece of crap.
