I'm embracing my old, fudd self, and ordered a rancher model in blaze orange to wear rifle/muzzleloader hunting.
No, it doesn't come with eyebrows.
Thanks for supporting the local economy
I saw online where the rancher now comes in orange. It's on my list. I have an original in olive, and find the short earflaps to be pretty useless.
I have two! One is orange.
I like them
I like my my mine. I don’t wear it hunting but I wear it in place of baseball type hat in winter.
I have 7-8 of them. I also have an Orange rancher too!

Yeah, the regular ones are not for really cold weather. If I like this, I'm going done kind of plaid for normal winter wear.
It should be really nice on days where the sun gets into your eyes if you're just wearing a stocking-type hat
Not familiar with them, so I checked it out. Sweet!
They don’t do anything a regular ball cap with a skully pulled over the top won’t do.
But they are cool.
Didn’t Ed Gein use to rock one?
I think I have 6 of them. Great hats.
Hey [bleep]. Didn’t you post a pic of yourself wearing one?
Didn’t Ed Gein use to rock one?
Which brings up another question. Why so many serial killers from Wisconsin?
I have three and my only complaint is that the blaze wool one has faded quite a bit. I’ll probably replace it with a gray or red one. Our Blaze Orange requirements specify 400 square inches, but none of that has to be a hat.
My wife laughs at my green canvas one because in China, a green hat is the symbol of a cuckold, presumably because soldiers wear green hats and their wives have a lot of opportunity to fool around while hubby is off fighting wars.

I'm gonna shoot a deer with a model 81 and you can't see the NEED for one of these fudd caps?!?!???
Hey [bleep]. Didn’t you post a pic of yourself wearing one?
Nope.
I find the Stormy Kromer to be a little on the dainty side.
I only wear a Crown Cap Railroad.
Stormy Kromer is the Ben and Jerry's of men's Headwear.

Laffin....Get em, Elmer !
😂🦫
Picked up a Crown Cap Railroad when I was out in Montana, that is what all the guides with the outfit I hunted with wore.
Fudd no fudd???
(The scope may qualify for fudd status)
I wear a Kromer, given their Yoop roots and my family's work on RRs - seems natural.
Great, classic hats in plaid.

I will totally be staging a photo where I am in the Elmer Fudd wabbit hunting position crouched with the rifle off my hip
Pappy348 they have a lifetime guarantee on the hat! If it's faded send it back they should send you a new one!
Didn’t Ed Gein use to rock one?
I still remember when his neighbors burned Ed's house down! Guess they didn't want it to be a tourist attraction! This reference is probably lost on many here on the Fire...
I have a black Stormy Kromer i wear in the winter. The wife also got me one of their shirts...Made in the USA!
I like the Crown Caps better after having a few of the Kromers.
I have one but I also have a very similar one made by Beaver of Oregon. It fits me better and is equally warm. I was going to get another one but they don't appear to exist any more.
As far as supporting the local economy, there isn't a store here anywhere that carries either Kromer or Beaver hats.

Why?
I'm embracing my old, fudd self, and ordered a rancher model in blaze orange to wear rifle/muzzleloader hunting.

Just order a pair of these to go with........
Another option is the Filson wool hat with earflaps.
I have both the Filson and the Stormy Kromer - equally warm Fudd hats...

Uhh...they aren't gay.
We have already covered this.

They look exactly the same. People thought you were wearing a Stormy Kromer in a pic. I'm wondering if there's a NON COSMETIC difference

The Crown Caps(Dry Ice) are thicker and warmer. Also seem to stay on my head better.

Heavy is good. Heavy means reliable.
And if it doesn't work you can always hit him with it.

Mine says DE .50 and yours says replica
Shut up and sit down you big bald fugck!
I have 4 or 5 of them. They’re awesome. One is Gore-Tex and it’s actually too warm for most days.
yep
have one Kromer gray hat...nice & warm
but I always got more comments on my brown Elmer Fudd hat.........
They don’t do anything a regular ball cap with a skully pulled over the top won’t do.

Exactly
I bought mine like new on a garage sale, ten bucks.
i have several of their original style, including the orange with goretex. good hats for roaming in the thick stuff. not much in the way of rain protection down your neck though. but anything with a big brim catches branches where i hunt.

Nuthin' better than rabbit fur wrapped around yer ears...
unless yu wants ta look like a psucki witk mink wrapped around them and a oink (I mean pink) cap wid a chyna star..
Do they make them with mesh? It’s hot here…
Pappy348 they have a lifetime guarantee on the hat! If it's faded send it back they should send you a new one!
This is correct. They told me they’d replace my faded one. I would prefer it re-dyed but that’s not an option. Hate to lose my “character” so I’ll keep the faded one.

Don't they call those things beanies?
That right there is a good reason to buy one.
Never heard of it
Orange Stihl cap is as prostaff as I get
Yup. A regular hat and a knit hat over that is more practical and won’t give you HIV.
Never understood why a feller would wear two hats when one would do.
Never understood why a feller would wear two hats when one would do.
Because when I’m hot I can pull off the knit hat and still have shade from the regular hat.

Everyone should have two of them .
I had one of the rancher style Stormy Kromers and decided that the short bill didn't work well for me.

As a nurse I count you amongst em.
Didn’t Ed Gein use to rock one?
Yes, I think Ed did wear one IIRC. He was a popular guy in his day. Today's taxidermists could take lessons from Ed......lamp shades from human skin.......before tattoos were so prevalent.
I wore some of the originals about six decades back......they fit me way better as the crown was higher so you could pull it down over the ears.
There was no lining IIRC......or very little......no earflaps other than the laced outside band but because the crown was higher, the entire hat could be pulled lower.
It's a wide variety of knowledge.
At first glance I thought this about adult films😂

I've got 2 of them, grey and plaid.
JD338
Ed wore one. As did a ton of WI and MI men of his era.
He used to do odd jobs for my great grandfather from time to time back then.
Mine are Lake of the Isles brand, but sk style. With the ear flaps down, nice and warm. Made in USA, and sold at our local Ranch and Farm Ace store.

'flave fanboys?
Dug my gray original out of the winter hat/ hankerchief, penny rolls, misc storage drawer this morning. 34F when I left the house, figured I could do with a wool hat today.
Have a waxed canvas model too, but I shrunk the dang thing a little and now the crown won't let it sit quite right on my noggin.
Going to look into that Lake of the Isles brand seeing as how they are 'murican. Ain't at the point in life to buy Canuck if there's still a Proudly Made in the US of A alternative. No doubt, part of my money would end up going to Ottawa. I don't need to be helping their financial situation, ours is more needy.
Yes...I can see you buying an American made hot pink leotard over a brown canvas pair of Canadian bibs.
Yes...I can see you buying an American made hot pink leotard over a brown canvas pair of Canadian bibs.
Are we allowed to use the word "leotard" any more?
It has the "tard" ending on it ya; know. Might get frowned upon.
I think the Carhartt bibs I have were made in Nicaragua or some such, don't know nuttin' bout no Canadian bibs. Haven't seen them in while, has to get to that bone chillin' cold to break them out. Otherwise, the leotard over a pair of Wrangler Riggs cargo pants will suffice.

Yup. A regular hat and a knit hat over that is more practical and won’t give you HIV.
Not everyone is lucky enough to live where you get frost warnings up through early July, plus It’s a Carhartt visor. Wear a hat all the time you’ll go bald, and maybe lose your eyebrows like goalie.
You in yoga pants is not a mental image I need.
Just got a brand new pair of plain old brown canvas Roundhouse overalls for the upcoming hunting season! They seem pretty heavy duty. Ordered em online from the factory in Oklahoma. Love my shoulder britches!

This time of year it can be in the 20's at night and in the 70's during the day. A warm hat for early morning gets very uncomfortable by noon. The stocking cap over a ball cap works great.
I wear my stormy Kromer’s all the time, my favorite is the one that can be converted to orange by pulling the top across to the back

First one I bought it cost $8 still have it last one was a orange $12 it was hard to get the money out of my pocket to buy it.....wife picked up a grey at the second hand store like new $2.....
Have a red one was my Dads my guess from the early 50's before the Mackinaw Bridge was built and he hunter there then.....
They have been keeping my head warm hunting since the mid-60's......

goalie;
Top of the morning to you sir, I hope that the day back east is looking to be a decent one.
Thanks for the thread and the early morning laughs it's provided!
Since in part of your former life you likely traveled north of the medicine line, you can likely relate to this story, but if need be one of us will have to translate.
Back in the early '80's we used to get a custom combine crew up from the bottom of South Dakota to do our combining. They'd start the year down in Ogallala, Nebraska work north as far as us and the head south again - something like that.
Anyways one Saskatchewan night it's blowing a gale and close to freezing and I'm talking to Mark the head guy and a couple other combine operators as they've loaded the semi I'm driving with the last load of grain for the night.
We're all in ball caps - usually it was either a tractor, seed or chemical company that gave out caps back then, but they were often mesh back only and as such quite cold and didn't slow down the wind at all.
I mentioned to Mark that we had a box of toques in the shop and I'd bring them all one if they wanted, which of course was met with blank stares from all 3 of the US crew.....
I then asked, "Do you know what I'm talking about, when I say toque?"
Mark replied, "No, not really, but like as not tonight Dwayne, I'd try and eat it as I'm awful hungry right now!"
We then had a discussion about what toques were called stateside and I learned about "watch caps" and "knitted caps" that night, so an international exchange of education was achieved by all I suppose.
Speaking personally, I've had a grey Kromer for decades now, I want to say before our now adult girls were born, so if ownership of it didn't change my gender preference substantially as far as anyone who knows me could tell.
Jim talked about Crown Cap in Winnipeg last winter and I do mean to get one just for the sake of science and keeping Canadians working too.
We don't get bad winters here in our part of BC, so maybe -25° C once in a great while up hunting, but usually not colder than -20° here at the home place and that for short bursts, so it's likely overkill.
My lineage is mostly Teutonic as far as we can tell, so most head gear stay stuck to the corners, even without hair to keep it there in my case.
Anyways sir, I just wanted to say thanks for the chuckles and hope your hunts are all grand this fall.
Dwayne

Kromer/Crown: I've never seen the appeal (see first signature line). I prefer a Jones Cap.
I don't happen to own either kind, but the appeal would seem to be a comfortable, warm, practical hat you can wear with or without ear protection. If looks are more important to a man than practicality, he should hunt in a tweed suit and tie, maybe.
Just imagine how smart you'd all be if you hadn't been cooking your brains in those hats for the last 4 decades!
LOL
I have a Stormy Kromer (red and black plaid) which I picked up while travelling through the Great Lakes region about fifteen years ago. I like the hat but would like better ear protection. Back when I had hair, I could do without a hat but I shed too much heat today! GD
That's why the politicians sent you guys all the Samoli's, they knew yer brain was cooked and you probbly wouldn't even notice.

The rancher model = more better eat protection
Fudd hats don't shed rain well. Nothing to keep the rain off your neck. Probably work well in minni soda, not so much in web foot country.
Pop had two knit caps, one dark, one orange, from start of wood cutting season till green up he had one of them on outside...or in basement where we put in the wood stove and cut the shroud into the cold air return of his central unit.

While it will be epic if I can get a deer with the 81 this year while wearing a literal fudd hat, I'm going to start using the Elkslayer method of just sending pictures to a few "trusted" 24HC members.
So, iffn you wanna be on the list, you may want to think about refraining from the eyebrow jokes......
🤣
(I'm obviously kidding, as I could wear the hat with the pink bow and still not be a big enough puzzy to pull the "trusted members have seen my pics" card.)
I've been told I'm trustworthy.
I'm just not sure I'm "THAT" trustworthy.
Better not send pics to me, just post 'em up as I would.

Kromers are overrated.
Ear flaps are too short and thin.
Dry Ice Crown caps are far better for when you really need protection from the cold.

Nope. It doesn’t cut it either.
I’d venture to say I work outside in more serious weather conditions than most by a long shot. I’ve owned more various makes and models of scotch-caps. Kromers suck unless you just want the look and don’t really need the protection.

Yeah, I get that it isn't North slope approved, but it rarely is below 0 degrees Fahrenheit when I'm rifle hunting.
This is for hunting with the Remington 81 😉
I don't know if I have ever seen a Stormy Kromer hat on a true outdoorsman----meaning ranchers and farmers. The last I checked, by the end of the month they will all be wearing Scotch caps with real ear flaps.
I personally wouldn't wear either, since I am not a rancher or farmer. My ears don't get cold----ever!
...unless you just want the look and don’t really need the protection.
That observation is applicable to a great many things - particularly (even though it would be vehemently denied) here at the 'fire.

I don't know about anyone else around here, but I'm not signing up to wear no "Scotch cap" with a ball on the tip top. That's about as weird as the Canuck toques with the little ball on top.
Kaywoodie, knower of all things, well maybe most things, historical, what's the story on the little ball of yarn bristles on top of these things? Seems like a waste of good yard to me, and they look funny too.

I remember reading some bullshidt years ago about how “real” ranchers don’t wear felt cowboy hats. That only “dudes” and pretenders did. “Real” ranchers wear ball caps and ride 4wheelers. I still laugh at that
I've been told I'm trustworthy.
I'm just not sure I'm "THAT" trustworthy.
Better not send pics to me, just post 'em up as I would.
And I hope that '81 hunt turns out to be a success.
I knew it. That's all you need. One thieving WOP on the team!
Someone has to carry the shiv and have knowledge of the "cementa shoes"
Oh come on.....that was a soft ball.
Stone? STONE? What's your real name? Before you changed it?!
Watch it there oosik boy.
I just learned on this thread, only farmers and ranchers are true outdoorsman. Betting some loggers might not agree. Along with steelhead fishermen and the list goes on. Growing up farming was fair weather, logging was for after the freeze!

What "right" would they have to wear ball caps when they aren't ball players?
Cromer rancher hats are ok for temperate weather ; have 2 work ok , use it mostly bird and drinking ipas inside at the local micro brewery
Now Cold weather and active and moving I’ll wear this
https://www.kuiu.com/products/kenai-bomber-hat-gunmetal?variant=40340428521630
I'll wear what ever headgear I jolly well please, and remove it indoors.
Do you wear that to the BHA fundraisers?
Do you wear that to the BHA fundraisers?
I tried a similar style hat once. The agency I worked for once had a nice fur trooper hat available on the uniform site. When I started they no longer had it listed, you know the old "fur is cruel for critters" but synthetics made from oil are fine.
Dang thing choked me when I tried to use that chin strap made from the ear flaps.
Maybe the KUIU folks ironed out that problem? Maybe it was just a prominent Adam's apple deal,
I think I'll stick with a Kromer and scarf if needed, or one of a bunch of wool watchcaps I have.

'Seems you been about everywhere and dealt with anything Zoro, Please tell us with which we should side..

BillyGoatGruff;
Good evening to you sir, I hope the day was a good one for you and yours and you're all doing well.
Since I'm done supper, have covered the tomatoes and peppers for the predicted frost tonight and have a wee bit of Pike Creek both in me and still left in a glass, I'll tell this one quickly.
My long time hunting partner is one of the rare folks who was both born and raised here in the south Okanagan and as such knows a few of the local ranching families, though perhaps not to the same degree as I do since I was on a branding crew for 27 odd years until the herd got sold.
Anyways, we still had horses and I had offered to take him on his first "horse hunt", so he accepted.
He liked to bug me about my cowboy hat on the best of days, saying something like you quoted to the effect that "real ranchers and cowboys wear ball caps".
We saddled up under the barn lights and headed onto the dark mountain, working our way up to where I thought some local mulies ought to be by that time of year.
From the darkness I heard, "Hold up a bit, cap came off" as he stopped to retrieve his ball cap that either a Ponderosa Pine or Saskatoon branch had knocked off.
About the 3rd time he did that, I reined in Carly the Appy, turned her around and trotted the couple yards back down the trail in the early dawn. Somehow Billy, I couldn't resist and the devil got the best of me as I leaned over and quietly said, "You know all the real cowboys wear ball caps...."
His reply was short and sweet and was more or less Good For You Dwayne....
He shot a nice fat 2 point that morning in about a half hour and here I am packing the parts onto Carly the Appy for the walk back down the mountain.
The observant reader will note the Christmas sweater I'm sporting, but also there's no Kromer in the photo so I guess once again I'm off topic.
All the best to you all this season BillyGoat, here's to grand hunts regardless of headgear.
Dwayne
Dwayne as always you shame me with your prose.
I was stirring the pot more than anything. I’ve worn and seen worn plenty of felt hats that weren’t posers lol. Every thing has its place.
I think it's cool that we have so many experts on homosexuality here on the 24HC......
🤣
Yeah, well I'll put being the only straight guy under 50 in a class of nurses in the early 90's down on the list of really not gay things to experience.
😉
Those are the kind of odds that a guy is looking for 😉

To say "it didn't suck" would be the understatement of the year.

Dude, bragging about banging the othe male nursing students is a bit weird.
[quote=goalie][quote=Tarkio]Kromers are overrated. .
Yeah, I get that it isn't North slope approved, but it rarely is below 0 degrees Fahrenheit when I'm rifle hunting.
This is for hunting with the Remington 81 😉
For hunting with that classic you really should have one of the old Filson models with the ear flaps that tied up over the top.
Kick myself mentally for not having bought one when we lived north of 60. As has been mentioned above probably the content of my cranium wasn’t that valuable anyway 🤔
The Lake of The Isles hats, kromer style, are very warm. Heavy wool, and the ear flaps hold your ears tight to your head. Only thing warmer I've worn is a mountie style hat.

Me, well, let's just say being the only guy at late night study groups didn't suck. 😉

So you’re bragging about banging chicks just out of high school in an environment bereft of many males. ?
Mostly 18-22, but there was one lady who was in her thirties that I should've paid tuition to. She taught me more than a lot of the teachers.....

Dang good work if you can get it, says I...

Mmmmmnnn?
Experience shows, eh?
I learn something new every day on here......Being from the South, I never had heard what the name of those caps were. I wear what they call a "jones" style hunting cap, but the Stormy Kromer cap never entered my world.
Fudd no fudd???
(The scope may qualify for fudd status)
Awesome pics K wood!

How so?
It looks like they have some models that would be great for the cold, the trapper model.
If it’s really cold you need a Mad Bomber.
If it’s really cold you need a Mad Bomber.
I've got a rabbit fur one in orange, but it's late season muzzle loader only.
What about an orange Fedora?
I haven't bought clothes in years.
Have yet to wear this thing...
I had a red one one time, but couldn't make myself wear it...I felt I looked too much like "Ed Geins", lol Jokes aside, yes it was warm and very comfortable.
I've a green one that gets worn over a thin balaclava. The hat is mostly there to shade my eyes.
I have a filson double mackinaw hat and it is perfect for those cold days where i want the visor of a hat, warmth of fur and the ability to shift into uninhibited hearing mode.
Leinkugel's has 6 Stormy Kromer hats on sale for $31.47.
